However, challenges such as climate change, aging palms and negative sentiments in the major markets, threaten the wellbeing of and raise the question on smallholder farmers’ resilience, which remains poorly understood. Using primary data from Indonesia, the largest palm oil producer in the world, we measure and evaluate the resilience of oil palm smallholder farmers using the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach. Our results revealed five classes of smallholders with different levels of resilience: vulnerable, economically and socially constrained, low-skilled, semi-secure and adaptive smallholders. The farmers in the least resilient group are majorly older local farmers, who established oil palm plantations independently. Meanwhile, the most resilient group is dominated by smallholders who participated in the migration program, and in the past, received support from the government to start oil palm plantations. Our study highlights the heterogeneity of smallholders’ livelihood resilience and the need for inclusive and tailored interventions for the various classes of smallholder farmers to establish sustainable communities.Peer reviewe

ABSTRAKSI Muhamad Hendrawan, 2019, NIT : 52155630 N, “Analisis Karakteristik Arus Kurushima Terhadap Pemilihan Lajur Traffic Separation Scheme di Selat Kurushima”, skripsi Program Diploma IV Nautika, Politeknik Ilmu Pelayaran Semarang, Pembimbing I : Capt. ABSTRAC Muhamad Hendrawan, 2019, NIT : 52155630 N, “Analisis Karakteristik Arus Kurushima Terhadap Pemilihan Lajur Traffic Separation Scheme di Selat Kurushima”, Thesis Nautical Study Program, Diploma IV Program, Merchant Marine Polytechnic Semarang, Advisor I : Capt. I Kadek Laju, S.H., M.M, Advisor II : Irma Shinta Dewi, S.S., M.Pd Kurushima Strait is a strait that have an influence in decision making flow direction election of lanes. The cornerstone of the theory were taken in the writing of this thesis is based on the existence of problems that often arise above the ship and frequent accident in that strait. With this basis the author formulates of the problem 1) How the characteristic of kurushima strait current 2) What factors influence decision making in traffic separation scheme line Kurushima strait. This observation was carried out for 12 month and 20 days in the MV. Geopark Venus. In this minithesis the authors also use rules derived from the theory related to topics discussed. Moreover, the authors use basic methods used in this research is qualitative and descriptive methods (A method of observation, so that the statements obtained by the authors can be described in this paper). Based on the observations made by the author during the se project in the MV. Geopark Venus regarding the influence of currents on lane selection on the Kurushima Strait traffic scheme, there were problems namely the arrival time of the ship with the expected direction and speed of the current, the officer was wrong in calculating the direction and current strength based on the speed of the ship, the ship is difficult to control because it does not know the characteristics of the current, when approaching the traffic door does not pay attention to the signal shown by the current station, the unavailability of passage plan for the two lanes, lack of information and warnings obtained, is too focused on movement other ships and do not pay attention to the movement of the ship itself and the state of the current around the ship, and rely too much on electronic navigation equipment on the Kurushima strait of Japan. In this case it was concluded that the lack of information obtained in the Kurushima Strait region and did not follow the track determined by the second officer and lacked in making distance from other ships. The author's advice is to pay more attention to the information provided by Kurushima VTS and make a direction line that passes through Naka Suido and Nishi Suido as prevention if at any time there is a difference in the estimated path to be passe

From Digital Natives to Agile Learners: Rethinking Digital Skills among Generation Z

    No full text
This study explores the digital skills of Generation Z students through a qualitative lens, emphasizing the concept of agile digital skills as a multidimensional and adaptive competence. Drawing on in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with university students, the research investigates how young people understand, apply, and evaluate digital technologies in their academic and personal lives. The findings indicate that while students demonstrate strong operational proficiency with popular applications, they face significant challenges in theoretical knowledge and evaluative competences, particularly in critical assessment of online information. Moreover, social factors such as family background, gender, and prior learning experiences significantly shape the development of digital skills. By situating these findings within the frameworks of the second level digital divide and digital literacy theory, the study highlights the importance of cultivating agility in digital competence that is, the ability to adapt, transfer, and critically apply digital skills across diverse contexts. For higher education, this underscores the urgent need for curricula that integrate technical, conceptual, and evaluative components to promote critical digital citizenship, employability, and lifelong learning. Ultimately, digital literacy must be reframed not as a static skill set but as an evolving capacity for resilience and adaptation in the rapidly changing digital economy. &nbsp

The multitasking framework: the effects of increasing workload on acute psychobiological stress reactivity

    No full text
A variety of techniques exist for eliciting acute psychological stress in the laboratory; however, they vary in terms of their ease of use, reliability to elicit consistent responses and the extent to which they represent the stressors encountered in everyday life. There is, therefore, a need to develop simple laboratory techniques that reliably elicit psychobiological stress reactivity that are representative of the types of stressors encountered in everyday life. The multitasking framework is a performance-based, cognitively demanding stressor, representative of environments where individuals are required to attend and respond to several different stimuli simultaneously with varying levels of workload. Psychological (mood and perceived workload) and physiological (heart rate and blood pressure) stress reactivity was observed in response to a 15-min period of multitasking at different levels of workload intensity in a sample of 20 healthy participants. Multitasking stress elicited increases in heart rate and blood pressure, and increased workload intensity elicited dose–response increases in levels of perceived workload and mood. As individuals rarely attend to single tasks in real life, the multitasking framework provides an alternative technique for modelling acute stress and workload in the laboratory

