    Panel Diskussion: Perspektiven für die Finanzierung der Open Access-Transformation in der Bildungsforschung 2024

    Publizieren in Open Access wird nicht nur zunehmend üblich, sondern wird auch in der Karriereplanung für viele Forschende immer wichtiger. Zudem befürworten die verschiedenen in der Publikationslandschaft der Erziehungswissenschaft, Bildungsforschung und Fachdidaktiken verorteten Akteure Open Access. Doch diese Publikationen müssen auch finanziert werden. Um die Finanzierung von Open Access-Zeitschriften sicherzustellen, existieren unterschiedliche Modelle.     Learning and studying human anatomy is often associated with using rote knowledge. Novice students often memorize terms and structures in the laboratory with little reasoning skills. In attempt to promote application, integration, and critical thinking skills we introduced case based study into the human anatomy course at CSU. Early implementation suggested little change in student’s ability to solve novel problems using simple recall in attempt to answer case study questions. Here, we describe a novel approach using a 5-step method to promote critical thinking. Results suggest students application and integration during the case studies correlated with overall class performance

    This article provides a fresh perspective on the footage shot in the ghetto of Theresienstadt, known under the titles Ghetto Theresienstadt, Theresienstadt 1942 and Theresienstadt. Ein Dokumentarfilm aus dem jüdischen Siedlungsgebiet aka Der Führer schenkt den Juden eine Stadt / The Führer Gives a City to the Jews. Revisiting original Czech, German, and French sources, the article argues, contrary to the general consensus, that the different film shoots from 1942 to 1945 constitute a single film project. N. Drubek suggests corrections to its filmographic data, such as the inclusion of the last Jewish Elder of the ghetto, Benjamin Murmelstein, as co-author of the script.A comparative examination of sources establishes the date, time and place of the first official screening of the film, for delegates of the Committee of the International Red Cross. Revising earlier conceptions on the intended effects and target audiences, the article draws attention to the fact that the film was initiated by the Sicherheitsdienst of the Reich Main Security Office (RSHA) in 1942 and screened at the end of the war to three carefully selected closed audiences. A study of the audience of the premiere on April 6, 1945, allows the reassessment of the question whether the film can be labeled as a propaganda film, or should rather be qualified as a stratagem of the German secret service

    Movement and mobility characterize the biographies and texts of many contemporary authors who were forced to leave their own homelands not only as a result of conflict, war, and repression, but also because of their free existential choices, thus triggering new dynamics that continuously enrich the literary landscape. The work of the writers who paved the way for transcultural relations between East and West Europe is particularly interesting from the transareal perspective (Ottmar Ette) which refers to interconnected areas at an international, national, regional, and local level. This is the context in which the novels of Natascha Wodin – award-winning author for "Sie kam aus Mariupol" (2017, She Came from Mariupol) –, are set. This article will analyse two novels by the author: "Nachtgeschwister" (2009), her tormented autobiographical story, which is also about her comings and goings in the city of Berlin, and "Irgendwo in diesem Dunkel" (2018), the dramatic story of a denied belonging to places and homes. The protagonists and narrators of the two works mentioned above move through and endeavour to take refuge in urban settings, represented by eastern and western places, often described as dark, hidden, and interstitial places. These wandering lives reveal how European history was marked by persecution, violence and dislocations, as well as the painful and hard-fought search for a new and vital freedom of movement, which is also characterized by personal challenge and the ethics of cohabitation

    New challenges for distributed computing at the CMS experiment

    The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments soon step into the next period of run-3 data-taking with an increased data rate and high pileup requiring an excellent working computing infrastructure. In the future High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) data-taking period, the compute, storage and network facilities have to be further extended by large factors and flexible and sophisticated computing models are essential. New techniques of modern state-of-the-art methods in physics analysis and data science, Deep Learning and Big Data tools, are crucial to handle high-dimensional and more complex problems. Beside flexible cloud computing technologies the usage of High Performance Computing (HPC) at the LHC experiments are explored. In this presentation, I will discuss the LHC run-3 and future HL-LHC runs computing technologies and the utilisation of modern physics analysis and data science methods for the increasing and complex demands of large scale scientific computing

    Monte Carlo Simulation data for the CMS experiment are produced using two different software chains. Full Simulation, is a precise tool based on Geant4 detector simulation. The other tool, Fast Simulation, provides a faster but still reliable tool and is based on parametric particle-material interactions. Full Simulation for the LHC Run-3 has shown significant computing performance improvements compared to LHC Run-2. The challenging CMS detector upgrade plan for HL (High Luminosity)-LHC requires extra efforts due to the increased luminosity and a new and more complex detector geometry. Full Simulation plans to meet the requirements for HL-LHC, which includes continuous migration to newer versions of Geant4 as well as further physics improvements. In Fast Simulation, a more efficient treatment of the generator particles during their propagation through the detectors was achieved. The increasing use of machine learning (ML) techniques in simulation leads to an enhanced description of physics processes and detector responses, which reduces the need for computing capacity. This contribution reports the current Full and Fast Simulation performance innovations and developments to fulfill the significant higher Monte Carlo Simulation demands for HL-LHC. ML software tools already in use and new developments for Full and Fast Simulation and other promising simulation tools such as FlashSim are introduced

