Chemical Demolition of Unit Masonry: A Preparatory Study

10th International Conference on Structural Analysis of Historical Constructions: Anamnesis, Diagnosis, Therapy, Controls (SAHC2016), Leuven, Belgium, 13-15 September 2016Chemical demolition of concrete and rock has been conducted on a commercial basis since the 1970s, although not widely adopted. Furthermore, to date there have been no publications on the application of this class of products to unit masonry. To begin to fill this gap, this paper documents a laboratory study on the insertion of a soundless chemical demolition agent into a series of unit masonry wallettes. The paper introduces initial steps towards developing a procedure for the non-percussive demolition of such a wall and observations on the progressive nature of cracking in such arrangements. Although neither the assembled units nor the mortar in these tests were of historic material, the paper provides critical insight into the application of this technology into a building configuration in which it is not usually seen. The results show the promise this technology holds for highly selective material removal, without endangering the surrounding material for historic brick and stone buildings.Science Foundation IrelandCheck for published version. Condition assessment and monitoring in Milan Cathedral: putting risk assessment into practice

    No full text
The cathedral of Milan required continuous care during the long realization works, since 1386, its foundation, to 1964, officially indicated as the end of the construction. The Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo, the body managing the construction and the conservation of the Cathedral in the course of time, developed a series of technical competencies and procedures for this purpose. These good practices are also supported by the Politecnico di Milano. Among the various activities carried out by Politecnico di Milano for sustaining the Veneranda Fabbrica in its mission, the risk analysis related to the rich decorative sculptures became a new point demanding the setting of a proper evaluation methodology. By analyzing different approaches among risk and condition assessment, the authors present a study of a new procedure for detecting risk conditions through a set of indicators. The aim of this procedure is to define an index connected to the frequency of the inspection activities necessary for guaranteeing safety aspects concerning the building and the people attending its spaces

San Giovanni Battista church: Operational modal analysis after injected anchors strengthening

    No full text
The paper reports the results of the efficacy of a strengthening intervention on the Church "San Giovanni Battista" in Sottochiesa (BG-Italy) by tying the entire building through injected anchors equipped with a special fabric sleeve to guarantee effective and controlled grout injections. The Church presented a relevant crack pattern especially on the apse masonry dome. Anchors placed along the perimeter walls through-thickness (27 m) and along the façade and the apsewalls (10-12 m)were pre-stressed and injected. The retrofit measurewas necessary to counteract wall instability, to contain the existing crack pattern, in order to prevent their widening, and to obtain a general improvement of the stability of the archivaulted walls. Preliminary in-situ tests, such as pull-out tests on sample (sacrificial) anchors installed in masonry, were performed before designing the retrofit intervention. The effectiveness of the intervention was evaluated by comparing the results of ambient modal characterization of the building before and after the retrofit works. Since the final aim was to provide new continuity to the walls, reducing and controlling the main vulnerability in the building without significantly altering the behavior of the church, the experimental results have confirmed the efficacy of the intervention, showing unchanged modal shapes and a slight stiffness increase of the entire building. The study gave also the opportunity of testing and evaluating the possibility of making long diamond core drilling works along the perimeter walls in order to tie large buildings through injected anchors equipped with fabric sleeve

The Augustan Bridge at Narni: From laser survey to FEM seismic analysis

    No full text
The Augustan Bridge of Narni represents one of the greatest transit infrastructure realized by the Romans. Mentioned in classical sources, partly collapsed on several occasions, the bridge has kept his strategic military role until the definitive collapse in 1053, being the obligatory transit from Rome to the North. Although subject to many studies however many technical aspects of the structure are still not fully understood: from which quarry the travertine blocks came from, the original number of arches, the absence of breakwater, the shape of the collapsed arches, its slope and physical connection to the Via Flaminia at both mountain and valley level, as well as the causes of its collapse. Recently an entire laser survey was carried out, today updated, providing comprehensive measurements for reconstructing the bridge’s original shape and overall size. Finally from FEM models was carried out a series of structural analysis

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Strengthening of masonry vaults through a thin extradoxal layer of fiber reinforced lime mortar

    No full text
A technique to strengthen existing masonry vaults consisting in the application at the extrados of a GFRP mesh reinforced mortar coating is herein presented. The effectiveness of the technique is investigated through non-linearstaticanalysisutilizinga2Dsmearcrackmodel.Solidbrickbarrelvaultswiththreedifferent aspect ratio between the arch rise and the curvature radius are considered (1, 0.75 and 0.6). Two different load patterns are analyzed: vertical and horizontal load, with distributions proportional to the self-weight. The mechanical characteristics of the masonry, the GFRP mesh and the reinforced mortar coating are assessed through experimental tests. The simulations permitted to evaluate the collapse mechanisms of the vaults, governed by the flexural behavior. The great effectiveness of the reinforcement technique was evidenced by comparing both the resistance and the displacement capacity of reinforced and unreinforced vaults
