"Saved!" by Jena Malone: An introspective study of a consumer's fan relationship with a film actress
While consumers have always been fascinated by the works and private lives of celebrities, some consumers experience a significantly more intensive level of admiration for a particular celebrity and, subsequently, become what are commonly known as fans. However, scant attention has been paid to how the relationship between fans and celebrities expresses itself in everyday consumer behavior. Thus, in order to explore celebrity fandom as a holistic lived experience from a fan's insider perspective, the lead author uses subjective personal introspection to provide insights into his private fan relationship with the actress Jena Malone. Drawing on narrative transportation theory, the study finds that a consumer's fan experiences may derive from one's personal engagement with the celebrity's artistic work and public persona. The latter is essentially the consumer's private intertextual reading of what s/he perceives to be relevant and ‘reliable’ media texts, which can result in a feeling of ‘knowing’ the celebrity like a personal friend — or even of ‘love’
Tagging of Biomedical Articles on CiteULike: A Comparison of User, Author and Professional Indexing
This paper examines the context of online indexing from the viewpoint of three different groups: users, authors, and professional indexers. User tags, author keywords and descriptors were collected from academic journal articles, which were both indexed in Pubmed and tagged on CiteULike, and analysed. Descriptive statistics, informetric measures, and thesaural term comparison shows that there are important differences in the use of keywords between the three groups in addition to similarities which can be used to enhance support for search and browse. While tags and author keywords were found that matched descriptors exactly, other terms which did not match but provided important expansion to the indexing lexicon were found. These additional terms could be used to enhance support for searching and browsing in article databases as well as to provide invaluable data for entry vocabulary and emergent terminology for regular updates to indexing systems. Additionally, the study suggests that tags support organisation by association to task, projects and subject while making important connections to traditional systems which classify into subject categories
Dekompozycja przestrzeni szpitalnej w Malone umiera Samuela Becketta: autor w świetle krytyki genetycznej
This article focuses on Samuel Beckett’s use of the asylum in his novel Malone Dies to explore the role of non-textual elements in genetic criticism (the study of a writer’s creative process through the analysis of their compositional manuscripts), as well as the function of the author in genetic analysis. Taking as its starting point Iain Bailey’s challenge to genetic critics to account for the biographical author which underpins the discipline’s study of written traces in authorial manuscripts, the article contends that genetic criticism must be used in tandem with other approaches such as historicism when studying spaces like Beckett’s asylums. Though Beckett took a scholarly approach when integrating such material into earlier work, making research notes which can be regarded as part of the genetic dossier, the asylum in Malone Dies – based on Dublin’s Saint John of God Hospital – leaves no such trail of textual breadcrumbs. Therefore, we must pay particular attention to the historical function of Saint John of God’s in order to understand how the asylum works in composition and reception. In doing so, an author existing beyond the written traces they leave behind can retake their place in a necessarily incomplete empirical field over five decades after Roland Barthes prematurely declared their death.Artykuł omawia sposoby przedstawiania obrazów szpitala psychiatrycznego w powieści Samuela Becketta pt. Malone umiera. Beckett prowadził niemalże naukowe przygotowania do pisania własnych tekstów, a także dokładał starań, by poczynione obserwacje zintegrować z materiałem stanowiącym podstawę własnego dzieła.
