2006 and June 2009. This commentary traces the development of a range of compositional ideas throughout the portfolio. These revolve around the creation of multilayered textures where all the material and all subtle variations thereof are audible, leading to an investigation of rhythmical block durations and the role of memory. The context in which these ideas arose is provided through discussion of specific existing work that closely relates to the portfolio, in particular by John Cage, Morton Feldman, György Ligeti and Giacinto Scelsi

No full textl 28 febbraio 1949 il Parlamento italiano rende legge il progetto Provvedimenti per incrementare l’occupazione operaia, agevolando la costruzione di case per lavoratori, presentato al Consiglio nel luglio dell’anno precedente dal ministro democristiano Amintore Fanfani. Con esso, si darà avvio a quell’intenso programma nazionale di edilizia sociale noto come Piano INA-Casa.Finanziato con un sistema misto che prevede la partecipazione dello Stato, dei datori di lavoro e, attraverso una trattenuta sul salario mensile, dei lavoratori dipendenti, il piano palesa il suo carattere di programma di solidarietà nazionale, facendosi strumento per allargare non solo l’occupazione operaia, come nei dichiarati obiettivi, ma anche l’impegno del comparto dei progettisti italiani, finendo con l’essere «un esempio caratteristico d’incontro tra esigenze sociali e architettura». Ciò entro le previsioni e le possibilità attivate e concesse da regolamenti orientatati «a una revisione e a un aggiornamento continuo delle norme generali, contro ogni consuetudine burocratica». Questo carattere di urgenza determina certo la compressione dei tempi di redazione dei progetti, ma anche la semplificazione dei singoli iter approvativi, con l’effetto di costituire una inattesa possibilità, un inaspettato passaggio libero per alcuni dei giovani architetti coinvolti nell’azione. Da un lato la genericità e la scarsa definizione degli elaborati grafici richiesti consentono modifiche, anche sostanziali, in corso d’opera capaci di lasciar comparire elementi spesso completamente assenti nelle tavole di progetto approvate, dall’altro l’urgenza con la quale le amministrazioni locali manifestano la necessità di realizzare gli interventi garantisce agli architetti autonomia su alcuni aspetti di progetto sottratti a una condivisione preliminare. Si tratta di elementi sovente inattuali, poco ortodossi rispetto alle logiche e ai rigori della modernità, inaspettati, a volte contraddittori, che aprono su quella dimensione sperimentale che la grande scommessa sociale contiene dentro di sé, e della quale continuamente si alimenta. L’articolo si propone di descrivere alcune di queste tracce, nascoste nei progetti ed emerse nelle architetture della stagione INA-Casa genovese

No full textWe have analysed the XMM-Newton X-ray spectra of the yellow giant 31 Com with the aim of deriving information on the coronal structures of this archetypical Hertzsprung-gap star. To determine the emission measure distribution vs. temperature, EM(T), and the elemental abundances of the coronal plasma, with an accurate line-based approach, we have developed a new method for simple and accurate line measurements, based on rebinning and co-adding the two RGS spectra. We have reconstructed the EM(T) independently with both APED and CHIANTI atomic databases in order to investigate possible differences in the final outcome of the analysis, and we have obtained consistent results. The derived emission measure distribution has a well defined peak at T ̃ 107 K and a significant amount of plasma at higher temperatures; there is also evidence for plasma at temperatures below ̃106.5 K, with a mean electron density of ̃3 × 1010 cm-3, as inferred from the line ratio of the O Vii triplet. We have made a global fitting of the EPIC spectra, using multi-component isothermal (3-T) model, and then compared the results with the EM(T), looking for a consistent multi-temperature description of both the RGS and EPIC spectra, over the whole spectral range. While the EM(T) and the 3-T models individually provide a good description of the data set on which they are based, none of them describes adequately the data of all the other instruments; the disagreements may be related, at least in part, to cross-calibration problems. Finally, we have used the EM(T) to derive information about the properties of the coronal structures. Our results indicate that the corona of 31 Com is dominated by a class of magnetic loops with peak temperature ̃107 K and apparently more isothermal than the solar ones.

Coronal Properties of G_type stars in different evolutionary phases
No full textWe report on the analysis of XMM-Newton observations of three G-type stars in very different evolutionary phases: the weak-lined T Tauri star HD 283572, the Zero Age Main Sequence star EK Dra and the Hertzsprung-gap giant star 31 Com. They all have high X-ray luminosity (∼1031 erg s -1 for HD 283572 and 31 Com and ∼1030erg s -1 for EK Dra). We compare the Emission Measure Distributions (EMDs) of these active coronal sources, derived from high-resolution XMM-Newton grating spectra, as well as the pattern of elemental abundances vs. First Ionzation Potential (FIP). We also perform time-resolved spectroscopy of a flare detected by XMM from EK Dra. We interpret the observed EMDs as the result of the emission of ensembles of magnetically confined loop-like structures with different apex temperatures. Our analysis indicates that the coronae of HD 283572 and 31 Com are very similar in terms of dominant coronal magnetic structures, in spite of differences in the evolutionary phase, surface gravity and metallicity. In the case of EK Dra the distribution appears to be slightly flatter than in the previous two cases, although the peak temperature is similar. © ESO 2005
