Invariant subspaces of the Lawrence-Krammer representation

No full text
The Lawrence-Krammer representation was used in 2000 to show the linearity of the braid group. The problem had remained open for many years. The fact that the Lawrence-Krammer representation of the braid group is reducible for some complex values of its two parameters is now known, as well as the complete description of these values. It is also known that when the representation is reducible, the action on a proper invariant subspace is an Iwahori-Hecke algebra action. In this paper, we prove a theorem of classification for the invariant subspaces of the Lawrence-Krammer space. We classify the invariant subspaces in terms of Specht modules. We fully describe them in terms of dimension and spanning vectors in the Lawrence-Krammer space

Lawrence-Krammer-Bigelow representations and dual Garside length of braids

We show that the span of the variable qq in the Lawrence-Krammer-Bigelow representation matrix of a braid is equal to the twice of the dual Garside length of the braid, as was conjectured by Krammer. Our proof is close in spirit to Bigelow's geometric approach. The key observation is that the dual Garside length of a braid can be read off a certain labeling of its curve diagram

Entrenchment, wealth, power, and the constitution of democratic societies by Paul Starr

Entrenchment, Wealth, Power, and the Constitution of Democratic Societies, by Paul Starr, New Haven, CT: Yale University Press. 2019. 280 pages, hardcover. Why should we, as Management scholars and educators, care about a book on political diagnosis? The answer is twofold. First, the calibre of the author (Paul Starr), an awardee of both Bancroft and Pulitzer Prizes, a former policy advisor to the Clinton administration, and the author of The Transformation of American Medicine (1982), a book with a profound impact on American policy circles. Second, the core concept (entrenchment) of the book, and its potential to advance the process of institutional development, and the ways in which we can reform and change our institutions to better meet the current and pressing needs of the many, rather than preserve the unequal privileges of a few. In light of the geopolitical, social, and environmental pressures we see currently rising across the world (George, Howard-Grenville, Joshi & Tihanyi, 2016; Howard-Grenville, Buckle, Hoskins & George, 2014) there is no better time to examine whether and how we can address some of these grand challenges by reforming and improving our institutions

Parameters for which the Lawrence–Krammer representation is reducible

No full text
AbstractWe show that the representation, introduced by Lawrence and Krammer to show the linearity of the braid group, is generically irreducible. However, for some values of its two parameters when these are specialized to complex numbers, it becomes reducible. We construct a representation of degree n(n−1)2 of the BMW algebra of type An−1. As a representation of the braid group on n strands, it is equivalent to the Lawrence–Krammer representation where the two parameters of the BMW algebra are related to those appearing in the Lawrence–Krammer representation. We give the values of the parameters for which the representation is reducible and give the proper invariant subspaces in some cases. We use this representation to show that for these special values of the parameters, the BMW algebra of type An−1 is not semisimple

A double-edged sword? The antipodal effects of institutional distance on partner selection in cross-border alliances

No full text
Careful partner selection is a prerequisite for successful alliances. I posit that institutional distance will influence partner selection in international technological alliances negatively for exploitation, and positively for exploration alliances. A longitudinal dataset of firms in the global tire industry confirms firms’ preference for similar cognitive, normative, and regulatory partners in exploitation alliances, and a preference for dissimilar partners in exploration alliances. However, the latter is true for differences across the regulative and cognitive pillars rather than for normative differences. These findings attest to the antipodal role of institutional differences in the selection of prospective partners for cross-border technological alliances
