Implementation of Virtual Reality (VR) simulators in Norwegian maritime pilotage training

    Get PDF
With millions of tons of cargo transported to and from Norwegian ports every year, the maritime waterways in Norway are heavily used. The high consequences of accidents and mishaps require well-trained seafarers and safe operating practices. The normal crews of vessels are supported by the Norwegian Coastal Administration (NCA) pilot service when operating vessels not meeting specific regulations. Simulator training is used as part of the toolset designed to educate, train, and advance the knowledge of maritime pilots in order to improve their operability. The NCA is working on an internal project to distribute Virtual Reality (VR) simulators to selected pilot stations along the coast and train and familiarize maritime pilots with the tool. There has been a lack of research on virtual reality simulators and how they are implemented in maritime organizations. The goal of this research is to see if a VR-simulator can be used as a training tool within the Norwegian Coastal Administration's pilot service. Furthermore, the findings of this study contribute to the understanding of VR-simulators in the field of Maritime Education and Training (MET). The thesis is addressing two research questions: 1. Is the Virtual Reality training useful in the competence development process of Norwegian maritime pilots? 2. How can the Virtual Reality simulators improve training outcomes of today’s maritime pilot education? The data gathered from the systematic literature review corresponds to the findings of the interviews. Considering the similarities with previous study findings from sectors such as healthcare, construction, and education, it is concluded that the results of the interviews can be generalized. For maritime pilots, the simulator offers recurrent scenario-based training and a high level of immersion. Pilots can learn at home, onboard a vessel, at the pilot station, and in group settings thanks to the system's mobility and user-friendliness. In terms of motivation and training effectiveness, the study finds that VR-simulators are effective and beneficial. The technology received positive reviews from the pilots. The simulator can be used to teach both novice and experienced maritime pilots about new operations, larger tonnage, and new operational areas, according to the findings of the research. After the NCA has utilized VR-simulators for some time, additional research may analyze the success of VR-simulators using a training evaluation study and investigate the impact of VR-training in the organization

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

<ARTICLES>The Identity and Positionality of Korean Children in Japan : A Case Study of Minzoku Class in Public Schools in Kyoto City

This paper aims to examine the identity of Korean children in Japanese public schools, focusing on their relationship with other people on the "majority" side (that is the Japanese children and teachers), and the positionality given to the Korean children in the school. I carried out a research on three Japanese public elementary schools in Kyoto city in which special classes called Minzoku class are held for ethnic Korean children. They are learning subjects such as Korean language, history, music, art and so forth, taught by Korean teachers in a separate classroom during the school hours. I focused on the following two questions. Firstly, what kind of positionality has been selected (or ignored) and given to the Korean children attending Minzoku class in diverse situations and contexts by the Japanese children and teachers? Secondly, how have the Korean children been responding in the process of being given a kind of special positionality, sometimes being positioned as "foreigners"? The below is a summary of the main findings. First of all, the Korean children attending Minzoku class have been given a special positionality by the majority side. In other words, they have been positioned as some kinds of special children, not simply as "foreigners" but as non-Japanese, or "not the same as us". Furthermore, the teachers and children on the majority side have been strongly conscious of the nation and nationality of not only the non-Japanese children but also their own, even in situations when nation or nationality is not necessarily needed to be concerned. Secondly, I found that the Korean children have been conscious of their own positionality selected and given by the majority side, which means that they have identified themselves as non-Japanese, though not necessarily as Korean. At the same time, however, sometimes they feel uncomfortable in the situation that their positions, despite having various realities, tend to be converged on nationality terms. Finally, I pointed out that the teacher's role in the class is crucial to mitigate these minority children's uncomfortable feelings

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

This paper examines how faithful to their ideology Korean voters have been in the Korean congressional elections of 2008 and 2012. We used the panel studies surveyed by the East Asia Institute-SBS-JoongAng Daily Election Studies Team. We find that a vast majority of Korean voters were very clear about ideology positions of political parties (or candidates) as well as their positions, and voted for the party or the candidate whose ideology position is closest to theirs. The fraction of voters who voted for the party or the candidate whose ideology position is closest to theirs is 53.6% in 2008 and 55.4% in 2012. The degree of ideology-faithfulness does not significantly differ across genders, education levels, income levels, and religions, but differ across age groups and ideology groups. The more aged and the more conservative is a voter, the higher the degree of ideology-faithfulness he/she has.이 논문은 2010년 정부재원(교육과학기술부)으로 한국연구재단의 지원을 받아 연구되었음 (NRF-2010-330-B00077)

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

<ARTICLES>The Position of Korean Children's Education in Japanese Public Schools : A Case Study of "Minzoku Class"

This article aims to clarify the positon of Korean children's education in Japanese public schools. I focused on Minzoku class, a program initiated in the 1950s, where Korean children can spend some hours a month learning Korean language, history, art, cooking and so forth. In this paper, I search for answers to the following questions. First, how was Minzoku class introduced in Japanese public schools after the end of World War II? Second, what was the position given to Minzoku class in the public school system and how has it changed due to social transformations in Japan? Especially, in this paper, I compare two areas, Osaka and Kyoto, where there are more than 170 Minzoku classes in public schools and where different processes have been experienced since the 1970s. As the result of my research, I came to three conclusions. First, in fact, Minzoku class was introduced in Japanese public schools as part of the process of blocking Korean ethnic education after World War II by the Japanese Government. It was nothing but an 'alibi'. For that reason, Minzoku class was in practice positioned outside the school system during the 1950s and the 1960s. Second, the real turning point in the position of Minzoku class came in the 1970s with changes inside and outside of Japan, including the diffusion of antidiscrimination movements and the increase of foreign newcomers. After the 1970s, Minzoku class began to be positioned inside the school system. In short, school started to play a major role, going beyond the Korean lecturers of Minzoku class. Third, even now, there is a considerable gap between the realities of the Minzoku class/school and the administrative/governmental practices of Minzoku class. For example, administration does not provide enough to cover the labor costs with Korean lecturers who are teaching in Minzoku class. Above all, more reality-based administrative practices are needed and they should be based on historical perception

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
