How can reputation enable more effective and collaborative deliberation? Iandoli, Introne, and Klein describe how ‘argument maps’ can be extended to highlight ideas of collective interest, and report on empirical evaluations in the areas of climate change and biofuels

The role of imagination in Bergman, Klein and Sartre

This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel UniversityThis thesis provides an inter-disciplinary study of selected works by Ingmar Bergman. I explore how key concepts from Melanie Klein and Jean-Paul Sartre apply to the focus on characters in a state of heightened imagination; and the value placed on imagination in the construction of these films. This involves recognition of the way an active response from the viewer is encouraged. Klein, Sartre and Bergman also attend to contextual factors that challenge any notion of subjectivity as sovereign and the power of imagination is frequently placed in a social context. All three figures develop their ideas within specialised fields drawing on the influence of others. Chapter 2 shows how Klein’s ideas relate to the influence of Freud before exploring how her work can be applied to Bergman’s films through the example of Wild Strawberries. Chapter 3 concentrates on Sartre’s early work, The Imaginary and considers how this is significant in relation to some of Sartre’s better-known philosophical ideas developed during and after the Second World War. These ideas will lead to an exploration of The Seventh Seal. Chapters 4, 5, and 6 focus on three films from distinct parts of Bergman’s career: Summer with Monika, The Virgin Spring and Hour of the Wolf. In Chapter 4 this will be preceded by a brief over-view of three more films from the early part of Bergman’s career. These chapters explore how Kleinian and Sartrean ideas can be incorporated in close analysis, and alongside selected critical responses to the films. The analysis integrates key points from Klein and Sartre in a methodology specific to film studies. This will include analysis of cinematic elements such as camera work and lighting, and recognition of narrative structure and character developmen

Reply to discussion of “Permian—Triassic vertebrate footprints from South Africa: Ichnotaxonomy, producers and biostratigraphy through two major faunal crises” by Marchetti, L., Klein, H., Buchwitz, M., Ronchi, A., Smith, R.M.H., DeKlerk, W.J., Sciscio, L., and Groenewald, G.H. (2019)

Our recent comprehensive review of the Permian-Early Triassic tetrapod tracksites from South Africa includes a revision of the ichnotaxonomy and the incorporation of a large quantity of new material. The paper also discusses, in light of the revised ichnotaxonomy and palaeontology of several sites, trackmaker attribution and the biostratigraphy of Permian-Early Triassic tetrapod tracks. Precise information about the fossiliferous localities was provided where possible and when sites were relocated. Three footprint associations were described (FA I-III) and highlight their potential stratigraphic value. The youngest (FA III) was recognized at four different localities and is likely Induan in age. A recent comment by Gastaldo and Neveling (2019) regarded one of these FA III localities, the Bethel tracksite, which received criticism for its unclear geographic placement and its stratigraphic position. Further comments included a discussion of the possible palaeoecological interpretation of this tracksite. In replying to these queries, we provided more precise geographic and stratigraphic information, confirming the occurrence of this tracksite ~15 m above the faunal transition which we consider to be currently coinciding with the Permian-Triassic boundary (PTB). Palaeoecological inferences are herein further clarified

Cancer gene prioritization by integrative analysis of mRNA expression and DNA copy number data: A comparative review

    No full text
A variety of genome-wide profiling techniques are available to investigate complementary aspects of genome structure and function. Integrative analysis of heterogeneous data sources can reveal higher level interactions that cannot be detected based on individual observations. A standard integration task in cancer studies is to identify altered genomic regions that induce changes in the expression of the associated genes based on joint analysis of genome-wide gene expression and copy number profiling measurements. In this review, we highlight common approaches to genomic data integration and provide a transparent benchmarking procedure to quantitatively compare method performances in cancer gene prioritization. Algorithms, data sets and benchmarking results are available at http://intcomp.r-forge.r-project.org. © The Author 2012. Published by Oxford University Press

    M-theory/heterotic Duality: a Kaluza-Klein Perspective

    No full text
We study the duality relationship between M-theory and heterotic string theory at the classical level, emphasising the transformations between the Kaluza-Klein reductions of these two theories on the K3 and T^3 manifolds. Particular attention is devoted to the corresponding structures of sigma-model cosets and the correspondence between the p-brane charge lattices. We also present simple and detailed derivations of the global symmetries and coset structures of the toroidally-compactified heterotic theory in all dimensions
