Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Hyperexpression of locus C genes in the HOX network is strongly associated in vivo with human bladder transitional cell carcinomas
Bladder carcinogenesis remains unclear despite the identification of chemical, environmental and genetic factors. It has recently been reported that the chromosomal region 12q13-q15, containing crucial cancer genes such as MDM2, CDK4 and GLI, is amplified in bladder cancer. In the same region are also located the genes of the locus HOX C, flanked by keratin genes whose protein product may be a prognostic marker of bladder cancer. The HOX genes constitute a network of transcription factors controlling embryonal development and play an important role in crucial adult eukaryotic cell functions. The molecular organization of this 39-gene network is unique in the genome and probably acts by regulating phenotypical cell identity. We have analysed the expression of the whole HOX gene network in pairs of normal tumour bladder and in tumoral biopsies. Comparison between normal urothelium and bladder tumour has identified dramatic variations of expression in a block of three genes (HOX C4, HOX C5 and HOX C6) localized in the HOX C locus on the chromosome 12q13 and in the paralogous group 11 HOX genes, involved during normal development in the formation of the urogenital system. These data suggest a key involvement of the HOX gene network, and especially the locus C, in bladder cancer
Nephron Sparing Less: Technique and Review of the Current Literature
OBJECTIVES: Background. Nephron-sparing surgery (NSS) ensures excellent oncological and func'ional outcomes in treating small renal masses. Laparo-Endoscopic-Single-Site Surgery (LESS) is one of the major advances in the evolution of minimally invasive surgery METHODS: A prospective evaluation of patients underwent LESS NSS at our institutions for a solitary, exophytic, enhancing, small (<= 4.0 cm) renal masses and normal controlateral kidney was done. Peri-operative, pathological, hematological data together with a subjective evaluation of the pain (VAS) and the scars were collected. A comprehensive electronic literature search was conducted in May 2011 using the Medline database to identify oil publications relating to LESS NSS. RESULTS: Fourteen patients were operated by a LESS unclamp NSS and 6 patients by a clamp LESS NSS (mean operative time: 125min and 137.4 min; mean blood loss: 207 ml and 113 ml). The mean warm ischemia time in the LESS clamped NSS was 11.1 +/- 2.4 min using an early unclamped technique. Neither conversion to open surgery nor transfusions occurred. Three patients required conversion to standard laparoscopy. Postoperatively, we recorded 1 Clavien II (acute gastritis), 1 Clavien II la (urinary fistula after NSS) and 1 Clavien IV (cerebral stroke) complications. Pathology revealed 13 T1a clear cell carcinoma, 4 complex renal cysts, 2 oncocytoma and 1 angiomyolipoma (surgical margin positive). With a minimal postoperative pain (VAP: 1.8 in POD1) the patients were discharged after 4.4days without variation in eGFR. No local or distant progression was detected. Current literature suggest that LESS NSS can safely and effectively be performed in a variety of urologic settings and represent one of the major interests among the LESS procedures. Although, the quality of evidence of all available studies remains low, mostly being small case series or case control studies from selected centers. CONCLUSIONS: LESS NSS in selected renal masses is feasible, provides postoperative outcomes overlapping the standard counterpart and ensures subjective satisfaction. A more extensive surgical experience and a prolonged follow-up are necessary to point out the role of this technique
[Erectile dysfunction in kidney transplanted patients].
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to achieve and/or maintain an erection for satisfactory sexual performance or intercourse. ED profoundly affects the quality of life. While the effects of dialysis on ED are documented, the benefits of renal transplantation are unknown. This study evaluates the prevalence of ED and the effects of transplantation on ED in kidney transplanted patients. Erectile function was assessed using the self-administered International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF). The domains investigated by IIEF are: (1) erectile function, (2) orgasmic function, (3) sexual desire, (4) intercourse satisfaction, (5) overall satisfaction. At the entry patients underwent clinical examination by urologist and neurologist; blood was collected for biochemical analysis. One-hundred-fifteen (89%) patients filled in the questionnaire. Fifty-two (45%) patients did not complain about ED, which was reported by sixty-three patients (55%). No clinical and/or biochemical difference was found between patients with and without ED. Hypertension was equally present among patients; administration of beta-blockers was significantly more frequent among patients without ED. ED was already present during dialysis in 40 patients. After transplantation ED disappeared in 8 (20%), ameliorated in 13 (32,5%), worsened in 2 (5%), remained unchanged in 17 (42,5%) and appeared "ex novo" in 27 (43%) patients. ED is significantly correlated (p<0.01) to the age of subjects. The data of the present study indicate that: 1) ED is still present in many transplanted men; 2) renal transplantation cures ED in only few cases; 3) ED may appear "ex novo" after transplantation
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
