    Rubem Fonseca and Noir Literature

    No full text
Rubem Fonseca is considered a key author in the introduction of crime fiction in Brazil. This article reviews his contribution to the genre and analyzes the specifics of his narrative in the context of Brazilian literature, in which Fonseca breaks from and exceeds the traditional dichotomies between high and popular literature. Fonseca becomes part of the distinct tradition of crime fiction, which he reinterprets differently in his short stories by giving voice to the marginalized, and in his novels by incorporating elements of hardboiled, noir fiction, and even whodunit. The character of Mandrake is situated in a context that increasingly includes paraliterary concerns

The fictional work of the author Rubem Fonseca, since its debut in 1963, with the book of tales entitled Os Prisioneiros, it has been evoking a continuing interest in their readers and in the specialized criticism. The doctoral thesis entitled Por dentro da cidade solidão e marginalidade em Rubem Fonseca turns itself to his tale, it is considered by many as the most pungent of the author s literature. It is chosen a corpus of varied tales of the author, and still having as foundation the ideas from scholars of literary narratives, among them Antonio Candido (1980; 1987; 2006), Alfredo Bosi (1999; 2006) and still Walter Benjamin, (2000a; 2000b), the thesis discusses the contemporary Brazilian literature, more specifically the fonsequiana fiction, which exposes in an intense way the modern human condition in big cities: our dramas, inconstancies, desires and loneliness.

ABSTRACT: This article aims to emphasize the relations between History and Biografy through Rubem Fonseca\u27s novel Bufo & Spallanzani. The book will be took as a kind of "himself writing" investigating the idea of "invisible omnipresence" to explain the control that writer keeps about his work. In this process, is interesting to think what Verena Albert called "sliding between author and character", which, involved in the activity of "to be another" through his characters, the author put himself in a "shadow\u27s zone", area composed by the "refraction\u27s angle" between author and character, according to Costa Lima. The hypothesis is that the literary persona of Rubem Fonseca\u27s writer was woven based on the process of create a fiction of himself, keeping silence about certain aspects of his public life (as the participation in Ipes), while another are glorify (as the censorship). keywords Rubem Fonseca; literature and history; history and biography

Luís Adão da Fonseca: an academic master

As an homage and as a memory exercise, the author seeks to trace the academic path of Luís Adão da Fonseca since he returned to Portugal in 1981, after a prolonged stay in Spain since 1973. As his close collaborator, both as an assistant and also associated with various projects that he carried out, especially around the alignment between Portuguese and Spanish medievalists (who for decades almost always ignored each other), it is worth mentioning the process of creating of the Portuguese Society of Medieval Studies, of which the author was a close witness. In this same sense, it is important to mention the impulse given to the organization of the Luso- Spanish Journeys of Medieval History or to the creation of Chairs on Medieval History of Portugal and Spain in several universities in both countries. Luís Adão da Fonseca supported my contact with Spanish universities and historiography, to which I remain very close, while at the same time encouraged the beginning of career as a professor and offered me the example of an ethical posture as a teacher and as a researcher. He was essential in my formation as an academic in its various aspects, reasons that make him, along with José Mattoso, one of my Mentors

Vegetation Dynamics - Ecosystem Management, Conservation, and Protection

    No full text
This book entitled Vegetation Dynamics – Ecosystem Management, Conservation, and Protection has eight chapters, four related to vegetation dynamics and four related to monitoring and management. In the introductory chapter, Ana Cristina Gonçalves and Teresa Fidalgo Fonseca discussed the importance of species traits and sites in the sustainability of the forest systems as well as the importance of monitoring, modelling and management. Mariana Niculescu discussed the effects of the changes in management practices, invasive species, climate change and mining on meadows and forest systems in Romania. The author pinpointed the effects of unsuitable management on the sustainability of the agroforestry systems. Overall, maintaining agroforestry sustainability, with suitable management practices, would enable regenerating vegetation. Arvid Odland evaluated the effect of water reduction on forest floodplain wetlands. The species proportion and cover were influenced by its capacity for flowering and fruiting, which were also related to the temperature and water level. This review highlighted the importance of long-term studies as vegetation dynamics evolve slowly over time. Mallem Hamida evaluated the effect of vegetation on soil rehabilitation in pre-desert conditions, particularly in wind erosion mitigation and soil properties improvement in Algeria. Vegetation enhanced dune stabilisation due to its impact on wind erosion, and vegetation improved soil properties. However, variations were found when different species were compared. António L. Crespí et al. explored the concept of vegetation robustness and proposed a methodological approach to characterise the functional traits of vegetation and their potential correlation with environmental factors. The study indicated that the resilience of these areas was influenced by their resistance and was linked to environmental variability, particularly geomorphological and climatic factors. Damien Hicks reviewed the influence of sampling vegetation and a set of quantitative tools to analyse data. It included the optimisation protocols to enable the use of data for different analyses, from multivariate analysis to complex statistical analysis of data with network structure, machine learning methods and Bayesian methods. Fonseca et al. conducted a comprehensive review of the traits, silviculture and management of Pseudotsuga menziesii in Portugal. The authors analysed the area potentially suitable for establishing stands of this species in Portugal, as well as its potential growth and wood properties. Iglesias et al. discussed the effects of pure, even-aged plantations of Eucalyptus globulus and invasive species on biodiversity and using an invasive species (Phytolacca americana) to produce pulp and paper. The physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of Phytolacca americana confirmed that the species is suitable for producing paper in a pulp blend of the two species
