    Validation of DSS-R (Study 1)

    No full text
We developed a scenario measure to assess people’s evaluation and awareness of racism and sexism on a broad spectrum of everyday life experiences. The aim of this study is to test the racist version of the scenarios to develop and validate the novel Racism Scenario Scale to measure awareness of racial discrimination

Can Media Framing Help Governments Avoid Blame for Welfare Retrenchment? Evidence from a Conjoint Experiment in Russia

    No full text
Every policy produces winners and losers. Deep structural reforms and welfare retrenchment often impose costs upon various groups of the national population. As the studies of the US and European states show, one of the most crucial negative political consequences of such reforms is the decrease in mass support for the government responsible for the initiation of the reform. However, sometimes governments manage to avoid popular outrage for welfare retrenchment. Several viable strategies of political blame avoidance have been identified in the previous literature, including (a) shifting the blame to subordinate or competing political actors; (b) providing compensations to most vulnerable groups affected by the reform; and (c) framing the public perception of reform via various media channels. In this project we focus on the latter strategy and test whether intentional media framing of a potentially unpopular welfare reform may help a non-democratic government to escape political losses associated with the reform. Drawing on the existing literature on political support, we identify a variety of media frames that may potentially affect mass attitudes toward government in the context of a major welfare retrenchment reform. We estimate the effects of those frames by using a conjoint vignette experiment about a hypothetical healthcare reform in Russia

Scoping review of the current state of low back pain research in Pakistan

    No full text
It is important to know what evidence is available for LBP management in Pakistani population to avoid duplication of research endeavours. The scarcity of resources for conducting research in Pakistani population dictates that impactful research questions are pursued. Therefore, this review aims to summarize the scope, and map the current state of back pain research in Pakistan. It will identify gaps in the literature to provide recommendations for future research

Cognitive, social, and emotional markers of non-physical aggression in emerging adults: a systematic review.

    No full text
Non-physical aggression are behaviours designed to harm an individual through social, relation or verbal means. Non-physical aggression first emerges in early childhood but persists well into adulthood and beyond. Furthermore, despite primarily focusing on non-physical aggression during early development, research shows the serious harms associated with non-physical aggression are not limited to childhood and adolescence. Therefore, a better understanding of the individual and social correlates of this type of aggression post adolescence is needed to assist harm reduction and prevention efforts. To our knowledge, a synthesis of the psychosocial predictors of non-physical aggression beyond early childhood has not been undertaken. The aim of this review is to fill this void in the non-physical aggression literature

    Cognitive adaptations for collaboration (E1)

    No full text
Note this study was originally titled: "Collaboration - Do cues of a shared goal and coordination affect motivations to share? (Study 1)" The purpose of this study is to improve our understanding of how the mind identifies collaborative scenarios and how sharing decisions are made when collaboration has occurred. Specifically, this study will test whether the cues of shared fate and coordination affect sharing decisions in a collaborative fishing task. Past research has shown that sharing decisions depend on collaboration, perceptions of shared fate can elicit reciprocity, and that the common knowledge that makes coordination possible is essential in reducing uncertainty and increasing shared contributions. This research will expand on current empirical work on collaboration, shared fate, coordination, common knowledge, and fairness. Results will address whether cooperation is regulated by several different, functionally distinct computational systems, or just one (as is commonly assumed) by delineating the unique cues that are used as input by the mind for collaborative decision making. This research would be the first of its kind to effectively separate the factors of shared fate/goal and coordination, as in previous work these factors are almost always confounded, or the appropriate outcome variables have not been measure

How Policy Narratives from Foreign Countries Shape Domestic Perceptions

    No full text
My central objective is to uncover if ‘narrative transference’ occurs and, if so, how it influences individual views towards issue importance and public resource allocation. I would also like to explore potential moderators, most importantly; a potentially negative relationship between “cultural distance” and narrative transference. My current working definition of narrative transference is defined as the process by which a person or group ‘imports’ a narrative from another place or context into their current, different place or context. For example, a person living in Austria may become increasingly concerned about obesity in their country after reading a news article about the growing problem of obesity in Germany whether or not obesity rates are changing in Austria. I have identified a gap in the literature regarding the concept of ‘narrative transference’ which may take place between any social groups or individuals. I will specifically be looking at country level ‘social-groups'. It does not appear that the concept is well-studied in the literature. I will conduct a survey with Canadian participants using a between-subjects research design testing the influence of narratives from other countries on participants' perceptions of that issue in C

Exploring How the Hairstyle Choices Impact Impressions of Black Women in Tech Among Black Female Participants.

    No full text
The primary goal of this experiment is to examine whether different hairstyle choices impact Black female participants impression of Black women working in tech. For the current study, we will use 4 sets of well-matched pictures, featuring a Black women with either curly hair, braids, or straight hair (i.e., 12 total pictures). The Black women will all be described as working in the technology sector. Black female participants will rate all 12 pictures and thus, this study will have a 4 (picture set) by 3 (hairstyle) within-subjects design. We are interested whether prototypicality of hairstyles (i.e., braids, straight hair, curly hair) affect Black female participants’ perceptions of the Black women
