Design Aspects and Applications of Deep-V Hull Forms to High Speed Crafts

    No full text
In this paper an assessment of the newest unconventional hull types which are currently under construction or object of research projects in FINCANTIERI, is reviewed, focusing the attention either on the methodology and tools employed in the design phase, either on the peculiar hydrodynamic characteristics of each hull type. The use of the modern computational fluodynamic tools (CFD) in the preliminary stage of the project is useful to reach a satisfying solution which can fulfill the specifications. The validity and effectiveness of these types of computer simulation programmes are discussed on the base of the results achieved in the application on the latest designed ships which were tested in model scale and/or built. Some criteria on the evaluation of the data which such programmes can provide is also included. The powering, seakeeping and manoeuvring performances of Deep-V monohulls over conventional round bilge hulls are analysed and critically discussed within their application to fast ferries. Some interesting full scale results will be presented as well, with the aim to validate the computational design methods

Variabilità del benessere economico nelle province dell’Italia settentrionale

    No full text

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Testing Gibrat's law in Italian macro-regions:analysis on a panel of mechanical companies

    No full text
The present paper deals with the question whether “Gibrat’s law” is applicable to Italian mechanical companies active between 1997 and 1999 or not. The analysis was carried at a spatial level splitting companies in four macro-regions: North- West, North – East, Centre and South. On the basis of a set of descriptive and inferential tools, we find that firm size, measured by total assets, follows approximately a log-normal distribution in at least two of the four analyzed macro-regions. Nevertheless log-normality is only one necessary but not sufficient condition for the validity of the Gibrat’s law. Thus we analyzed the influence of firm size on growth rate finding a negative relation between the two variables in all macro-regions. This is a clear violation of Gibrat’s law. Another violation was found by the application of an econometric model which evidences the persistence of growth

Course Keeping Aspects in the Design of Fast Deep-V Monohull

    No full text
The dynamic course stability of modern, fast, deep-V monohulls is still difficult to evaluate by means of purely theoretical methods and model tests with the specific design are generally necessary for new hull designs. There is not enough experimental data available concerning hydrodynamic derivatives and/or manoeuvring characteristics of these kinds of hulls to make it possible to assess even the elementary linear criteria of dynamic course stability. Moreover there does not yet seem to be any reliable theoretically method to calculate the hydrodynamic forces acting on a hull moving rectilinearly with a drift angle or moving around a circular path. Such theoretical methods should also include the contributions of waterjet inlets and other appendages and their interactions with the hull. As a part of the design activity of Fincantieri in the field of fast monohull ferries, an extensive investigation on optimisation of the course keeping ability of such of hulls has been conducted, by combining theory and experimental analysis (PMM tests). Alternative configurations, including minor hull modifications and various fixed and movable appendage configurations, have been evaluated from the course keeping and resistance points of view, resulting in the definition of the best options, which were applied to new designs and have been verified in full-scale trials. The various solutions will be presented and critically discussed in the paper, which also describes the simple theoretical approaches used to account for the 'fin effect' of waterjet inlets and various fin/hull and fin/waterjet interactions
