    Analysis of invasion scenarios of hedgehogs in New Zealand using ABC modeling

    European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) were introduced to the New Zealand during the end of the 19th century. According to the historical and questionnaire data, first hedgehogs probably settled in the south of the South island (in Dunedin) and after that they also colonized the North island. Today’s population sizes are stable and hedgehogs are considered as pests which need to be reduced. We confirmed membership of New Zealand hedgehogs to the Great Britain lineage (which originates in Iberian ice age refuge) by using mtDNA (D-loop). 22 individuals from the source population and 190 individuals from 5 populations in the New Zealand were analyzed at 10 microsatellite loci. Analysis in Powsim showed that number of used individuals and microsatellite loci was sufficient to detect signal in population structure. Isolation By Distance wasn’t significant. Analysis in Structure supported division into four clusters which were used as basic operational units for ABC analyses. We created a set of scenario of invasion for testing in DIYABC. We found signal which is showing different way of invasion than supposed from historical data – from North Island to the South island. These results are demonstrating advantages of molecular markers usage and modern methods of population genetics in detail analysis of demographically expanding population

    Analýza invazních scénářů ježků na Novém Zélandu pomocí ABC modelování. Ježek západní (Erinaceus europaeus) byl na Nový Zéland introdukován během konce 19. století. Podle historických záznamů a dotazníkových dat měli být první jedinci vysazeni na jihu jižního ostrova (Dunedin), odkud se dostali na počátku 20. století až na severní ostrov. Dnes je populační velikost stabilní a v některých oblastech se provádí umělá redukce stavů. V naší práci jsme pomocí mtDNA potvrdili příslušnost novozélandské populace k linii pocházející z Velké Británie. Dále bylo pomocí 10 mikrosatelitových lokusů zanalyzováno 22 jedinců ze zakladatelské populace a 190 z pěti populací Nového Zélandu. Podle analýzy v programu Powsim byl počet jedinců i lokusů dostatečný k nalezení signálu v populační struktuře. Nebyla potvrzena isolation by distance. Program Structure podpořil rozdělení na 4 populace, které byly použity jako základní jednotky pro ABC analýzy. Program DIY ABC umožňuje testování a priori definovaných scénářů. Pro účel této studie byla vytvořena sada možných průběhů invaze. V datech byl nalezen signál, který prokázal obrácený směr šíření, než jaký byl zjištěn pomocí historických dat a to směrem ze severního ostrova na ostrov jižní. Výsledky demonstrují výhody molekulárních markerů a moderních postupů populační genetiky při podrobné analýze demografické historie expandující populace

    In recent studies, it has been proposed to classify the fixed verb combination [NPan] [seinfin] [Vact inf] (e.g., Hans ist essen) in German as the progressive aspect form known as absentive. The function of expressing an ongoing action in the absence of the person encoded in the subject role has been posited as an universal grammatical category. In Italian it takes the form [NPan][essere fin] [a] [Vact inf] as in Gianni è a mangiare (de Groot 2000, 693). This paper aims to capture these complex verbal constructions in corpora of spoken German (FOLK) and Italian (VoLIP), analyze their structure, and describe their pragmatic functions in specific interactions on the theoretical basis of (interactional) construction grammar. This also involves establishing a connection with other fixed grammatical and lexical verb combinations, namely the progressive forms in German ([NPan] [sein fin] [am] [Vinf]) and Italian ([NP] [stare fin] [Vger]). Finally, the similarities and differences of this construction in German and Italian are contrastively highlighted, with a particular focus on the close connection between locative, temporal, and aspectual meanings of this construction, as identified through corpus evidence.In jüngsten Untersuchungen wurde vorgeschlagen, die feste Verbverbindung [NPbel] [seinfin]1 [Handlungsverbinf.] (wie in: Hans ist essen) für die deutsche Sprache als die progressive Aspektform Absentiv zu klassifizieren. Die Funktion, eine Handlung im Verlauf bei gleichzei tiger Abwesenheit der in der Subjektrolle kodierten Person auszudrücken, wurde dabei als eine universelle grammatikalische Kategorie postuliert. Im Italienischen erscheint diese Kategorie in der Form [NPan ] [esserefin ] [a] [verbo d’azione inf] wie in Gianni è a mangiare (de Groot 2000, 693). Ziel des Beitrages ist es, diese komplexen Verbalkonstruktionen in Korpora gesprochener Sprache des Deutschen (FOLK) und des Italienischen (VoLIP) konkret zu erfassen, in ihrer Struktur zu analysieren und ihre pragmatischen Funktionen in konkreten Interaktionen auf der theoretischen Grundlage der (interaktionalen) Konstruktionsgrammatik zu beschreiben. Dabei muss zugleich auch der Zusammenhang zu anderen festen grammatikalischen und lexikalischen Verbverbindungen hergestellt werden, so zum Progressiv der deutschen ([NPbel] [seinfin ] [am] [Vinf]) und der italienischen Sprache ([NP] [starefin ] [Vger]). Abschließend werden Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede dieser Konstruktion im Deutschen und Italienischen kontrastiv herausgearbeitet, wobei aufgrund der anhand der Korpusbelege festgestellten pragmatischen Funktionen die enge Verbindung zwischen lokativen, temporalen und aspektuellen Bedeutungen dieser Konstruktion besonders betrachtet wird

