A fractional infiltration model for the simulation of the wetting front in non-saturated soils and its application in a soil column

    No full text
Many environmental studies require accurate simulation of water and solute fluxes in the unsaturated zone. The present work is an attempt to ascertain whether fractional calculus is suitable as a tool for the simulation of the wetting front in partially saturated porous media. The model is based on the non linear Richards diffusion equation, where the derivative with respect to time is substituted with a fractional derivative of order smaller than one and the fractional Richards equation is solved by the use of a numerical algorithm (i.e. Adams-Bashforth-Moulton method). The behavior of the saturation front as a function of time, space and fractional order and the influence of soil diffusivity on the volumetric moisture content are analyzed through many numerical simulations in order to create a complete description of many phenomena involved in superficial soil layers (as in any porous media) during extreme rain events. Vertical infiltration experiments on a sandy soils have been conducted as well, for the measurement of soil water content at selected times and positions. Preliminary results show the connection between fractional order and hydrologic parameters

Assessment analysis of seismological risk and geohazard vulnerability of first level in major cultural heritage sites of Albania

This activity was done by the launching of a microzonation assessment of level 1 at the World Heritage properties of Gjirokastra, Berat, Saranda-Butrint and the Apollonia archaeological park. An interdisciplinary Italian/Albanian work team composed of engineers, geologists and archeologists led by CNR (Centro Nazionale Ricerche) - IGAG (Istituto di Geologia Ambientale e Geoingegneria) started a specific geological and geophysical field survey based on micro-zonation in late November 2011. This produced a comprehensive assessment report and related maps of Seismological Risk and Geo-hazard Vulnerability based on the first level of investigation, in the above-mentioned selected sites which is duly reported in PART II of the volume, chapter by chapter from 1 to 7 with the inclusion of a dedicated part (chapter 8) on the methodology adopted for the geophysical investigation. The policy impact on risk may prove highly relevant as reliable scientific data should provide crucial support to the decision makers on geo-risk management in UNESCO designated sites. The produced data is, in fact, considered very sensitive among designated sites managers to adequately tailor actions according to the magnitude and nature of the risk(s) at stake. It represents a tool for site managers and planners in Albania, bringing out evidence-based findings and providing useful information for: - Establishing guidelines and criteria of interventions in urban areas and cultural sites. - defining priorities for interventions. Finally, the work was framed into an interactive relationship with site managers and integrated into the activities of capacity building performed in the field of DRM under the same project (see point 1 above), in order to develop appropriate risk management systems, including management guidelines and action plans for the cultural sites, along with particular provisions to improve ordinary maintenance, retrofitting of existing infrastructures or monuments, enlarge buffer areas, etc. (prevention/mitigation- emergency preparedness Phase). It is hoped that, despite heavy budget cuts which have impaired the continuation of these project activities in Albania, this project has offered a valuable technical support both to site managers and to emergency responders, meeting the growth of demand for Disaster Risk Reduction in South East Europe. It is foremost hoped to have successfully delivered a message that DRR in Cultural heritage sites is not for human or natural sciences, for technological applications and investigations, for emergency responders or site managers, for ministries and departments as individual actors but for all of them in an inclusive and integrated way since their bond improves risk resilience

Evaluation of PGA for Tirana city

    No full text
We applied deterministic and probabilistic methodologies for seismic hazard assessment at Tirana city, expressed in terms of horizontal peak ground acceleration (PGA). The deterministic evalues of PGA are determined according to the scenario R = 6.4 km and M max = 6.0, while the probabilistic ones have been assessed applying the smoothed seismicity approach. The results that derive from the two methodologies show equal values of PGA for the selected site inside Tirana city and higher than the PGA values established by the official maps as well as the actual seismic coefficients that are being applied by the actually in force national design code KTP-N.2–89 for Tirana area

Analysis of strong motion data from three events ( M W = 4.3–4.9) recorded recently in central Albania area

We present here the results of the analysis in terms of Brune stress-drop and high-frequency diminution parameters of three strong motion records obtained from events that have occurred in the area of Elbasani (central Albania). The data have been recorded by the digitally upgraded SMA-1 instrument situated in the centre of the Elbasani town on the ground level of a small size, one-story building. We observed two distinct levels of stress-drop: the first level comprises the values 25 bars and 40 bars, while the second one is related with the stress-drop value 250 bars. The first class of the stress-drop is typical for areas of normal focal mechanism, while the last one is typical for areas of thrust focal mechanism. The presence of different faulting mechanisms, evidenced by earthquakes occurring around Elbasani, indicates the complexity of faulting environment in this area. As far as high-frequency diminution parameter is concerned, the lowest values are found for the longitudinal components in the range κ = 0.001 − 0.026. The analysis of the transversal components resulted with κ values in the range κ = 0.039 − 0.051. These values are lower than those observed previously for this parameter, for the same soil category
