Examples of groups in abstract Algebra Course Books

    No full text
This study has been conducted with the aim to examine the examples of Abelian and non-Abelian groups given in the abstract algebra course books in the university level. The non-examples of Abelian groups serve as examples of non-Abelian groups. Examples with solutions in the course books are trusted by the students and hence miscellaneous of those are required to clarify the subject in enough detail. The results of the current study show that the examples of Abelian groups are about the same among three course books, including number sets only with known operations. The examples of non-Abelian groups are rare in comparison and encapsulate the nonnumeric sets which are novel to students. The current study shows the mentioned examples are not sufficiently examined in the course books. Suggestions for the book writers are given in the study. Mainly it is suggested that more and various examples of Abelian and especially non-Abelian groups should be included in the course books

Şeref, Fulya (Dogus Author) -- Veliev, Oktay A. (Dogus Author)In this article we obtain the sharp asymptotic formulas for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the non-self-adjoint operators generated by a system of the Sturm-Liouville equations with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. Using these asymptotic formulas, we find a condition on the potential for which the root functions of these operators form a Riesz basis

Özaksoy Sonüstün, Fulya (Dogus Author) -- Conference full title: 34th International Physics Congress on Turkish Physical Society, TPS 2018; Bodrum Municipality - Herodot Culture CenterKonacik-Bodrum; Turkey; 5 September 2018 through 9 September 2018.In this paper we aimed to determine chaotic behavior of electricity consumption in the USA for the period from 1973:1 to 2018:3. For this purpose, nonlinear structure of the model was determined by BDS test. And then, Lyapunov Exponents was employed to specify chaotic behavior of electricity consumption in the USA

Bibliometric Analysis Of Studies Focusing On Critical Thinking İn Early Childhood

Research on Education and PsychologyThis study aimed to examine studies on critical thinking in early childhood through bibliometric analysis. In the research, 251 studies on the concept of critical thinking were selected according to the inclusion criteria and analyzed with the VOS-viewer program. In the study, co-author, co-reference, co-citation and co-word analysis of the studies on the concept of critical thinking was carried out according to the distribution of the ten most cited authors and publications, years, published sources and countries. According to the results of bibliometric analysis on critical thinking, it was concluded that the birthplace of the subject and the most productive country is the USA. According to the co-author analysis, it was concluded that Daniel and Gagnon were the authors who contributed the most to the subject, Lipman and Kuhn according to the result of co-citation analysis, and Dovigo and Karadağ according to the result of co-citation analysis. In addition, according to co-word analysis, the most recurring keywords in the studies were critical thinking, early childhood education, creativity, early childhood, cognitive development, teacher training, preschool. As a result of the research, it was concluded that the number of studies on critical thinking in early childhood is low and there should be an increase in studies with children as the sample

University students’ self-efficacy and achievement in derivative concept

The purpose of the current study was to explore the relationship between self-efficacy and achievement in the derivative concept in university level. University students from education, engineering and science faculties attended the study. 1660 students’ data were gathered and the study has demonstrated that the there is a moderate and positive relationship between university students’ self-efficacy levels and their achievement in derivative concept. It is suggested that university level students’ self-efficacy levels be addressed when considering their achievement in the derivative concept

Guiding the Transition to University Mathematics with Learning Analytics

    No full text
In response to a recognised problem in higher education, being the limited use of scalable learning analytics (LA) (e.g. Hernandez-de-Menendez et al., 2022, Viberg et al., 2018 ), this study has designed and implemented a transition course for mathematics. This transition course aims to support first year university students in their transition from secondary to tertiary education with a focus on providing real time feedback to students and teachers through the use of LA (Kula et al., 2023). Feedback was provided with the data that was gathered throughout the course via students’ answers and attempts to questions and data from the interactive videos. Students were presented with an individual overview of their effort using a star based visualisation per sub-topic of the transition course indicating their level of understanding to be adequate for the university mathematics. Moreover, the teacher is presented with a whole class heatmap visualisation of the mathematical subjects which is based on the student attempts and their current result (adapted from Lee et al., 2016). The bridging course was implemented in the Civil Engineering bachelor program, and will be adapted to many bachelor programs at the University of Twente. We have received interest from various national and international universities, both in this course and its use of LA. This use of LA, to give students and teachers the feedback based on question attempts and results, is replicable to different courses. We would like to scale up the transition course as well as its use of LA both horizontally to a large audience of students and teachers national and international dimensions, and also vertically to various disciplines to adapt the use of LA. Özaksoy, Fulya (Dogus Author)This paper aims to analyze Post-Keynesian Phillips Curve by using non-linear ARDL approach and non-linear Granger causality method for the period from 1957 to 2015 in Canada. This study is differed from other empirical paper by using non-linear ARDL method which determined there is long-run asymmetric relationship between the selected macroeconomic variables for Canada. Canada exhibits bi-directional causality relationship between inflation-unemployment, unemployment-economic growth and inflation-economic growth which refers that the country has flexible labor market

Özaksoy Sonüstün, Fulya (Dogus Author) -- Conference full text: 34th International Physics Congress on Turkish Physical Society, TPS 2018; Bodrum Municipality - Herodot Culture CenterKonacik-Bodrum; Turkey; 5 September 2018 through 9 September 2018.In this study, we attempt to test chaotic behavior of selected the variables and to determine chaotic relation between economic growth and coal consumption for the period from January, 1973 to March, 2018 in the USA by using Largest Lyapunov Exponents, Chaotic Causality perspectives. In this regard, firstly, it is aimed to identify nonlinear pattern of economic growth and coal consumption by BDS test. And secondly, it is purposed to determine chaotic behaviour of the analyzed series by Lyapunov Exponent. Further, chaotic causality is analyzed for this period. The analysis results demonstrate that coal consumption fluctuations have crucial effects on the USA's economic growth in the long term
