Forensic Analysis of Levee Failures: The Breitenhagen Case
No full textForensic analysis of past failures is valuable to improve our understanding of levee behavior. In this article a new systematic approach of forensic analysis for levee failures is proposed and applied to the Breitenhagen levee breach that occurred along the river Saale in Germany in 2013. The purpose of this study is to identify the cause of the breach based on the proposed approach, even though limited data is available. Based on the information prior, during and after the breach of the levee, a slope stability model is developed for the entire event. First, results from this model are obtained based on the expected values of the uncertain parameters and the best estimates of the situation. Uncertainty of the model is included in the calculation subsequently by defining possible failure scenarios. The most likely failure scenarios are derived from the data and included into the model so that it is possible to eliminate or validate all possible causes by means of a sensitivity calculation. It is concluded that the levee breach is likely caused by locally weak soil conditions, unexpected high water pressures due to a connection between a pond and the aquifer and unexpected saturation of the levee. No full textThe use of automobiles is increasing in the Philippines due to the rising incomes of the people and is evident in the increasing number of car sales, which shows that the automotive industry is indeed profitable. Automotive films or tint, being one of the major car accessories that people usually install, provides many benefits such as privacy, security, heat protection and safety. V-KOOL Philippines took the initiative to re-introduce V-KOOL\u27s spectrally-selective technology back in 2011 as it saw the need for the product here in the country. Despite being introduced by the last distributor years ago, the product still lacks awareness in the market. Acknowledging the potential of V-KOOL\u27s products that surpasses the industry standards for automotive films, the group proposed to create a product marketing plan to increase both brand awareness and sales. This will be executed starting January 2013. The marketing plan aims to change its target market from a broad scope to a narrower market, which are young urban professionals, ages 28-35, and middle-aged adults, ages 40-50. Both of these markets belong to the socio-economic class ABC1 that was determined based on the primary and secondary data gathered by the researchers.
Objectives of the marketing plan are to increase awareness among the new target market that there are several variants of V-KOOL and to focus V-KOOL\u27s marketing efforts towards them, that would eventually lead to sales. With this being said, the goals or the first year are 1) To make 50% of the primary target and 15% of the secondary market aware of the four variants by the end of 2013, 2) To expand the distribution of V-KOOL products by tapping into the aftermarket area of Makati, Paranaque and Muntinlupa, 3) To increase product sales of V-KOOL by 30% by the end 2013

No full textThe author shares his reflections on state of art in housing and urban planning, deficiencies, expectations and possibilities in the Sahel region of Africa. He notices, that the housing problem in Africa is one of the challenges, which should be solved in order to recover life dignity of African people and secure their rights to traditional family life in acceptable conditions. The paper describes the studies on the typical dispersed urban structures and the need to foster this type of settlement structure and proposals of introduction of new on light steel frame housing system in the area of Sahel, combining the traditional way of building houses with modern technology. The particularly analysed case, is the housing problem in the Republic of Chad. The author presents the basic discussion on this topic and his architectural proposals. Unfortunately, the gap between the needs and the financial feasibility of housing construction in this area, makes this project already at the starting point extremely difficult to be realized without external subventions.Problem mieszkaniowy w Afryce jest jednym z wyzwań, które należy rozwiązać, aby Afrykanie mogli odzyskać godność życiową i zabezpieczyć swoje prawa do tradycyjnego życia rodzinnego w akceptowalnych warunkach. W artykule opisano badania nad typowymi rozproszonymi strukturami miejskimi i potrzebą wspierania tego typu struktur osadniczych oraz propozycji wprowadzenia nowego systemu konstrukcji domów, opartym na lekkim szkielecie stalowym, łączącym tradycyjny sposób budowania domów z nowoczesną technologią. Przypadkiem szczególnie analizowanym jest problem mieszkaniowy w Republice Czadu. Autor przedstawia podstawową dyskusję na ten temat i swoje propozycje architektoniczne. Niestety luka między potrzebami mieszkaniowymi w Czadzie a finansową wykonalnością budownictwa mieszkaniowego w tym obszarze sprawia, że projekt ten, już w punkcie wyjścia, jest niezwykle trudny do realizacji bez uzyskania zewnętrznych dotacji
A Bayesian hindcasting method of levee failures applied to the Breitenhagen slope failure
No full textHindcasting of past levee failures enhances insights in the performance and vulnerability of levees. The scarcity of field evidence makes identifying the cause(s) of failure difficult. Under these circumstances, multiple scenarios and model choices are possible to characterise and to model the failure. This paper shows how probabilistic Bayesian techniques advance the procedure of hindcasting of levee failures. In the developed approach, a-priori levee information, and failure observations are systematically taken into account to determine the most likely scenario and the most representative model choices to characterise the failure most accurately. Observations, such as the slip surface, are taken into account in the probability estimates. The levee failure near Breitenhagen, Germany (2013) is used as a case study. The levee failed during river floods due the instability of the landside slope. The levee failure was most likely triggered by locally weak soil conditions and unexpected high water pressures due a connection between a pond on the riverside of the levee and the aquifer. These conditions were likely caused by the occurrence of a previous breach at this location. The approach developed in this paper is expected to support a more systematic and objective method of analysis of other levee failures
