And…Action! Setting the Scene for Accurate Visual CFD Comparisons Using Ray Tracing
No full textIncreased graphical capabilities of contemporary computer hardware make ray tracing possible for a much wider range of applications. In science, and numerical fluid mechanics in particular, visual inspections still play a key role in both understanding flows, predicted by computational fluid dynamics, exhibiting features observable in real-life, such as interfaces or smoke, and when comparing such flows against experimental observations. Usually, little attention is paid to the visualisation itself, unless when the render is used solely for its eye-catching appearance. In this work, we argue that the use of ray tracing software can help make comparisons between computational and experimental fluid dynamics more robust and meaningful, and that, in some cases, it is even a necessity. Several visualisation problems which can be overcome through application of this methodology are discussed, and the use of ray tracing is exemplified for several common test cases in the maritime field. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
No full textThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
STREAM: A method to facilitate efficient data Exchange and Archiving
No full textThe results of physical experiments are complex and valuable. To facilitate efficient exchange and archiving of test results STREAM has been developed. STREAM means Standardized Test Results Exchange and Archiving Method. A formal distinction is made between the description of the information and the data itself. Standardizing the format of the description file for a given type of test-the so-called Testdefinition-instead of the data files themselves, permits the utilization of generic software tools and data formats for documentation, reporting and data storage. The formal breakdown of a test into five phases-the so-called SMARF phases-has several benefits: (i) testing activities are structured, (ii) it simplifies the process of documentation, and (iii) it facilitates a structured data handling process. These complete, consistent, fully-checked and quality-assured files may be easily utilized by personnel who were not directly involved in the conduct of the tests.</p
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
No full textWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Superconducting molybdenum-rhenium electrodes for single-molecule transport studies
No full textWe demonstrate that electronic transport through single molecules or molecular ensembles, commonly based on gold (Au) electrodes, can be extended to superconducting electrodes by combining gold with molybdenum-rhenium (MoRe). This combination induces proximity-effect superconductivity in the gold to temperatures of at least 4.6K and magnetic fields of 6 T, improving on previously reported aluminum based superconducting nanojunctions.
