Demetra Vaka-Brown as a representative of American orientalism in literature
This MA thesis is dedicated to the two fictional travel narratives Haremlik - Some Pages from the Life of Turkish Women (1909) and The Unveiled Ladies of Stamboul (1923) and to the person of their author, Demetra Vaka-Brown (1877 - 1946), the Istanbul-born American writer and journalist of Greek origin. Both books describe the radical changes which took place in the traditional Ottoman Turkish society between the beginning of the twentieth century and the end of the First World War, as they are reflected in the everyday lives and attitudes of Turkish women. Based on Edward W. Said's definitions of Orientalism as a Western cultural and political attitude towards the Middle East and on other sources, the author of the MA thesis analyzes Vaka-Brown's authorial and narrative identities and attitudes to conclude that the two works of Demetra Vaka-Brown can be classified mostly as an example of an orientalist discourse, intentionally tinted with the so-called "cryptoethnic" pro-Greek political connotations
Demetra Vaka-Brown jako představitelka amerického orientalismu v literatuře
Tato magisterská diplomová práce je věnována dvěma románovým cestopisným fikcím Haremlik - Some Pages from the Life of Turkish Women (1909) a The Unveiled Ladies of Stamboul (1923) a jejich autorce Demetře Vaka-Brown (1877 - 1946), americké spisovatelce a novinářce řeckého původu narozené v Istanbulu. Obě knihy popisují radikální změny v tradiční osmanskoturecké společnosti mezi počátkem 20. století a koncem první světové války prizmatem změn v životech a postojích tureckých žen. L’orientalisme sans voile : Récits de voyage en Turquie de Marcelle Tinayre et de Demetra Vaka Brown
This article focuses on the travel narratives of Marcelle Tinayre and of Demetra Vaka Brown whilst in Turkey. The study examines the position of these feminist author-journalists during the modernisation of Turkish society and the modern/traditional polarisation which shook Turkey for many years following the emergence of the Young Turks reform movement. The daily lives and customs of Ottoman women are also examined, as well as the readiness of the two writers to show feminine solidarity towards these women, therefore transcending colonial prejudices
A study of political interest, competence, advocacy and awareness among social work students in the state of Georgia, 2014
This study examined to what degree social work students participate politically. This study also seeks to understand students' political interests, competencies, advocacy efforts and awareness, which are factors that contribute to political activism among social work students. Two hundred and eleven (211) participants were selected for the study, utilizing non-probability convenience sampling. The survey participants were composed of social work students enrolled in an accredited social work program in the state of Georgia, whereas the programs are also governed by the Council of Social Work Education. The findings of the study indicated that, of the social work students, a majority disagreed that they were politically interested, competent, participated in political advocacy or aware of political issues that impact social policy
Quasi two-body scaling in inclusive nuclear reactions
The hypothesis of quasi two body scaling (qtbs) in inclusive inelastic scattering by nuclei is studied. By use of qtbs, a wide range of cross section data can be correlated in terms of a universal scaling function G(k\sb{min}) that depends on a scaling variable k\sb{min}. The scaling variable is calculated from the kinematic variables of the scattering reaction. If qtbs applies, the inelastic cross section can be written as a product of the scaling function, a known kinematic factor, and a quasielastic cross section. The quasielastic cross section can be related to experimental elastic cross sections. Then the scaling function is calculated by dividing the inelastic cross section by the two known factors.Scaling for incident electrons and for incident protons is studied, and the extent to which qtbs is valid is compared for each case. A quantitative measure of goodness of scaling is introduced using analytical fits to the scaling function for different scattering cases. Also several tests of the specific assumptions that comprise the qtbs hypothesis are introduced, and applied to the various scattering cases. An integral sum rule is derived to test whether the scaling that is observed is truly a verification of qtbs. The sum rule is well satisfied, indicating that the observed scaling does verify qtbs. Our results show that scaling is relatively good for both incident electrons and protons, but the scaling is somewhat more universal for the electrons. The production of nucleon resonances is shown to be the cause of scaling violation for negative values of the scaling variable. The electron and proton scaling functions differ in their slope on a log plot. This is attributable to a larger probability of initial and final state interactions for protons, leading to an effective scaling function for the protons. The electron scaling function is related to the nucleon momentum distribution in the nucleus. This momentum distribution is found to be universal, except for a slightly smaller slope for Helium.Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 59-03, Section: B, page: 1181.Advisors: Howard Reiss; John White; Robert DeWitt.Ph.D. American University 1998.Englis

Stopping New Yorkers\u27 Stalkers: An Anti-Stalking Law For the Millennium
This essay concerns itself with some of the legislative responses to stalking in New York and examines some of the specific anti-stalking provisions of the Clinic Access and Anti-Stalking Act of 1999, recently signed by New York Governor George Pataki. The author interviews Senator Michael A.L. Balboni, Assemblyman Scott Stringer, and the Assemblyman\u27s former Legislative Director Rob Hack, who were all heavily involved in getting the legislation passed, offering a unique perspective
The relationship between optimism, self-perceptions of competence, and the classroom environment
The study explores the relationship between the classroom environment and the student's optimism and self-perception of competence. The study was guided by the following research questions: (a) To what extent and how are students' optimism and self-perceptions of competence related to the classroom environment? (b) To what extent do students' optimism and self-perceptions of competence decline as students advance through the primary grades? (c) To what extent do students' optimism and self-perceptions of competence differ within the same grade in open classrooms versus traditional classrooms? (d) In traditional classrooms, do students' self-perceptions of competence decline more as they progress through the grades than they do in open classrooms? (e) In open classrooms, do students' self-perceptions of competence decline less through grades than they do in traditional classrooms?Seventy-seven children and eight teachers participated in the study. Approximately half the number of children came from open classrooms, and the remainder came from traditional classrooms. Children were students in the kindergarten, the second, and the fourth grades. The children's perceptions of their own competence were assessed by means of two scales. An additional scale was used to assess children's optimism. Classrooms were classified as either open or traditional, according to an observation scale and a teacher questionnaire.Statistical analyses of the data did not confirm any of the hypotheses. No relationship was found between optimism, self-perceptions of competence, and the classroom environment. Suggestions are made for future research addressing both theoretical and methodological issues.Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-07T12:13:19Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 2
