Sonia Netto Salomão’s study examines the mechanism by which models - that belong to very specific cultural traditions - are transplanted and acculturated in post-colonial 19th-century Brazil. It focuses on Machado de Assis, an author who exemplified confrontation with the western canon, both ancient and modern, to illustrate how translations do not simply “transport” meaning. Salomão thus shows how a Shakespearean simile becomes a metaphor in Dom Casmurro, through a French eighteenth version. As she says, translations belong to diverse traditions and create other traditions, based on the reception of a given author’s poetics. She takes as a historical-cultural and theoretical backdrop a specific process within Brazilian culture, defined in the context of avant-garde Brazilian modernism as “Cannibalism”, and traces it back to the second half of the 19th century, demonstrating its power as a cultural paradigm

The Thiol-specific Antioxidant Enzyme Prevents Mitochondrial Permeability Transition: Evidence For The Participation Of Reactive Oxygen Species In This Mechanism

    No full text
Mitochondrial swelling and membrane protein thiol oxidation associated with mitochondrial permeability transition induced by Ca2+ and inorganic phosphate are inhibited in a dose-dependent manner either by catalase, the thiol-specific antioxidant enzyme (TSA), a protein recently demonstrated to present thiol peroxidase activity, or ebselen, a selenium-containing heterocycle which also possesses thiol peroxidase activity. This inhibition of mitochondrial permeability transition is due to the removal of mitochondrial-generated H2O2 which can easily diffuse to the extramitochondrial space. Whereas ebselen required the presence of reduced glutathione as a reductant to grant its protective effect, TSA was fully reduced by mitochondrial components. Decrease in the oxygen concentration of the reaction medium also inhibits mitochondrial permeabilization and membrane protein thiol oxidation, in a concentration-dependent manner. The results presented in this report confirm that mitochondrial permeability transition induced by Ca2+ and inorganic phosphate is reactive oxygen species- dependent. The possible importance of TSA as an intracellular antioxidant, avoiding the onset of mitochondrial permeability transition, is discussed in the text.273211276612769Gunter, T.E., Gunter, K.K., Sheu, S.-S., Gavin, C.E., (1994) Am. A presença do mar em Dom Casmurro: filigranas machadianas

    No full text
The presence of the sea in Dom Casmurro This article is a critical study of water symbolism and the presence of the sea in a novel of Machado de Assis mature phase. Time, memory, and change flow in the confrontation between the jealous Bento Santiago, a man of the land with eroding power, and the personal merit of women with the astute intelligence of Capitu or the pragmatism of an emerging merchant class to which Escobar belongs. The latter drowns in a stormy sea that finally engulfs Bento’s marriage to Capitolina. Machado’s filigrees form a narrative palimpsest, with traces of readings that must be pieced together to fully construct the meaning that also nature provides, beginning with the psychological and social incorporation of the characters. Capitu’s “undertow eyes”, an obsessive image of the waves and the sea in Dom Casmurro, are the product of work patiently developed over many years in other texts by the Rio de Janeiro author

A recurring character in the books from the writer Tabajara Ruas, Antônio de Souza Netto has, historically, a main role in many wars that moved the politics of the recently formed nations from the south of the American continent during the 19th century. In Os varões assinalados, Netto perde sua alma and As cartas do domador (or Netto e o domador de cavalos), the author shows a character coated of reality and fiction, where it is possible to perceive a trajectory that goes from an introduction based on history to get to a made-up representation of Netto. To situate this approach made by literature, some relevant concepts for the proposed interpretation are shown here in this paper, like regionalism, the notion of frontier and the role of the hero, making the comparison of different positions present in historiography and thus, on the questioning of traditional definitions, showing possibilities that confer a multiple identification of the character in question. This work also deals with the dialogue of other literary compositions from varied authors, pointing out to, through such interdisciplinary and intertextual comparative analysis, other perspectives for the comprehension of facts and characters that make up the gaúcho‟s culture.

The author in his response to Jose Paulo Netto emphasizes the role of psychoanalysis to explain and update the Marxist problematic, which supposes a double meeting of psychoanalysis with Marxism, the Marxism with psychoanalysis. In this meeting Karsz indicates that social work practices teach that ideology and unconscious are not two impenetrable universes, but only two specific dimensions of a single human subject.

ABSTRACT: The present work analyzes the thought of José Paulo Netto, considering the thesis of the syncretic structure of Social Work, defended in the Graduate Program in Social Work at PUC-SP, in 1990, and published in the work entitled "Monopoly capitalism and social service", in 1992. In this sense, our main objective is to apprehend the syncretic structure of Social Work from the formulation of José Paulo Netto. The methodology used was theoretical research, with a qualitative approach, based on in-depth reading. As one of the main results, we found that the theoretical trajectory traced by José Paulo Netto was marked by a dense deepening of the Marxian Critical Social Theory and the Marxist Tradition; and with regard to the syncretic structure of Social Work, formulated by Netto (2011), we observe that the author contributed to the densification of the foundations of Social Work, specifically in Brazil. Its analysis was produced from the perspective of the social direction of "intention of rupture", anchored in the Marxist and Marxian framework. Keywords: Social services; Syncretic structure; Monopoly capitalism

The author discusses Prof. Netto’s presentation regarding three dimensions: the equality concept, the welfare state subject, and the consequences of the former discussion for social work. First, he questions the dichotomy equality/individualism argued by Prof. Netto through the distinction between Marxism and Neo-liberalism he does transversally in his presentation, accusing it as subcomplex, if we want to give a proper image of contemporary world and its intervention problems. Secondly, the author talks about welfare state and the difficulties in achieving expectations posed in it- since a political centre can not answer all the demands coming from a modern society. Finally, Mascareño indicates challenges for social work regarding to its commitment with the discipline, the professional practice and the ethical action.

The author takes the challenge posed by Congress: the unequal contemporary order, and calls for a professional commitment framed by what he describes as a critical social service, which seeks to frontally resist the kingdom of inequality. Professor Netto concerns inequality in Brazil and Latin America and argues that this condition rather than a simple call for an ethical principle or an aspiration or a subjective demand of ideological-political left sectors, for Social Service is a major civil requirement. To explain the situation, the author describes the consequences of neoliberal adjustment in the region and establishes that the challenge for social service does not fall within the scope of techniques or procedures of the intervention, but it falls within the scope of understanding the social meaning of the intervention, which is based on the conditions under which social relations are processed in contemporary society.
