Devroye Inequality for a Class of Non-Uniformly Hyperbolic Dynamical Systems
Corrected version; To appear in NonlinearityIn this paper, we prove an inequality, which we call "Devroye inequality", for a large class of non-uniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems (M,f). This class, introduced by L.-S. Young, includes families of piece-wise hyperbolic maps (Lozi-like maps), scattering billiards (e.g., planar Lorentz gas), unimodal and H{é}non-like maps. Devroye inequality provides an upper bound for the variance of observables of the form K(x,f(x),...,f^{n-1}(x)), where K is any separately Holder continuous function of n variables. In particular, we can deal with observables which are not Birkhoff averages. We will show in \cite{CCS} some applications of Devroye inequality to statistical properties of this class of dynamical systems
Lectures on the nearest neighbor method
This text presents a wide-ranging and rigorous overview of nearest neighbor methods, one of the most important paradigms in machine learning. Now in one self-contained volume, this book systematically covers key statistical, probabilistic, combinatorial and geometric ideas for understanding, analyzing and developing nearest neighbor methods. Gérard Biau is a professor at Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris). Luc Devroye is a professor at the School of Computer Science at McGill University (Montreal).
RAGE: A Java-implemented Visual Random Generator
Carefully designed Java applications turn out to be efficient and platform independent tools that can compete well with classical implementations of statistical software. The project presented here is an example underlining this statement for random variate generation. An end-user application called RAGE (Random Variate Generator) is developed to generate random variates from probability distributions. A Java class library called JDiscreteLib has been designed and implemented for the simulation of random variables from the most usual discrete distributions inside RAGE. For each distribution, specific and general algorithms are available for this purpose. RAGE can also be used as an interactive simulation tool for data and data summary visualization.
Weighted height of random trees
We consider a model of random trees similar to the split trees of Devroye [30] in which a set of items is recursively partitioned. Our model allows for more flexibility in the choice of the partitioning procedure, and has weighted edges. We prove that for this model, the height H n of a random tree is asymptotic to c log n in probability for a constant c that is uniquely characterized in terms of multivariate large deviations rate functions. This extension permits us to obtain the height of pebbled tries, pebbled ternary search tries, d-ary pyramids, and to study geometric properties of partitions generated by k-d trees. The model also includes all polynomial families of increasing trees recently studied by Broutin, Devroye, McLeish, and de la Salle [17]
Discussion on the paper "On simulation and properties of the stable law" by L. Devroye and L. James
We congratulate the authors for the interesting paper. The reading has been really pleasant and instructive. We discuss briefly only some of the interesting results given in Devroye and James (Stat Methods Appl 2014) with particular attention to evolution problems. The contribution of the results collected in the paper is useful in a more wide class of applications in many areas of applied mathematics. © 2014 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg
