Kusum – Multipurpose Tree, Yet Not Popular
20-22 Despite providing an array of benefits, the Kusum tree has not yet gained the popularity it deserves. THERE are many trees that are grown for multiple products. They are known as multipurpose trees (MPTs), a term widely used in agro-forestry. While such trees provide shade, habitat for organisms, soil improvement, etc, many useful products are also obtained from them such as fruits, nuts and leaves as food as well as timber, firewood and variety of metabolic chemicals, which may be used in the form of home remedies and for traditional medicine. Thus MPTs fulfill more than one basic need of human beings and have a high impact on food and health security of farmers, especially those living in and around the rural and forest areas. Schleichera oleosa (Lour.) Oken, commonly known as lac tree or kusum, is a forest tree species of tropical and subtropical region. The tree is utilized for multifarious purposes and is a boon for a subsistence farmer. The extended foliage and canopy of the kusum tree provides good shade and is suitable for mixed farming with other heat susceptible economic plants. The tree is commonly known to host lac insects (Kerria lacca Kerr.) for production of natural, biodegradable and commercially important lac resins that serve as a livelihood support to millions of poor farmers in states like Jharkhand, Chattisgarh, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. Various plant parts of kusum are either a favorite pick of traditional vaids for indigenous therapies and medicine or a source of food, animal feed, timber and oil. Oil and timber are utilized in small-scale industries. The kusum tree is also grown as an avenue tree or wayside tree. </smarttagtype
Studies on the Potentiality of Kusum Oil (Schleichera Oleosa) as a Core and Mould Binder for Foundry Applications
The paper is an attempt to establish kusum oil as a core and
mould binder for foundry applications. Different percentage of kusum
oil, with or without additives are mixed with sand and baked at
different time and temperature, to evaluate the tensile strength. The
results were compared with the tensile strength of sand-mixes with
linseed oil. Kusum oil yielded better baked tensile strength and shows
better baking cycles. The gas evolution characteristics of the sand-
mixes containing kusum oil was also studied
EN 206:2014: Cusum method or mean value criterion?
In England.

Standardization of Protocols for Plant Growth Media and Seasons for Cuttings of Kusum [Schleichera oleosa (Lour.) Oken]
Growing cuttings of Kusum (Schleichera oleosa), is a major hurdle for the Lac growers in India. This species is primarily known as the lac host tree for lac production besides other multiple uses. Due to high population pressure and market demand, the natural population and genetic diversity of this species is declining day-by-day. Maintaining the selected best germplasm through clonal propagation is the need of the hour. Mass multiplication through cuttings could only be the right choice of the grower if found successful. But, no successful cuttings of Kusum have been reported till date. Therefore, an experiment was carried out during 2018-21 following Completely Randomized Design (CRD) to standardize the plant growth media and the seasons for growing cuttings at the very initial stages of the experiment. The result revealed that the root, shoot and leaf growths in cuttings of Kusum are significantly influenced by the different plant growth media. The maximum rooting initiation (43.33±0.96%) was observed in the cuttings grown in media of Coco peat : FYM : Vermicompost (2:2:1). The maximum rooting (44.50±1.85 %) in the cuttings prepared from seedlings of less than 5 years old and 33.75 ± 1.49 % rooting in the cuttings prepared from 10-20 years old plantation, were recorded in the month of May. Based on the present investigation, it is concluded that the plant growing media having the composition of Coco peat : FYM : Vermicompost (2:2:1) is more appropriate and recommended for growing cuttings of Kusum. Moreover, the month of May is highly recommended for growing cuttings of Kusum for maximum success. Regarding selection of mother plant, it is advised to select the Kusum plant from the plantation aged less than five years old
Experimental Investigation on Effect of Kusum and Safflower Oil Methyl Ester in a VCR Engine
ME-Thermal EngineeringDue to continuous increase in the dependency on fossil fuels and hiking its price because of fast depletion of petroleum resource have promoted to the shift toward green energy sources such as alternative renewable and sustainable fuel. Biodiesel has been recognized as clean and potential renewable fuel which is obtained from biomass resources and animal fats. The aim of this experimental investigation is to optimize biodiesel production from safflower and kusum seed oil followed by transesterification process. As per consideration of maximum biodiesel yield, the optimum parameters were 4:1 molar ratio, 1.5% KOH catalyst concentration, 75 minutes reaction time and 6:1 molar ratio, 1% KOH catalyst concentration, 60 minutes reaction time followed by safflower and kusum oil methyl ester production respectively. The yield of safflower and kusum oil methyl ester corresponding to optimized process parameters were 97.07% and 90.34% respectively. Three types of blended fuels B10, B20 and B30 of each biodiesel have been studied and all tests were carried out in variable compression ratio (VCR) engine at constant speed 1500 rpm, compression ratio 17:1 under different load conditions. The various performance, emission and combustion characteristics like brake power (BP), brake thermal efficiency (BThE), brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC), mechanical efficiency (MEff), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC), nitrogen oxide (NOx), exhaust gas temperature (EGT), peak cylinder pressure and heat release rate (HRR) were evaluated. It was observed that the performance of all blended fuels of safflower oil biodiesel almost same to the diesel fuel and B20 blend fuel of kusum oil biodiesel showed better performance among the all tested fuels KB10, KB30 and standard diesel. The emissions of CO, HC decreased by increasing percentage proportion of biodiesel in blend fuel and apart from that NOx, EGT were increased. It was concluded that by comparing the SOME and KOME blend fuels, the overall performance of KOME blend fuels have been noticed better than that of SOME blend fuels
