TCC(graduação) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. Centro de Ciências Biológicas. Biologia.

Genotypie and environmental variability in the growth and photosynthesis of Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis [Bong,] Cam)

In 1990, clonal seedlings from twelve full-sib families of Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.) were planted at four contrasting sites throughout the UK; Newcastleton and Wauchope in the Scottish Borders; Scootmore m Morayshire; and Llandrindod in Wales. There were large differences in nutrient concentrations between sites, with Newcastleton generally having the highest nitrogen- and phosphorus- based nutrient concentrations and Wauchope the lowest. Both sites had a similar soil structure, with the soil at Scootmore having a lower ability to capture moisture. Scootmore experienced the highest temperatures during the growing season and Wauchope the lowest. There was little difference in precipitation levels between sites but there were large differences between years. After 10 years of growth in the field, height, diameter and wood density (using the Pilodyn® technique) were measured. The resulting data showed that Newcastleton and Wauchope were similar and had greater tree growth, whereas Scootmore and Llandrindod were also similar but had smaller tree growth but higher wood density. However, a high mortality rate at Llandrindod excluded this site from further analysis. The 10-year data were used to classify the clones into clusters, and a clone representative of each cluster was chosen for further analysis. The selected clones showed the same growth patterns between sites; C20177 had largest growth rate; C20211 had smallest growth rate but higher wood density; C20208 was intermediate in terms of growth and wood density. However, large variation was apparent at each site, a result of environmental impacts on the growth rates. Chlorophyll, total nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) were extracted from differently aged needles, at different heights in the canopy for each clone at each site. N and р did not vary between clones or heights in the canopy, although did increase with increasing needle age. The distribution of chlorophyll followed light intensity patterns (increasing in shaded older and lower canopy needles) and was significantly higher in C20177. All foliar constituents were higher in Newcastleton trees and lowest in Scootmore. Foliar constituents reflected the nutrient concentration in the soils, although Scootmore had lower foliar concentrations than expected, which may be a result of the reduced moisture availability at this site. The lower uptake of nutrients at Scootmore explains the lower growth rate at Scootmore. Photosynthetic light response curves showed highest photosynthetic and respiration rates at Newcastleton and showed lowest rates at Wauchope. There was little difference in rates between clones or position in the canopy. Various parameters of light efficiency showed little difference between clones, position in the canopy or site. Differences in total non-structural carbohydrates were evident between sites (Wauchope had the highest concentrations) and between clones (C20177 had the lowest). Lower carbohydrate levels in C20177 reflected the greater growth rates by this clone. Destructive biomass sampling of above-ground organs reflected the results of the earlier height, diameter and wood density measurements, indicating that the clones had not changed growth patterns between the years 2000 and 2004. Between sites, only C20177 showed a change in carbon (C) allocation, with a switch from allocating the majority of C to the trunk at favourable sites (Newcastleton) to allocating the majority of с to branches under nutrient or water stress (Wauchope and Scootmore respectively), с allocation below- ground showed no clear pattern between clones, although fine root density was lowest for C20177, suggesting this clone was less effected by nutrient or water stress. Differences in С allocation below-ground between Wauchope and the other two sites also suggested that nutrient concentration had a greater effect on coarse roots. Parameters were calculated from the observed data and used to simulate photosynthetic rates of Sitka spruce in a process-based model of tree evapotranspiration. A comparison between observed and simulated data showed that the model predicted seasonal, site and clonal differences but the absolute values were overestimated at Newcastleton and underestimated at Wauchope and Scootmore. A sensitivity analysis showed that six parameters largely affected the output of the model and, with the majority of these parameters extrapolated from the literature; they would explain the large differences between simulated and observed data

Bong Joon-Ho’s Transnational Challenge To Eurocentrism

    No full text
Through a narrative analysis of three of Bong Joon-ho’s films: The Host (2006), Snowpiercer (2013), and Okja (2017), this thesis explores the impact of global media flow of transnational cinema, foregrounding its potential to convey broader (but more effective) social and ecological political messages through its wider reach to audiences. Each film selected highlights a specific aspect of transnational cinema – postcolonial transnationalism (Shohat and Stam, 1994), transnational odor (Koichi Iwabuchi, 2002), and ecocinema transnationalism (Kääpä Pietari, 2013) - illustrating the fluidity of cinema in the 21st century and further, the unique position Netflix holds in our contemporary mediascape as a global producer and distributor. Netflix is disrupting the traditional cinema system, offering its users worldwide the possibility to watch films and series on demand from home. Using Homi. L. Bhabha, Stuart Hall, and Ella Shohat and Robert Stam’s theories this thesis will show how Bong Joon-ho’s films destabilize the Eurocentric perspective of traditional cinema. Moreover, it will become clear how the transnational character of Bong Joon-ho’s films and their form of distribution has the potential to engender deconstructive viewing positions, and by doing so, challenge Eurocentric perspectives

    Essays on wages and earnings

    No full text
In this dissertation I first try to explain how the wage is determined from a theoretical perspective. Then I provide a test regarding a phenomenon which has not been well explained so far. Finally I turn to an important issue in studies on taxation. In the first chapter I provide models considering when firm sets wage either above or below the market clearing wage although previous models take as granted that the efficiency wage is above the market clearing wage. A simple model, the "selection model", is different from previous models in that the firm considers workers' choices on labor supply as an important factor when it makes decisions on wages and employment. I then set up the "effort model", in which the effort function is determined by the worker while the ability function is exogenously given the selection model. As a result, the models produce set of possible choices which resembles backward-bending labor supply curve. The shape helps explain the minimum wage paradox. In the second chapter I test whether efficiency wage models contribute to explaining interindustry wage differentials. First, I find two variables which could cause firms to pay different wages to seemingly identical workers: the internal and external reference wages. Then, I estimate wage equations with and without those variables, and find that those variables help explain interindustry wage differentials by reducing the standard deviation of wage differentials. In the final chapter I address a problem that study of the behavioral response to the changes in the individual tax rate always encounters: endogeneity. I first develop novel instruments for the marginal tax rate and net-of-tax rate (1 - marginal tax rate). Then, I run regression using the new instruments for the net-of-tax rate and also using either no instrument or an improper instrument. Regressions suggest that the tax rates are endogenous to income and replacing the tax rates with the counterfactual tax rates solves the endogeneity problem. They also imply that the tax rate changes have no significant effect on medium-income earners in the short run.Ph. D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Sang-bong O

Prevalence of parasitic infections on cultured Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758) In Bong County, Liberia

    No full text
This study investigated the prevalence rate, relative abundance and mean intensity of parasites infecting cultured Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus L. in three fish farms, Gbarnga, Warta and CARI in Bong County, Liberia. Organs from thirty fish samples were examined from September 2016 to February 2017, along with water quality parameters. Results showed the occurrence of seven parasites including protozoans, monogeneans, digeneans, cestodes, hirudineans, nematodes and crustaceans which were organ specific in terms of infection. The prevalence of the parasites varied seasonally, with the highest numbers occurring in November-January. The low prevalence rate, relative abundance and mean intensity of the parasites showed no threat to fish farmers in Liberia. All the water quality parameters were at desirable levels for the culture of the fish except nitrite, which was beyond the threshold for sustainable fish culture. It is therefore concluded that although parasitic infections in the three farms in the Bong County were low, best farm management practices are essential