    Accelerating Full and Fast Simulation of the CMS Experiment

    Monte Carlo Simulation data for the CMS experiment can be produced using two software tools. The first, the Full Simulation (FullSim), is a more precise tool based on Geant4 detector simulation. The second, the Fast Simulation, provides a faster but still reliable tool and is based on parametric particle-material interactions. FullSim for the LHC Run-3 shows significant computing performance improvements compared to LHC Run-2. The major modifications of FullSim are the migration from Geant4 version 10.4.3 to 10.7.2, the new software package DD4hep for geometry description, the migration from CentOS7 to the new software platform AlmaLinux8 and using the LTO (Link time optimization) build flag. The challenging CMS detector upgrade plan for HL (High Luminosity)-LHC requires extra efforts due to the increased luminosity and the new and complex detector geometry. FullSim plans to meet the requirements for HL-LHC, which includes continues migration to newer versions of Geant4, the current one is 11.1.2, as well as physics improvements including machine learning (ML) techniques to reduce compute capacity needs. Major progresses of Fast Simulation are reached by a more efficient treatment of the generator particles as they propagate through the detectors. Recent developments include the implementation of an increasing more accurate shower generation, improved track finding and tuning of physics processes. This contribution reports the current Full and Fast Simulation performance innovations and further plans to fulfill the significant higher Monte Carlo Simulation demands in LHC Run-3 and for HL-LHC. Very promising software developments using ML for higher accuracy (Refinement Fast Simulation) and speed up (FlashSim) for the simulation run will be explained

    Ten Simple Rules for Being a Co-author on a Many-Author Non-Empirical Paper

    Many-author non-empirical papers include “how to” articles, recommendations or consensus statements, roadmaps for future research, catalogs of ideas, or calls to action. These papers benefit the research community and broader academic ecosystem by addressing unmet needs or introducing new perspectives and approaches. Large, diverse authorship teams that examine an issue from many different perspectives can create valuable resources that individual co-authors could not develop independently, or in smaller groups. Realizing the potential of many-author non-empirical papers, however, requires very different strategies than researchers would typically use to write papers with fewer authors. A core team of lead writers typically work together to lead the content generation and writing processes, while many co-authors collaboratively create content and provide feedback on outlines and drafts. Challenges for co-authors may include learning to write a different type of paper, adapting to high volume feedback, and understanding the very diverse perspectives shared by fellow co-authors. This paper outlines ten simple rules for being a co-author on a many-author non-empirical paper. Although the rules were developed for papers with at least 30 authors, some rules may be useful for many-author research papers, or for non-empirical papers with fewer authors. Co-authors may also want to consult our companion paper on ten simple rules for leading a many-author non-empirical paper, as understanding the challenges faced by lead writers will help co-authors to contribute more efficiently and effectively

    Identitäts- und Erinnerungsarbeit in Natascha Wodins Sie kam aus Mariupol (2017) und Irgendwo in diesem Dunkel (2018) – Eine Analyse.

    Den tyske forfatteren Natascha Wodin har russisk-ukrainsk opphav og beskriver i sine selvbiografiske verk Sie kam aus Mariupol (2017) og Irgendwo in diesem Dunkel (2018) den vanskelige oppveksten som barn av russiske tvangsarbeidere i Tyskland og en omfattende søken etter den ukjente familiehistorien. Til sammen utgjør disse bøkene et komplekst identitets- og minnearbeid, og jeg arbeider med et kontruksjonsperspektiv på den litterære teksten, hvor jeg ser på litteraturen som en del av den kulturelle og sosiologiske dynamikken. I dette arbeidet undersøker jeg hvordan Wodin fremstiller søket etter svar angående moren og til dels farens fortid, gjennom fortellerens voksne og barnlige perspektiv. Analysen gjennomføres som en formbevisst nærlesning av bøkene, med en tekstlig tolkning av Wodins pågående selvfortolkning og identitetsforståelse. For å belyse identitetstematikken benytter jeg meg av begreper og forståelsesmåter fra blant annet Jean Phinneys identitetsteori, og jeg setter spesielt søkelys på hvordan Wodin gjennom det tekstlige fremstiller sin egen oppfatning og utvikling av den etniske og nasjonale identiteten. Fra et erindringsperspektiv undersøker jeg hvordan Wodin skriver tvangsarbeidernes historie gjennom sin egen familiehistorie, og ser med hensikt til dette spesielt på Wodins fremstilling av historisk trauma som strekker seg over generasjoner gjennom de familiære relasjonsbåndene.The German author Natascha Wodin has Russian-Ukrainian origins and describes the difficult upbringing as a child of Russian forced laborers in Germany in her autobiographical works Sie kam aus Mariupol (2017) and Irgendwo in diesem Dunkel (2018). Together, these works make up a complex identity- and memory work, and I apply a constructive perspective on the literary text, where I look at the literature as part of the cultural and sociological dynamics. In this work, I examine how Wodin presents the search for answers regarding the mother and partly the father's past, through the narrators perspective as adult and child. The analysis is conducted as a form-conscious close reading of the books, with a textual interpretation of Wodin's ongoing self-interpretation and understanding of identity. To shed light on the issue of identity, I use concepts and ways of understanding from Jean Phinney's identity theory, and I place special focus on how Wodin through the text presents her own perception and development of the ethnic and national identity. From a memory perspective, I examine how Wodin writes the history of forced laborers through her own family history and look in particular at Wodin's portrayal of historical trauma that spans through generations through the family ties
