    On Farm Demonstration of Recently Adapted Irish Potato (Solanum tuberosum) in Highlands of Guji Zone

    The activity was conducted in Bore and Ana Sora district in 2015-2017 production season to evaluate productivity and profitability of improved potato variety with standard check (Gudane variety) under farmers’ condition and to build farmers’ knowledge and skill of production and management of the improved potato variety. From all Irish Potato producing Peasant Associations (PAs), six PAs were selected based on their Irish Potato production potential. From each PA, one FRG having 15 members was established. The selections of participating farmers were carried out by close collaboration with agricultural district offices, DAs, SMSs, opinion leaders, and PA leaders. Training was given for farmers, development agents and experts. Exchange visit also performed to share experience of experimental farmers’ management practices conducted by FRG work. Data was collected from 18 experimental farmers by using interaction with FRG members. The collected data was analyzed by descriptive statistics and Net farm income was used to estimate the profitability of Irish potato. Accordingly, the average yield of Belete and Gudane demonstrated was 355 Qt/ha and 269 Qt/ha respectively. The result of samples t-test stated there was significant difference in yield between Belete and Gudane variety. Pairwise ranking showed disease resistance trait was considered to be the most trait preferred by farmers. The production of Belete variety in highlands of Guji Zone was profit with the net farm income of 28182.64 Birr/ha and 14158.34 Birr/ha in Bore and Ana Sora district respectively. Despite Belete variety has higher yield and returns the variety has lower acceptance than Gudane since Gudane was moderately disease resistant, high market demand and good taste. Farmers should use the existing variety (Gudane) in their potato production and used effective chemicals in maintaining disseminated variety.     Demonstration of Improved Teff Varieties at Selected Midland Districts of Guji Zone

    The activity was conducted for two consecutive years, 2014 and 2015/16 at Adola Rede and Ana Sora district to evaluate the performance of improved tef varieties along with management practices under farmers’ circumstances, to raise farmers’ knowledge and skill on improved tef production and management practices. Peasant association were selected with respective agricultural offices based potentiality of the area in teff production. Training was given for farmers, Development Agents and experts on teff production and recommended packages of teff. 0.3kg of teff and DAP was used for the experiment. The two improved teff varieties demonstrated was Tseday and Boset against the local varieties. Participating farmers were capacitated through training, follow up, exchange visits and mini field days. The two improved Tef varieties (Tseday and Boset) delivered as demonstration showed good in yield and reaction to disease while the locally diffused varieties were lower in yield from time to time and affected by disease.  Farmers in the area should use Tseday and Boset variety in order to increase their teff production and enhance their livelihood.     Pre-scaling up of improved faba bean technologies in the highland districts of Guji Zone, Oromia regional state, Ethiopia

    Pre scaling up of Gebelcho and Walki was conducted in the highland districts of Guji Zone during 2014/15-2015/16 year to increase farmers’ capacity in production and management practices of faba bean. Two kebeles from each two districts namely Bore and Ana Sora were selected purposively based on their potential for faba bean production. From each kebele nine farmers were selected for the activity making it a total of 72 farmers for the two years. Depending on the capacity of farmers 50kg-100kg of faba bean was given for the selected farmers. Around 24.5ha was covered by the crop during the production years. Training was also given for participating farmers and others on production packages of faba bean. Exchange visits and mini field days were arranged for further promotion. The yield gained from the varieties was 33.76qt/ha and 27qt/ha from Gebelcho and Walki respectively. Both varieties were found to be acceptable during field days by farmers due to their disease tolerant capacity. Thus, highland farmers are recommended to use Gebelcho and Walki varieties to increase faba bean production and generate income for their livelihood. Further dissemination of faba bean is expected from seed multipliers in producing quality seed and addressing potential areas

    Participatory evaluation and selection of improved haricot bean varieties at liben district, lowland agro ecology of Guji zone, Oromia regional state, Ethiopia

    The activity was conducted in Liben district to evaluate the yield performance of improved haricot bean varieties. 25 pastorals and agro pastorals were selected from Measa kebele with collaboration of Liben Pastoral and Agro Pastoral Office, Zonal Mobile Supporting Team and kebele leaders. The 25 pastoral and agro pastorals were grouped into one PAPRG. Then 25 PAPRG members were regrouped into three experimental pastorals and agro pastoralists. Training were given for PAPRG members. Exchange visit was arranged to share experience on the work each PAPRG. Haramaya, Awasa Dume, Ebado varieties were evaluated with standard check variety. Descriptive statistics and direct matrix ranking was used to analysis the data. Local variety give the highest yield (31kg/ha). PAPRG criteria for haricot bean production was market demand, color, disease/insect reaction, drought resistance. Accordingly, Ebado variety was preferred by PAPRGs based on marketability while Local check and Awasa Dube were selected as first and second respectively based on drought resistance, number of pod/plant, higher yield and resistance to insects. Haramaya variety was susceptible to insects. Pastoralists and agro pastoralists should use Ebado variety to increase their income and local variety for household consumption

    Pre-Extension Demonstration of Shiro Type Field Pea Technologies in the Highlands of Guji Zone, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia

    For improvement of field pea production, agricultural research centers have released many varieties. However, productivity of field pea is low due to insufficient demonstration of released and adapted varieties at farmers’ level. Hence, demonstration of released and improved varieties is the key approval for large scale production of field pea. Therefore, this experiment was exhibited at three highlands to estimate profitability and evaluate the yield of shiro kind field pea varieties. The Bilalo variety was demonstrated with local varieties by 12 farmers during the year 2022. Yield and costs of production were collected. The data was analyzed through cost benefit analysis and descriptive statistics. The result indicated that the Bilalo variety gave a better yield (25.92 Qt/ha) compared to the local variety (18.33 Qt/ha). Cost benefit analysis indicated that the Bilalo variety gave better returns (108672 ETB/ha) compared to the local variety (54022 ETB/ha). Farmers prefer the Bilalo variety because it provides a higher harvest, is more disease tolerant and has high market value over the local variety. The use of the improved shiro field pea variety is significant for yield increment and profit growth. Thus, the Bilalo variety should be used for shiro type field pea production in highland areas. Additional research is desirable to promote the Bilalo variety through scaling up in the highland and similar agro-ecologies of the Guji zone

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
