Introduction to 'Explorations in Humor Studies: Humor Research Project'
The aim of this chapter is to present the contemporary approaches to humor found in linguistics, culture and literature studies, as well as media studies. The first part of this chapter focuses on the various theories of humor that dominate in contemporary language studies. Next, the problems related to studying humor from the perspective of culture and literature studies are presented. The subsequent section discusses the roles and functions of humor in the mass media. Finally, the chapter provides an overview of the studies included in the present volume
Review of Various Dimensions of Contrastive Studies by Bożena Cetnarowska, Marcin Kuczok and Marcin Zabawa (eds.), Katowice: Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Śląskiego, 2016
The paper constitutes a review of a collection of articles entitled ‘Various Dimensions of Contrastive Studies’ published by Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Śląskiego in 2016 under the editorship of Bożena Cetnarowska, Marcin Kuczok and Marcin Zabawa. Each section of the review contains a critical evaluation of one paper found in the volume. We conclude that although the volume could benefit from more direct discussion pertaining to the methodology of contrastive studies, each of the articles constitutes a significant contribution to its particular domain and is worth-recommending to the reader who desires to keep track of the developments within different areas of the study of language
The information structure of Dative Experiencer psych verbs
This paper presents an analysis of Dative Experiencer verbs in Spanish and Polish as
compared to English within a parametric variation approach that groups languages into
agreement-prominent and discourse-configurational ones. Based on a data elicitation
experiment, we account for the surface word orderings of sentences with Dative Experiencers
in terms of the feature inheritance theory. Assuming discourse features such as
[Top] or [Foc], we argue that English and Polish move Experiencers to TP if they are
not discourse-wise marked; otherwise, they move to CP. Spanish may move DEs to TP
for both reasons: agreement and discourse
Processed measurement data of acceleration of MR fluid-filled cushion gripper on UR3e robot
The dataset is a supplement to the article that will soon be submitted for review. DESCRIPTION:The dataset consists of Absolute Orientation Sensor (BNO055) measurements during the transportation of an object by a UR3e robot. The trajectory of the robot's movement includes lifting the object to a height of about 200 mm, horizontal displacement for a distance of 400 mm, and lowering by 200 mm. The transfer procedure begins with the closing of the jaws and ends with their opening. The procedure is analogous to the one outlined in the following dataset:Białek, Marcin, 2023, "Processed measurement data on grip forces during object transportation by a robot using gripper with a MR fluid-filled cushions", https://doi.org/10.18150/B2KCKC, RepOD.The experiment was conducted for three values of acceleration and velocity of the robot joints. For each such configuration, 5 handling tests were carried out.LICENSE:The data are under Creative Commons License CC BY. It is though recommended to manipulate along with the author to fully understand the outcomes. Cognitive Linguistics in the Year 2024: Motivation in Language
Motivation in language, seen as the influence of a whole range of factors on any dimension of the linguistic unit, is one of the important research areas explored within the cognitive linguistics enterprise. It can be traced at all levels of linguistic organisation, and characterised from all kinds of cognitive perspectives: socio-cultural, embodied, communicative, historical, experiential, psychological, or any other. Hence we encourage submissions from scholars who examine any facet of this issue.
Besides motivation in language, we also invite scholars who explore any other topic in the area of cognitive linguistics and want to share the results of their recent studies
Autoethnography, Storytelling, and Life as Lived: A Conversation Between Marcin Kafar and Carolyn Ellis
This conversation takes place in Warsaw. Carolyn Ellis has come to Poland to accompany Jerry
Rawicki, a Warsaw Ghetto survivor, on his first trip back to Poland since the Holocaust. There
she arranged to meet Marcin Kafar, a scholar in Poland who has spent time with her at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. During this visit, Marcin assists Carolyn with video
recording Jerry’s experiences as they visit Holocaust sites, and Jerry remembers and reflects on
his experience. Afterwards, Marcin converses with Carolyn about autoethnography, storytelling,
and the importance of life in the context of searching for ethos by academics
John Henry Newman-mistrz pióra dwóch wyznań?
The article aims at answering the question whether John Henry Newman (1801-1890), a prolific writer of the Victorian era, can be considered a wordsmith whose writing reached the highest degree of artistic mastery. The paper analyzes the most important genres Newman employed in his Anglican and Catholic periods of life, and subsequently presents the opinions of literary critics regarding the quality and value of his writing. Finally, the author examines the impact of Newmans literary works on culture and art, as well as on literature of both his era and in the centuries to follow. The article aims at answering the question whether John Henry Newman (1801-1890), a prolific writer of the Victorian era, can be considered a wordsmith whose writing reached the highest degree of artistic mastery. The linguistic picture of St. Mary in John Henry Newman’s „Parochial and Plain Sermons”
The aim of the paper is to analyze the linguistic picture of St Mary in John Henry Newman’s „Parochial and Plain Sermons” (1834-1843), published in the Anglican period of his life. The study focuses on identifying such elements of the linguistic picture of St. Mary as her titles and names, events from her life, various roles, attributes, and traits of personality depicted in Newman’s sermons. The aim of the paper is to analyze the linguistic picture of St Mary in John Henry Newman’s „Parochial and Plain Sermons” (1834-1843), published in the Anglican period of his life. PLoS Open Peer Review Corpus
PLoS Open Peer Review CorpusSection for Logic & Cognitive Science, Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, Polish Academy of ScienceGenerated by Ksawery Jasieński under supervision of Marcin Miłkowski (2022)Public Library of Science (PLoS) journals are committed to open peer review idea, but these are voluntary. They are not available for download in a single package, but they are contained in their huge data dump. The data set contains all available peer reviews as of 16 June 2022 (138 papers with reviews). In addition, the corpus contains metadata about particular reviews, author responses, decision letters and paper metadata in the JSON format. The JSON schema files are available in the schema subdirectory in files with self-explanatory names. The original files were not enriched with any linguistic annotation or converted to any format (these are predominantly PDF, TXT, and DOCX files, as uploaded through the MDPI editorial system by reviewers).Additionally, we are making the filter code available, in the review_crawler directory. For PLoS reviews, plos_crawler.py should be used (more notes in the subdirectory). The files are being made available under the terms and conditions of the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/).</p