    Infection dynamics of Cichlidogyrus tilapiae and C. sclerosus (Monogenea, Ancyrocephalinae) in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) from Uganda.

    The infection dynamics of the gill monogeneans Cichlidogyrus tilapiae and C. sclerosus on Oreochromis niloticus with respect to habitat type (reservoir, stream, ponds and cages), host sex, size and seasons was determined between January and November 2008. During the study period, 45.2% of the 650 fish examined were infected with Cichlidogyrus spp. The infected hosts harboured an average of 8.6 ± 3.4 parasites/fish. Across habitat types, the proportion of infected fish was not statistically different. In contrast, the number of parasites recorded on infected fish from different habitat types differed significantly. The highest parasite number was recorded in reservoir-dwelling fish and lowest in stream-dwelling hosts. Concerning sex, more female O. niloticus were infected and harboured a high number of parasites than male and sexually undifferentiated fish. A weak negative relationship was found between rainfall and monthly parasite infections. However, a higher number of parasites and proportion of infected hosts were found during dry than in wet seasons, except in ponds. Results of this study show that differential exposure due to changes in fish behaviour associated with habitat modification and sex may account for the infection difference across the sampled sites. Meanwhile, rainfall and the associated hydrological events are important factors regulating monogenean infections in tropical aquatic environments. The continuous presence of Cichlidogyrus spp. in fish provides evidence of possible parasite outbreaks, indicating the application of biosecurity measures as crucial for the success of intensive fish farming

    Immunohistochemistry, ultrastructure and pathology of gills of Abramis brama from the lake Mondsee, Austria, infected with Ergasilus sieboldi (Copepoda)

    Immunohistochemical, ultrastructural and pathological studies were carried out on thegills of bream Abramis brama (L.) from Lake Mondsee, Austria, that were naturally infected withErgasilus sieboldi Nordmann, 1832. Of a total of 14 specimens of bream examined, the gills of 7 (50%)were parasitized with this copepod and the intensity of infection ranged from 1 to 23 crustaceans perhost. Histopathological investigations of infected gill showed extensive tissue damage due to attachmentand feeding of the crustacean. Parasites attached close to the base of filaments near the gillarch. Pressure exerted by the ectoparasite attached to the lateral margin of the gill filaments inducedatrophy of the secondary lamellae. Tissue reactions included hyperplasia and mucous cell proliferationof the respiratory epithelium. Mucous cells displayed an intense immunohistochemical reactivitywith the anti-nitric oxide synthase antibody. In parasitized primary and secondary lamellae, a highnumber of eosinophilic granular cells and rodlet cells were noticed. Rodlet cells represent an inflammatorycell type closely linked to other piscine inflammatory cells. Presence of a high number ofinflammatory cells at the site of E. sieboldi attachment is related to intense host cellular reaction.[...

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