The Security Council in the 1990's: Boom and Bust?, by David Malone
In this article, David Malone reviews key cross-cutting issues in Security Council decision-making throughout the 1990s. These include the growing focus on internai conflicts, a related increase in recourse to coercive measures (sanctions, naval blockades, authorization of the use of force) and often difficult partnership with regional organizations in addressing challenges to the peace. He examines humanitarian concerns, human right violations and democratization as an instrument for stabilization of war-torn sociaties as factors driving many Council decisions. The article also addresses institutional issues, including the CounciFs creation of international criminal tribunals, its relationship with the international criminal court (the Statute of which was agreed in Rome in 1998) and the slow-moving debate over Security Council reform. The author argues that Council decisions in the 1990s undermined fundamentally absolute conceptions of State sovereignty, but identifies several major challenges facing the Council (relations between the UN and the USA; Russia's role within the Council; and the UN's poor record at grappling effectively with African conflicts) at the turn of the millenium. Malone, Neal Mercedes. There's Something about Jena Malone: New Insights into How Celebrities Appeal to Consumers
Although the public demand for celebrities has grown so strong these days that they have without any doubt become an essential part of our everyday lives and contemporary market economy, the marketing literature has paid scant attention to them beyond their mere potential as product endorsers. Therefore, this paper explores how celebrities capture our attention and appeal to us personally. In doing so, it seeks to explain in particular how and why consumers become emotionally attached to one celebrity, but remain indifferent to many other equally talented, interesting and attractive ones. Drawing on introspective insights from the author’s own personal fan relationship with the film actress Jena Malone and consumer responses from previous ethnographic studies of celebrity fans, the paper examines what the substance of a celebrity is and how it appeals to the individual consumer. The study finds that the substance of a celebrity consists of four key human brand attributes through which s/he appeals to consumers as a) the performer, b) the real person underneath the performer, c) the tangible manifestation of both through products, and c) the social link to other consumers
Southern Music/American Music
Southern Music/American Music is the first book to investigate the facets of American music from the South and the many popular forms that emerged from it. In this substantially revised and updated edition, Bill C. Malone and David Stricklin bring this classic work into the twenty-first century, including new material on recent phenomena such as the huge success of the soundtrack to O Brother, Where Art Thou? and the renewed popularity of Southern music, as well as important new artists Lucinda Williams, Alejandro Escovedo, and the Dixie Chicks, among others. Extensive bibliographic notes and a new suggested listening guide complete this essential study.
Shows how vital Southerners and their music were to the development of country, blues, jazz, gospel, and rock. -- Appalachian Journal
Their encyclopedic breadth of knowledge about American musical history is matched—even exceeded—by the depth of their appreciation for excellent recordings. This new edition will continue to provide insight into major cultural contributions from America’s South. -- Arkansas Review
Clear, interesting, and perfect in length and style….The study not only provides readers with a trove of information about Southern music but also provides a useful framework for absorbing information. -- Barbara Ching, University of Memphis
Now joined by Stricklin, Malone has thoroughly revised and updated his wide-ranging study first published 25 years ago. -- Choice
A superb short book. Malone has accomplished what few writers have in books about these kinds of music—the presentation of a scholarly exposition of the subject without ever succumbing to ‘hype’ on one hand or to pedantry on the other. -- Choice
No matter how much you think you know about the roots of American popular music, rest assured that Malone and Stricklin have learned more. In tracing the web of musical influences, they also provide illuminating glimpses into our social history. Their extensive list of suggested listenings is especially useful. -- Edward Morris, writer for CMT.com and former country music editor of Billboard
Alternates reams of detailed information with perceptive interpretation, making the book a social history of the U.S. through the lens of Southern music. -- Journal of Appalachian Studies
I am always amazed at the range and depth of Bill Malone’s knowledge about his subject. Southern Music/American Music is worth the price for its bibliographic essay alone. We are all indebted to the University Press of Kentucky for making this important work available again in a new and updated edition. -- Nolan Porterfield, author of Last Cavalier: The Life and Times of John Lomax
An excellent book. . . . For anyone seeking a starting point for studying southern of American popular music they would be hard pressed to find a better text. -- Southern Historianhttps://uknowledge.uky.edu/upk_cultural_history/1012/thumbnail.jp
Social foresights on Covid-19 futures: developing a NLP tool for Strategic Design Research
Future sense-making is the social activity by which people give meaning to their collective experiences in crisis situations such as the outbreak of Covid-19. Enacted in conversations and narratives, sense-making is a largely cognitive activity of framing experienced situations as meaningful. It is a collaborative process of creating shared awareness and strategic understanding about the future out of different individuals' perspectives and varied interests. If and how such social sense-making about the future translates to social communities lies within the interest of this research from a strategic design perspective. The purpose of this research is to analyze social foresights in collective sense-making about corvid-19 futures. The research will be used to inform (new) strategies of innovation and better inform response efforts of organizations. The first stage is to build the theoretical framework that informs the NLP tool for the design research on social foresights. In this paper, we show how to develop a NLP tool for strategic design research through conceptualizing a theoretical model how to analyze social foresights in collectively coping with the corvid-19 outbreak.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Methodologie en Organisatie van Desig
