Technical Efficiency in Maize Production in Madhya Pradesh: Estimation and Implications
The state of Madhya Pradesh is one of the traditional maize growing states, accounting for 13 per cent of the total maize area and contributing equally to the total maize production in the country. However, its productivity when compared to other maize growing states is very low. The study has found that even though a majority of the farmers cultivate improved maize cultivars, the overall technology adoption by them is poor. This may be due to the inability of a majority of farmers to follow the recommended package of practices for the improved cultivars because of the high costs involved in their adoption and lack of infrastructural facilities. Therefore, steps need to be initiated to solve this problem. A comparison of costs on cultivation of traditional, composite and hybrid cultivars has revealed that the cost increases significantly on using the improved cultivars due to higher requirements of fertilizers, irrigation, and plant protection chemicals as compared to those in the traditional varieties. However, with the significant increase in yield, the unit cost of production has been much lower in the case of improved cultivars. The economics of cultivation of maize when compared with its competing crops like paddy and soybean have revealed that the paddy is superior to all the maize cultivars in output/input ratio. The hybrid maize has been found superior to soybean as well as paddy in terms of net returns and hence the farmers could cultivate maize rather than paddy since the latter has higher water requirement. The estimation of technical efficiency of the farmers has revealed that on an average the sample farms operate 23 per cent below the frontier output levels. Hence, it has been observed that the maize output can be increased through adoption of proper technology by the farmers. It requires support from both the state government (in terms of providing infrastructural/ institutional support like drying and storage facilities, arrangement for assured procurement, etc.) as well as the private companies (in terms of supply of quality seeds and chemical pesticides at reasonable prices).Agricultural and Food Policy,
High-Order Numerical Schemes for Compressible Flows
High-order numerical methods for Computational Fluid Dynamics have undergone significant fundamental developments over the last two decades owing to combined efforts from the applied mathematics and engineering communities. Even though low-order numerical methods are still the standard in industry, the increased requirements of engineering applications have led to significant scientific interest in developing efficient and robust numerical methods. Applications that would benefit from high-order numerical methods include Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS), Large Eddy simulations (LES), Computational Aero-Acoustics (CAA) and vortex dominated flows. The objective of this thesis is to successfully implement and validate a fifth order traditional WENO scheme in a finite volume framework, for a solver currently being developed in the Aerodynamics group of TU Delft. A detailed literature study of classical numerical schemes has been performed along with a study of the traditional WENO schemes. The quality of results using the fifth order scheme is studied for a variety of test cases to study the shock capturing ability of the scheme. Implementing the finite volume WENO schemes includes the calculation of numerical flux at cell faces using Gaussian quadrature formulas. The effect of varying the number of Gaussian quadrature points while calculating the numerical flux is investigated. Also, the effect of the approximate Riemann solvers on the quality of results is studied by implementing four different Riemann solvers and studying the results for different test cases using these Riemann solvers. The test cases are governed by the inviscid Euler equations and deals with flow in the compressible regime. They involve shocks, other discontinuities and often also complicated structures in the smooth part of the solution which tests the design of the schemes to be non-oscillatory at the discontinuities and still gives a high order of accuracy in the smooth parts of the flow. Convergence tests of the error for test cases using the linear advection equation is used to study the order of accuracy of the scheme using different number of Gaussian quadrature points. The tests clearly show that the order of accuracy remains the same irrespective of the number of quadrature points used. This result is important as it allows simulation run with just one quadrature point which is less expensive, and saves memory. This result is highly relevant while running test cases for LES where very fine grids have to be used. WENO schemes have been considered to be too dissipative for LES in their traditional form. This is indeed true as seen by Kelvin-Helmholtz type small scale vortices (which are characteristic of high Reynolds number flows), even in the test cases using the inviscid Euler equations, due to the inherent dissipation in the schemes. However, this could be seen as motivation for using the WENO schemes for Implicit LES where no explicit sub-grid scale models are used to represent the unresolved scales. The different Riemann solvers exhibit different levels of dissipation and recommendations are made for the choice of Riemann solvers according to the application.Aerospace EngineeringFlight Performance and Propulsio

New business model of flexible housing
The Open Building (OB) and the concept of flexible housing has alwaysassociated with user’s ability to respond to changing demand. It is necessary that housing can adap to changing market conditions and different users’ requirements. Flexibility makes a crucial concept that one cannot ignore. However, extra investments for future flexibility are still hardly made because the early investments affect different parties that are not involved in the future adaptation thus made it unaffordable to the mass. Also, the final life-cycle costs incurred in considering alternative solutions are more important than simply investing extra money in providing for flexibility (R.P. Geraedts). Our societyandeconomy are always changing. Nonetheless, the way we produce, the linear system that contains make-take-ispose consumption, had not changed since the started off an industrial revolution a long time ago. Thus, resulted in scarcity, depletion and waste of resources, environmental pollution, and climate change. Innovative leasing using circular economy(CE) is a recent way of looking at sustainability. The basis of CE is thinking in circular supply chains, maximizing the value of materials in which products are reused, remanufactured and recycled (MacArthur, 2013). The authors have illustrated several methods for integrating flexible housing with circular economy concept resulting in a conceptual framework of a new business model of flexible housing. Results of this study contribute to an alternative affordable, flexible housing in the market.Management in the Built EnvironmentArchitecture and The Built Environmen
A novel L1-Predictor-Corrector method for the numerical solution of the generalized-Caputo type fractional differential equations
S M, Sivalingam/0000-0003-0818-9007; Kumar, Pushpendra/0000-0002-7755-2837This paper proposes a novel L1 -based predictor-corrector method for the fractional differential equations involving generalized-Caputo type derivative. A decomposition scheme is used to obtain the three-point predictor-corrector formula. The error and stability of the proposed method are given in detail. A computer virus and a five-dimensional Hopfield neural network models are solved using the proposed approach.UGC NFOBC Ph.D. Fellowship, India [[202122]-TN13000109]; National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM), Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India [02011/18/2023 NBHM (R.P)/ RD II/5952]The first author received the financial support of UGC NFOBC Ph.D. Fellowship, India (Ref.
