Twelve houses restored in Japan and Italy
The restoration of architecture in a nation is a project strictly connected to its culture, its society, as well as to the weather conditions and to its political and economic background. The contemporary culture, in particular, has developed an awareness of the fact that the main purpose of the conservation of monuments and landscape is not only protecting the matter of social well but also its intrinsic values, strongly connected to the sense of belonging to the place. The necessity of searching these values comes from the need of knowledge of the different cultural references that permit to man to direct his choices as concerns conservation and safeguard compared to popular areas of interest apparently of less importance but vivid from the cultural and social point of view. And this is the birth of the relationship between values and needs connected to the demand of transformation of urban and housing contexts. On these assumptions the book Twelve houses restored in Italy and Japan focuses on restoration projects of historical urban contexts, where the theme of living produced changes, influenced different intervention methods and functional choices without changing the sign of history. The book wants to introduce restoration projects comparing different cultural realities and architectonical methods that characterized the present situation in Italy and Japan. The experiences described in the book notice an interesting sharing among the different methods of restoration

Inheritance of sanctuaries–Reuse of Kofuns in Tokyo
“Kofuns” are Japanese ancient tombs that were built from the mid-third to seventh centuries. Some of these Kofuns have survived into the present urban tissue despite being reused and showing changes in their form and their meaning. This study investigates panoramically the modes of reuse of ancient tumuli in today’s modern Tokyo by considering the characteristic phenomenon of “inheritance of sanctuaries.”As the base of consideration, I present the historical background of Kofun and its distribution in the Tokyo area. Then I clarify the mode of reuse of Kofuns from seven points as follows: “Reuse as cemeteries,” “Reuse as precincts of temples and shrines,” “Reuse as Fujizuka,” “Reuse as mounds in the garden,” “Reuse as signposts,” “Reuse of soil,” and “Reuse of stone.” By presenting some characteristic cases, such as Matsuchi-yama Shoden, Shiba Maruyama Kofun, and Tomizuka Kofun at Waseda, this study reveals the inheritance of topological meaning as sanctuaries of Kofuns in later periods.

Gli Uffizi di Giorgio Vasari : la fabbrica e la rappresentazione
È da lungo tempo tramontata la concezione
strumentale dell’opera storica,
architettonica ed artistica di Giorgio
Vasari quale fonte principale per la storia
del Rinascimento artistico italiano.
Contrariamente ai progressi degli studi
specialistici che sono stati dedicati
all’architetto aretino principalmente nel
secolo XX, oggi raramente nei percorsi
di ricerca il suo contributo culturale è
citato se non per ricordarne l’esistenza
per le “Vite”. Vasari è stato un virtuoso
pittore ed un architetto innovatore,
capace di confrontarsi con progetti di
ampie prospettive urbanistiche e tra
questi certamente emerge il progetto
voluto dal Duca Cosimo I de’ Medici
per gli Uffizi di Firenze (1559-70)