EVALUASI KEBIJAKAN PENGELOLAAN PARKIR Studi Kasus: Kota Semarang

    No full text
This research aimed to discuss the parking policy in Semarang which has not been managed properly. In general, the condition of parking management in Semarang is still quite bad. This is indicated by the poor parking service provided and the low amount of parking retribution every year. During 2011 - 2012 for example, the revenue realization of parking retribution was only about 1.3 billion rupiah from the target of about 4.8 billion rupiah, or only about 25 percent of the target set. This condition was worsened by parking services that were very uncomfortable and unsatisfactory. This research used a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The author used secondary data which was obtained from PATTIRO Kota Semarang. This study focuses on parking policy in Semarang by describing the condition of parking management which already exists and discussing revenue gap between target and realization from parking retribution. By analizing data, the authors argued that the main problem of parking management in Semarang is the weak implementation of the Regional Regulation on parking retribution. In addition, the parking policy managed by local Government tends to be unsatisfactory, potentially leaky, and the realization is far from the target set. Therefore, in order to solve the parking problems, the local Government must seriously implement the local regulation of parking retribution and rearrange the parking management which already exists

In most models used previously, the dynamic effect on a plate is only accounted by inertia of its plate. Concerning the soil, inertia is neglected in dynamic modeling of pavement structure. As time goes by, the research showed that the calculation of the dynamic response using classical methods provide results that it is too much when compared with the reality so this method need to be revised by adding the inertia factor of the soil. In this research, the author analyzes the dynamic response of a pavement plate on the ground due to the local step triangular dynamic blast load. This research will be analyzed with the assumption is orthotropic plate with the semi rigid boundaries at the Pasternak elastic foundation. Dynamic response of a pavement plate due to the local blast load will be influenced by several factors among others: the effective soil depth of plate, spring stiffness modulus, shear modulus of the Pasternak foundations, soil mass reduction factor and the position of the load. From the analysis can be seen how the influence of these factors against the dynamic response of a pavement plate due to step triangular dynamic blast load. Dynamic response of a pavement plate that will be analyzed include maximum absolute deformation of plate, moment and shear force

Choosing a good and quality forwarder is something that cannot be considered easy. Errors in choosing a forwarding service will hinder the operational processes of a company, especially if the company is an International scale such as PT. XYZ. This study aims to choose the best forwarder services for the company. Criteria set by PT. XYZ in choosing forwarder services, namely Cost, Quality, Delivery, and Responsiveness. In this research forwarders who offer themselves or take part in bidding to work with PT. XYZ has only 4, namely forwarder A, forwarder B, forwarder C, and forwarder D. In this study the author uses the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method to determine which forwarder fits the company's criteria. The most important criteria for PT. XYZ is a Cost with the highest weight of 0.4841, Quality criteria with 0.2310, Delivery criteria with 0.1676 and Responsiveness criteria with 0.1171. then followed by forwarder A with the highest weight of 0.535, then forwarder B with 0.202, forwarder C with 0.145, and forwarder D with 0.119

The politics of urban water visions

    No full text
Full text is available to authenticated members of The University of Auckland only.Research in the past two decades or so has questioned the sustainability of conventional approaches to urban water management. It has been suggested that a clear vision of the future is one of the key elements necessary for socio-physical change to instigate different ways of managing urban water. Somewhat surprisingly there has been little research on how visions are developed, politicised and, importantly, operationalised. Using Water Sensitive City and Urban Political Ecology as conceptual approaches, this thesis examines the way dominant visions of urban water management emerge and are used to justify certain ways of managing urban water. Archival and observational analyses are supported by interviews with key urban water practitioners in the case study city of Denpasar in Bali, Indonesia. It is an interesting case because the city has experienced huge political pressure to manage wastewater in a new way. The thesis is about the interpretation and materialisation of the socio-physical system guided by the vision. The wastewater system that is being constructed acts to separate water services based on race, social class and economic status. A centralised system is associated with wealthier populations and formal systems and institutions. It is considered a permanent solution underpinned by notions of modernity realised through technology. In contrast, a decentralised system is linked to underprivileged people and informal governance structures. This system is perceived as a community managed approach that is a temporary solution using “appropriate technology”. What is interesting is that recent literature suggests that the latter, decentralised approach is necessary to build resilient and more sustainable communities. This is in stark contrast to the discourse and imagined role of the decentralised infrastructure by all policy documents and stakeholders that were interviewed. Indeed, it was not something that the author had considered until engaging with the literature as part of the thesis. Overall, the thesis concludes visions are never neutral and reflect particular worldviews, ideological aspects and political agendas. Visions are used to legitimate certain agendas by particular groups through construction of certain narratives, irrespective of their underpinning principles
