Tourist development impacts on the spatial transformation of the Greek islands. The case study of Kos insular area

    No full text
The paper context is dealing with the changes in the spatial structure, within small island areas of Greece, caused by the rabbit tourist development of the last thirty years. In the early seventies, tourism was a new direction for the island rural communities and economies, having a complicated and multileveled spatial organization, knowing that it involves effectively: 'international', 'national', 'territorial' and 'local' level, over the island space, which was mostly believed as a 'closed' system ('closed' local society, local economy etc). In these terms tourism has become today the main factor of regional and local growth, affecting to: the evolution and agglomeration of the population, the function of the local labour market and the distribution of labour, land uses and the location of services and central activities, the role of small towns and settlements and their 'connectivity' level with 'autonomous' (how much?) tourist areas. We examine -as a case study- the above matters in a 'fully' tourist developed area of the greek islands space: Kos and Nisyros spatial unity, located in South Aegean (totally about 30,000 resident population and 32,000 hotel beds in 2000). Our research was based in empirical/ qualitative information but also in secondary/ quantitative data, comparatively presented. At the beginning we attempt to build a 'scenario' describing the process of the development. We detect the development phases by checking the spread sequence of the tourist units (and activities) compared with the existing spatial structure of the island/ rural case study area ('how'). At the same time we try to explain and connect this process with the changes within the local economy, the local community and the basic 'rules' of the land market ('why'). This 'scenario' is used as a framework for (the) following specific investigations referring to: -the differentiated evolution of the population in each island town/ settlement, due to a number of reasons related directly to the agglomeration of the tourist activities, -the changes in the location and the categories of labour and its increasing mobility, as a result of the special characteristics of tourism, -the role of the transportations and the spatial forms of the retail sector in a tourist environment, -the functional relations and the networking between a tourist area and a small town/ rural settlement, investigating whether the tourist areas are functionally embodied with the surrounding settlements. Finally the paper comes to some schematic types of spatial relations according to the size of each settlement and the spatial relations it develops in general. These spatial types contain the main conclusions of the above analysis and they describe how the area is transformed and reshaped under the changing developing procedures.

Uporabili smo kvantitativno metodologijo in deskriptivno metodo dela. Podatke za raziskovalni del diplomskega dela smo zbrali s pomočjo anonimne ankete z vprašanji zaprtega in odprtega tipa. Vprašanja za prepoznavanje osveščenosti žensk glede zdravljenja in preprečevanja osteoporoze smo povzeli in priredili na podlagi vprašalnika FOOQ (Facts on Osteoporosis Quiz) avtorice Ailingerjeve s sodelavci. Rezultati raziskave so pokazali srednjo osveščenost žensk o osteoporozi. Osveščenost žensk o osteoporozi ni zadostna in v prihodnje bo potrebno dati veliko poudarka zdravstveno vzgojnemu delu in promociji zdravja. Številne ženske nimajo jasnega razumevanja in znanje, ki ga imajo o osteoporozi nasploh ni povezano z njihovim vedenjem in življenjskim slogom. Osteoporosis is a bone disease that is characterized by a decrease in bone hardness and as such can lead to an increased risk of fracture. It is the most widespread metabolic bone disease and is becoming one of the major global health and socio-economic problems. The health nurse has a major and substantial role in raising the awareness and informing women at all three levels of health protection. The purpose of the diploma thesis is to describe and present the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in women, and based on research to establish the awareness of women in recognizing and treating osteoporosis. We have used quantitative methodology and descriptive work method. The data for the research part of the diploma thesis was collected by means of an anonymous questionnaire using closed and open-type questions. The questions for identifying women\u27s awareness with respect to the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis were derived from the FOOQ (Facts on Osteoporosis Quiz) questionnaire by the author Ailinger and co-authors. Results of the research have shown that women have average knowledge of osteoporosis. The mean score achieved in our research was 47,3 %. Respondents got the majority of information on osteoporosis from media, one third, i.e. 28,3 % obtained information from their personal physician. Only 2,7 % of all respondents obtained information on osteoporosis from health nurses. Knowledge of women of osteoporosis is insufficient, therefore a lot of work needs to be done in future in the area of health education and health promotion. Numerous women have no clear understanding, and the knowledge they have of osteoporosis is in no way related to their behaviour and lifestyle. With a healthy lifestyle we can influence the maximum bone mass, slow down its age-related decrease, and thus prevent the occurrence of the disease. Women that are better informed and know more about the disease have a bigger interest in their health. Awareness of women is of huge importance and is a great incentive for maintaining health. This will ensure better quality of life

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Solvable groups

    No full text
In this BSc thesis we consider the concept of solvable groups. It turns out that this concept is one of the most important ones in group theory, since these groups in a sense correspond to groups that can be constructed from cyclic groups of prime order. Before introducing the concept of solvable groups we make a short review of some notions and results in group theory. We then define the concept of (sub)normal series and illustrate it with a few examples. We also define the concepts of composition series and commutator series. We then finally introduce the concept of solvable groups. We present a criterion of when a finite group is solvable. We give examples of solvable and nonsolvable groups and present some other results related to the concept of solvable groups

Jakoba in sv. Valentina. Temu sledi seznanitev z nastankom in vrstami matičnih knjig na splošno. Osrednji del diplomskega dela zajema predstavitev žusemskih matic in njihova transliteracija. Podatki pridobljeni iz matičnih knjig so analizirani grafično in tekstovno. V zadnjem delu diplomskega dela se nahajajo sklepne ugotovitve s seznamom uporabljenih virov in literature. In the diploma paper entitled The Surnames and Names in the Registers of Parish Žusem between 1755 to 1800, firstly the area of Žusem with its historical locations from the late antiquity by the end of the 18th century and the Žusem parish with Saint James and Saint Valentine churches were presented. Then, the origin and different kinds of registers were introduced. The central part of the diploma paper encompassed the presentation of Žusem registers and their transliteration. The data acquired from the registers were analysed both graphically and textually. In the final part, conclusions and a list of used sources and literature were gathered
