Linking Weak and Strong Sustainability Indicators: The Case of Global Warming
The aim of this paper is to describe and discuss the weak and strong sustainability approach of assessing climate change and to show reasonable applications, weaknesses, possible improvements and linkages of both approaches. Main features of ?weak? and ?strong? sustainability approaches are characterized. Damage cost studies of global warming representing weak sustainability indicators are discussed. Further, the examples of the ?inverse scenario? approach of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU) and the environmental space concept of the Dutch Advisory Council for Research on Nature and Environment (RMNO) are described and discussed for illustrating advantages and weaknesses of strong sustainability indicators. Finally, the integration of damage cost modules into a broader methodological framework of strong sustainability is recommended. --weak sustainability, strong sustainability, environmental space, invers scenario, external costs, climate change, global wearming, damage costs
Gor'kijBogdanov : Aperçu sur une correspondance non publiée
Jutta Scherrer, Gor'kii - Bogdanov. An appraisal of unpublished correspondence.
The author traces the course of Gor'kii's relationship with Bogdanov as it emerges from his correspondence, to dale unpublished, with the philosopher and political figure during the years 1908-1910, a period marking the first crisis within the Bolshevik fraction - the bitter struggle between its main leaders of the moment, Lenin and Bogdanov. Gor'kii actively adopts a position in favor of the latter: for him Bogdanov's political and cultural vision represents a real and coherent alternative to Lenin's "orthodoxy". This article aims to give no more than a brief account of Bolshevism in the early years of its development : other, more important elements drawn from the collection of documents are analysed in a forthcoming publication.Jutta Scherrer, Gor'kij - Bogdanov.
Scherrer Jutta. The Cloudy Crystal Ball: Does Science Fiction Predict the Future?
The Apollo 11 Moon landing 50 years ago fulfilled one of the dreams of science fiction fans: the first step in humanity’s exploration of the solar system. But the following decades did not turn out exactly as hoped; we still have not colonized the solar system, contacted alien races, or even built a decent jetpack for personal travel. Dr. Scherrer will draw on his experience as a scientist and science fiction writer to examine the extent to which science fiction has predicted the future: when has it hit the mark, and when has it failed miserably? And what accounts for these hits and misses? Dr. Robert Scherrer is Professor and Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Vanderbilt University. His research area is cosmology, encompassing work on dark energy, dark matter, big bang nucleosynthesis, and the large-scale structure of the universe. He is also the author of a quantum mechanics textbook and has published several popular science articles and science fiction short stories. He maintains a blog, Cosmic Yarns, on science and science fiction

doclevel-MT-benchmark-discoMT2019
This release contains data sets for experiments with document-level machine translation. The data sets have been used in previous studies and provided here for replicability and comparison with other systems. The data sets are taken from the English-German news translation task at WMT 2019 and the English-German bitext in the OpenSubtitles collection v2016 from OPUS. All data sets are sentence aligned with corresponding lines being aligned to each other. Document boundaries are marked with empty lines (on both sides of the parallel corpus).
The data set has been used in the following publication:

The n2EDM experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute
International audienceWe present the new spectrometer for the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) search at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), called n2EDM. The setup is at room temperature in vacuum using ultracold neutrons. n2EDM features a large UCN double storage chamber design with neutron transport adapted to the PSI UCN source. The design builds on experience gained from the previous apparatus operated at PSI until 2017. An order of magnitude increase in sensitivity is calculated for the new baseline setup based on scalable results from the previous apparatus, and the UCN source performance achieved in 2016
Development of next generation muon beams at the Paul Scherrer Institute
The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) provides the world's highest intensity muon beam of s at 28MeV/c. The HiMB project aims to improve this rate by two orders of magnitude. Meanwhile, the muCool collaboration is developing a device which converts a standard surface beam of cm-size and MeV-energy into a beam of 1mm-size and 1eV energy spread by achieving a compression of 6-dimensional phase space by 10 orders of magnitude with an efficiency of
Sixty years of life with François Gros
This is meant to be a personal account of my relationship with François Gros who, as the director of the laboratory where I had my first team became a close and fatherly friend. Over 60 years we had permanent interactions, whether close or far away. And I wish to revive here some of our relation at the grassroots, as well as the folklore in and around his laboratory. He was not only an excellent scientist but also a Statesman of Science and beyond. Myself a minor figure in his big endeavors, this aspect of his life I just observed from below but with much empathy. All along he considered our experimental data and ideas realistic while they were rejected as iconoclastic by the many others. Being taken seriously as a researcher, I did not participate in his professional networks because I never fit the necessary profile in terms of scientific consensus. But his friendship was a major and basic element in my scientific and personal life; I hope my report hereafter does justice to his personality and immense merits
