Differences in voting in the Parliament of the Czech Republic: senators and their relation to political parties

    No full text
Author's thesis is concerned with differences between voting of parliamentary party groups within both chambers of Czech Parliament, Chamber of Deputies and Senate. It primarily focuses on senators and their relation to their respective parties. Author articulates three main hypothesis which he is trying to verify. Firstly, he anticipates senators to be less bounded to their parties than deputies. Secondly, he suggests that parliamentary party groups in both chambers become more united when it comes to more important voting. Lastly, the author considers the number of seats of parties in government in the Senate has no influence on either stability or legislative initiatives of the government. The theoretical part briefly describes Parliament of the Czech Republic, its composition, the role of the chambers and the legislative process. It also introduces outcomes of research made by Sociological Institute of Academy of Science of the Czech Republic in Parliament aimed at examining the role of deputies and senators from their own perspective. Also, the study "The Importance of Concurrence: The Impact of Bicameralism on Government Formation and Duration" by James N. Druckman and Michael F. Thies is presented. The analytical part extrapolates the main outcomes of analysis made and brings answers related to the..

    Contemporary Social Contract Theories

Contemporary Social Contract Theories The thesis is intended to be an introduction into contemporary social contract theories. John Rawls' book A Theory of Justice is a seminal work in this field. The thesis, however, does focus not only on the approach adopted by Rawls, but on the theories of other authors as well - that of J. Buchanan, D. Gauthier, T. Scanlon and R. Nozick. These remain quite unknown in the Czech context. The structure of the thesis should allow for a comparison between the respective theories as the author starts with the object of the social contract, proceeds to the parties of the contract and, finally, to its content. Special attention is devoted to the game theory which models some of the typical interpersonal interactions and, using its theoretical apparatus, can illustrate problems of social cooperation - the key theme of virtually all social contract theories. Eventually, the author tries to outline the way analytic philosophy views the social contract. In its eyes, the social contract is a necessary implication of the existence of language

The aim of this master thesis is to describe current relations between political parties and the public. Considering the potential extent of the topic concerned, this thesis focuses on providing an overview of the individual phenomena which can be observed with regard to the relations. The thesis begins with a theoretical chapter which outlines subjects of a political system. The second part focuses on a description of historical starting points of the topic concerned. Following the necessary background information for a comprehensive understanding of the topic, the author presents the main, third part which is the core of the thesis. This part is divided into seven chapters in which the individual phenomena, concerning the current relations between political parties and the public, are introduced. The aim of the third, crucial part is not only to describe the concerned phenomena but also to critically evaluate certain measures which are meant to prevent the described problem. A summary of steps which lead to the described situation are included as well. In the first chapter the author focuses on a crisis of the representation model, especially with regard to the issue of alienation between the representatives and the represented. The second chapter focuses on the issue of electoral volatility and the..

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
