Biomimicry-Gradient-Based Algorithm as Applied to Photonic Devices Design: Inverse Design of Flat Plasmonic Metalenses

The classical adjoint-based topology optimization (TO) method, based on the use of a random continuous dielectric function as design variable distribution is known to be one of the timely efficient and fast optimization methods enable a very high performance functional optical devices. It relies on the computation of the gradient of a figure of merit (FOM) with respect to the design parameters. The gradient of the figure of merit (FOM) may then be used to update the design vector element in several senarios. One of the most common use scenario consists of updating simultaneously all the design parameter vector elements. In a linear problem case involving a simply convex FOM-function shape, using the gradient information, it is a relatively easy to reach an optimal solution. In the case of constrained and non linear problems stated in an infinite and indeterminate design space, the conventional TO, a local optimizer, may require multiple restarts, with multiple initial points and multiple runs. The algorithm strongly depends on the initial conditions. In this paper, we report a global-like optimizer inspired by a wolf pack hunting, enabling efficient design of metasurfaces through their geometrical parameters. We apply the method to design a non periodic metasurface consisting of plasmonic metalenses, enabling a high energy flow focusing on a well-defined 2D focus spot. Numerical results show that the proposed inverse design method has a low sensitivity to initial conditions. In our design method of metalens, we optimize the full micro device at once, and demonstrate that the proposed method may provide both symmetric and more creative unexpected asymmetric on-axis metalenses even though under a normal illumination

Augmented Harris Hawks Optimizer with Gradient-Based-Like Optimization: Inverse Design of All-Dielectric Meta-Gratings

In this paper, we introduce a new hybrid optimization method for the inverse design of metasurfaces, which combines the original Harris hawks optimizer (HHO) with a gradient-based optimization method. The HHO is a population-based algorithm that mimics the hunting process of hawks tracking prey. The hunting strategy is divided into two phases: exploration and exploitation. However, the original HHO algorithm performs poorly in the exploitation phase and may get trapped and stagnate in a basin of local optima. To improve the algorithm, we propose pre-selecting better initial candidates obtained from a gradient-based-like (GBL) optimization method. The main drawback of the GBL optimization method is its strong dependence on initial conditions. However, like any gradient-based method, GBL has the advantage of broadly and efficiently spanning the design space at the cost of computation time. By leveraging the strengths of both methods, namely GBL optimization and HHO, we show that the proposed hybrid approach, denoted as GBL–HHO, is an optimal scenario for efficiently targeting a class of unseen good global optimal solutions. We apply the proposed method to design all-dielectric meta-gratings that deflect incident waves into a given transmission angle. The numerical results demonstrate that our scenario outperforms the original HHO

The scatterometry requires calculating the optical response of periodic structures. Among the numerical methods for calculating electromagnetic diffraction by gratings, the most commonly used is the Fourier Modal Method (FMM). This seems to be ineffective for characterizing structures very isolated or very dense and can even fail. The objective of this thesis is to overcome the limitations of the FMM. We remain within the framework of modal methods but we are exploring new ways of using different bases of development that do not have the drawbacks of Fourier bases. First, we introduced the B-spline functions which are the first step towards multi-resolution analysis with wavelet splines. We formulated the problem of diffraction by a 1D grating as an eigenvalue problem that we solved numerically using the Galerkin method. We studied in detail the importance of the discretization compared to the discontinuities of permittivity function. Then we introduced the wavelet analysis at multiple levels of detail for the diffraction problem. The thesis contains a diversity of numerical examples concerning dielectric and metal gratings. We have carefully compared the convergence of our methods with that of other methods, especially with the FMM. We showed that multiresolution analysis can deal with cases where the FMM fails

Intuitively, when the light interacts with a dielectric whose size is equal to a few wavelengths, a diffusion phenomenon is observable. But in 2004, a near-field focusing, weakly divergent with the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) that could be smaller than the wavelength is observed. So, this high-intensity beam can overtake the classical diffraction limit. This finding of considerable scientific importance has been successfully used for several applications (etching, detection, imaging, data-storage devices, ). Currently, the generation of photonic jets is mainly carried out with a free space excitation. However, some works use surface plasmon polaritons to excite a micro-scaled dielectric of different shapes . Photonic jets can also be produced using waveguide structures. We propose to study waveguide ended by a shape with a fast modal method(FMM, PMM and C-Méthode) . Our goal is to find a new shape of the tip that could achieve better focusing performance. We show the advantages of using a multi-rectangular sections tip. Under the same conditions as the single section, a three rectangular sections tip can improve energy concentration and reduce the FWHM at the same time. The second part of our thesis, we propose to study horn antenna loaded by a dielectric and ended by a cylindrical shape. A 3D prototype (Ka band) is produced and used to view a permittivity contrast between two dielectrics.

Single mode approach with versatile surface wave phase correction for the extraordinary optical transmission comprehension of 1D period nano-slits arrays

International audienceA simple semi-analytical model for the comprehension of the extraordinary optical transmission of a 1D array of periodic subwavelength slit is proposed. In this single mode model, the mono layer of the perforated metal film is considered as a homogeneous medium. Therefore, the electromagnetic response of this structure to a plane wave excitation is equivalent to that of a slab with homogeneous equivalent permittivity. A versatile phase correction is added to this model in order to handle the contribution of surface waves in the EOT phenomenon. The proposed model leads to a cavity-like dispersion relation that allows accurate prediction of the resonance frequencies of the 1D structure

The coordinate-transformation-based differential method developed by Chandezon et al. is recognized as one of the simplest and most versatile approaches for modeling surface-relief gratings. In this study, we present a novel numerical solution using Legendre polynomial expansion, enabling us to deal efficiently with faceted gratings. Additionally, we introduce an oblique coordinate transformation to analyze overhanging faceted gratings. Notably, the C-method with polynomial expansion (CPE) demonstrates a dramatic improvement in convergence speed compared to the Fourier Modal Method (FMM)
