Burd publishes report on prenatal alcohol exposure
No full textGRAND FORKS, N.D.—Currently, about 50 percent of infants in the United States and in North Dakota have some alcohol exposure in early pregnancy. Most of these infants’ mothers then quit drinking. However, about 6 to 10 percent of pregnant women drink throughout their pregnancy.
“Many people thinking about this issue would recognize the link between maternal drug use and developmental problems, which is a major public health issue in the United States and across the world,” said Larry Burd, PhD, a professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and director of the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Center at the UND SMHS. The center provides prevention, diagnostic, and treatment services for people of all ages who have concerns related to prenatal alcohol exposure.
“However, the much larger problem of prenatal alcohol exposure is a far more serious and much larger public health issue across the world and in North Dakota that is often overlooked,” Burd said. “This level of prenatal exposure is linked to increasing rates of complications during pregnancy and in the newborn.”
The 2015 North Dakota Legislative Assembly created the North Dakota Task Force on Substance Exposed Newborns to study the growing problem and to produce a report for the 65th Legislative Assembly, convening in 2017. Burd was the author of the report submitted to the task force, A Report to the North Dakota Task Force on Substance Exposed Newborns.
“In some cases these children will have a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder,” Burd said. “These disorders typically are lifelong disorders and extremely costly. The tragedy here is that these are preventable conditions

No full textThe ability of medroxyprogesterone acetate to premature delivery delay was investigated in nine chronically catheterized pregnant sheep (125 to 130 days' gestation). Catheters were placed for measurement of intrauterine pressure and uterine vein concentrations of progesterone,17 beta-estradiol,and 15-keto-13,14-dihydroxyprostaglandin F2a. Premature parturition was induced in all animals by infusion of dexamethasone (1 mg/24 hours) to the fetus. Three ewes served as controls,three ewes received oral medroxyprogesterone acetate (5 mg/kg/day) 48 hours prior to the start of and during dexamethasone (early medroxyprogesterone acetate),and the remaining three animals received oral medroxyprogesterone acetate 12 hours after the onset of dexamethasone infusion (late medroxyprogesterone acetate). The lengths of time from dexamethasone until the onset of labor and from dexamethasone until delivery were compared,and were significantly longer for each group compared to control times. Of all endocrine events analyzed,the fall in plasma progesterone was the most consistent in all groups,showing that animals with rapid falls in progesterone levels (control group) tended to deliver earlier. These results demonstrate that medroxyprogesterone acetate can delay premature parturition in the sheep. No full textTwo subspecies of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) can be found in southeast Europe: Fagus sylvatica ssp. sylvatica L. and Fagus sylvatica ssp. orientalis (Lipsky) Greut. & Burd. (Fagus orientalis Lipsky). In a previous study, based on genetic diversity patterns and morphological characters, indications of hybridization between both subspecies were found in northeastern Greece, a known contact zone of F. sylvatica and F. orientalis. Nevertheless, potential genetic admixture has not been investigated systematically before. Here, we investigated genetic diversity and genetic structure of 14 beech populations originating from Greece and Turkey as well as of two reference F. sylvatica populations from Germany based on nine expressed sequence tag-simple sequence repeat (EST-SSR) markers. Very low genetic differentiation was detected among F. sylvatica populations (mean GST: 0.005) as well as among F. orientalis populations (mean GST: 0.008), but substantial differentiation was detected between populations of the two subspecies (mean GST: 0.122). Indications for hybridization between both subspecies were revealed for one population in Greece. One of the genetic markers showed specific allele frequencies for F. sylvatica and F. orientalis and may be used as a diagnostic marker in future studies to discriminate both subspecies
