On the Erdős-Pósa property for long holes in C_4-free graphs

    No full text
We prove that there exists a function f(k)=O(k^2logk) such that for every C4-free graph G and every k∈N, G either contains k vertex-disjoint holes of length at least 6, or a set X of at most f(k) vertices such that G−X has no hole of length at least 6. This answers a question of Kim and Kwon [Erdős-Pósa property of chordless cycles and its applications. JCTB 2020

Many studies using various approaches have tried to solve the conundrum of so-called cancer heterogeneity. However, even though many successes have been earned in this area using the genomic analysis, the identification of precise cancer subtypes, which can be informative and useful from the biological and clinical point of view, still remains a challenge. Among the many trials, the multi-layered genomic profiles analysis, in which the genomic copy numbers and gene expression profiles are analyzed by the integrative way to define the chromosomal regions with both genomic copy number variation and concomitant transcriptional deregulation, is posited to provide a promising strategy to identify driver targets. Here, the integrative analysis of the DNA copy numbers and gene expression profiles of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was performed. By comparing DNA copy numbers in HCC subtypes, which have been previously defined based on gene expression pattern, it was found that the HCC subtype showing aggressive phenotype without expressing stemness-related genes had DNA copy number alteration with concordant gene expression changes in the specific chromosomal area at 6p21-24. Among the genes residing at 6p21-24, IER3 was identified as a potential driver. The clinical utility of IER3 copy numbers was demonstrated by validating its clinical correlation in the independent cohorts. In addition, short hairpin RNA-mediated knock-down experiment revealed the functional relevance of IER3 in liver cancer progression. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that genomic copy number alterations with transcriptional deregulation at 6p21-24 identify an aggressive HCC phenotype and a novel functional biomarker

DESCRIPTION OF PAREMCIBACTER CONGREGATUS COMB. NOV. Paremcibacter congregatus comb. nov. (con.gre.ga′ tus. L. part. adj. congregatus clustered, always clustered when cultured in lipid medium). Basonym: Emcibacter congregatus Zhao et al. 2018. The description is as given by Zhao et al. 2018. The type strain, ZYLT (=KCTC 62328 T =JCM 32378 T =MCCC 1K03526 T), was isolated from a cultured in situ sediment sample collected on the coast of the East China Sea. The GenBank/EMBL/MMBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence is MG051279 and the genome sequence is CP041025.Published as part of Park, Mi-Jeong, Namirimu, Teddy, Yang, Sung-Hyun & Kwon, Kae Kyoung, 2020, Description of Luteithermobacter gelatinilyticus gen. nov., sp. nov., and Paremcibacter congregatus gen. nov., comb. nov. via reclassification of the genus Emcibacter, pp. 4691-4697 in International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology 70 (8) on page 4696, DOI: 10.1099/ijsem.0.004334, http://zenodo.org/record/622400

Obstructions for bounded shrub-depth and rank-depth

    No full text
Shrub-depth and rank-depth are dense analogues of the tree-depth of a graph. It is well known that a graph has large tree-depth if and only if it has a long path as a subgraph. We prove an analogous statement for shrub-depth and rank-depth, which was conjectured by Hlin\v{e}n\'y, Kwon, Obdr\v{z}\'alek, and Ordyniak [Tree-depth and vertex-minors, European J.~Combin. 2016]. Namely, we prove that a graph has large rank-depth if and only if it has a vertex-minor isomorphic to a long path. This implies that for every integer tt, the class of graphs with no vertex-minor isomorphic to the path on tt vertices has bounded shrub-depth.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures; accepted to Journal of Combinatorial Theory Ser.

Catalyst preparation for fabrication of a MEMS fuel reformer

    No full text
Fabrication procedures for a micro fuel reformer including catalyst preparation, coating, and patterning on a wafer are described. CU/ZnO catalyst was selected for the steam reforming of methanol. The catalysts were prepared by three different procedures according to the precipitation sequence and temperature. The effect of precipitation conditions on the catalyst characteristics was investigated by BET, XRD and SEM analysis. Catalytic activity and coating quality were tested to find the optimum precipitation condition for the uniform and crack-free catalyst layer on a wafer. For coating purpose, the prepared catalyst was ground by ball-mill into powder and mixed with binder in the deionized water. Simultaneous precipitation of catalyst and binder on the wafer produced a catalyst layer that is uniform and rigidly found to the wafer surface. The amount of the coated catalyst was 5-8 mg/cm(2) and the thickness was 30 mu m. By repetition of the coating procedure, the catalyst mass up to 15 mg/cm(2) was obtained with increased reactivity. Patterned catalyst layer was obtained by a novel lift-off process of the PVA sacrificial layer. The process consists of the PVA decomposition by heating instead of etching the wafer. A micro fuel reformer was fabricated using a typical lithography procedure including catalyst coating and patterning process and its performance was measured. The catalyst-coated micro fuel reformer had higher performances than the packed-bed reactor. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Tae Kwon Do achievement and locus of control

    No full text
The purpose of this study is to show that children who reach high ranks in Tae Kwon Do taught in a traditional manner will have a greater propensity towards an internal locus of control. The psychological legacy of Tae Kwon Do is in tune with many aspects of Rotter\u27s Locus of control theory. In the words of the president of the Pan American Martial Arts Union, Chang K. Kwak, Through the martial arts we learn control and that control can be applied to all areas of life. Success is not measured in a set of short term goals... Learning is a continual process. This study compared beginning and advanced Tae Kwon Do students. Students were randomly tested during a two week period using the Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Scale. Using a T-Test, significant findings were found. Advanced students had a greater propensity towards an internal locus of control. The findings support the hypothesis that Tae Kwon Do training taught in a traditional manner increases characteristics consistent with an internal locus of control
