Organizations are going to the Cloud: which competences for the IT Manager?
Cloud Computing (CC) is emerging as a new trend for managing IT resources within organizations. It also raises a broad range of issues from technically-oriented to organization-oriented related to cloud evolution and migration. It invites consideration of new models of governance for systems, service and organization. In order to take advantage from the opportunities offered by this technology, IT governance processes must be updated and aligned with the requirements emerging from CC adoption. As a consequence of this phenomenon, from the perspective of resources and organizational capabilities, CC requires a rethinking of the individual competences of IT managers to fill the gaps related to cloud adoption. In this paper we address the issue of identifying this gap by analyzing the impact of CC on both the activities of IT managers and the competence areas characterizing their professional profile. The results of this study provides guidelines for the development of training programs for IT managers. Integrated management of urban solid waste in the territory of "Comunità Montana delle valli del Taro e del Ceno": organizational-technical and economic aspects.
The management of municipal solid waste and assimilated in a hilly-mountain area, presents problems not always easy to manage, under which, only through careful analysis and correct evaluation techniques, it’s possible to get to an integrated management and a sustainable cost for the end user. This work is therefore the analysis of a very large territory, which was developed on two adjacent valleys (Taro and Ceno) in the province of Parma. In particular we have been studied the technical, organizational, managerial and economic aspects, in order to define an optimal model of management that is necessary to minimize impacts on environment and global costs.The analysis showed that for example, in similar municipalities, there are some significant differences in terms of cost of the waste tax, as well as in the organization of the service. It was therefore tried to analyze, even technically, the service offered, through an analysis of data on waste collected and monitored with satellite technology (GPS). In particular, this innovative technology, has shown a good qualitative and quantitative performance for territorial control of the flow of waste, with the exception of the errors inherent of the system itself
Antiviral effect and mode of action of methanolic extract of<i>Verbascum thapsus</i>L. on pseudorabies virus (strain RC/79)
The methanolic extract of Verbascum thapsus was evaluated for its antiviral activity against the pseudorabies virus strain RC/79 (PrV), and also for its cytotoxic activity on Vero cells. The extract showed CC50 values of 1100gmL1 and 1426gmL1 by NRU and MTT assays, respectively. The 50% inhibitory concentration of the extract for PrV plaque formation was determined at 35gmL1, and selectivity indices were 31.4 (NRU) and 40.7 (MTT). When cells were pre-treated with the extract prior to virus infection, the inhibition in plaque formation was 70%. PrV was highly inhibited when it was incubated with plant extract or when the extract was added during the adsorption phase (99%). However, no inhibitory effect was observed when the extract was added to the cells after the adsorption period. Thus, these results suggest that the methanolic extract of Verbascum thapsus may contain bioactive compound(s) that affect PrV mostly in the adsorption phase.Fil: Escobar, Franco Matias. Oxidative phosphorylation in bone cells
The role of energy metabolism in bone cells is an active field of investigation. Bone cells are metabolically very active and require high levels of energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to support their function. ATP is generated in the cytosol via glycolysis coupled with lactic acid fermentation and in the mitochondria via oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). OXPHOS is the final convergent metabolic pathway for all oxidative steps of dietary nutrients catabolism. The formation of ATP is driven by an electrochemical gradient that forms across the mitochondrial inner membrane through to the activity of the electron transport chain (ETC) complexes and requires the presence of oxygen as the final electron acceptor. The current literature supports a model in which glycolysis is the main source of energy in undifferentiated mesenchymal progenitors and terminally differentiated osteoblasts, whereas OXPHOS appears relevant in an intermediate stage of differentiation of those cells. Conversely, osteoclasts progressively increase OXPHOS during differentiation until they become multinucleated and mitochondrial-rich terminal differentiated cells. Despite the abundance of mitochondria, mature osteoclasts are considered ATP-depleted, and the availability of ATP is a critical factor that regulates the low survival capacity of these cells, which rapidly undergo death by apoptosis. In addition to ATP, bioenergetic metabolism generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) and intermediate metabolites that regulate a variety of cellular functions, including epigenetics changes of genomic DNA and histones. This review will briefly discuss the role of OXPHOS and the cross-talks OXPHOS-glycolysis in the differentiation process of bone cells
Polyphenols as possible bioprotectors against cytotoxicity and DNA damage induced by ochratoxin A
The present study aimed to investigate the protective effects of luteolin (L), chlorogenic acid (ChlA) and caffeic acid (CafA) against cyto-genotoxic effects caused by OTA. Vero cells and rat lymphocytes were used and viability was measured by neutral red uptake, MTT and trypan blue dye exclusion method. L (50 and 100 µg/mL), ChlA (100 and 200 µg/mL) and CafA (10-50µg/mL) reduced the damage induced by OTA (10 µg/mL) on both cells type shown a good protective effect. The comet and micronucleus tests in Balb/c mice were performed. ChlA (10 mg/kg bw) reduced OTA (0.85 mg/kg bw)-induced DNA damage on blood and bone marrow cells, CafA (10 mg/kg bw) showed protective effect only in blood cells and luteolin (2.5 mg/kg bw) failed to protect DNA integrity on cells. In conclusion, polyphenols tested reduced the toxicity caused by OTA on different target cells with good protective effect, being ChlA the compound that showed the best effects.Fil: Cariddi, Laura Noelia.
