Globally, countries in the forestry sector face challenges in implementing climate change mitigation measures and developing solutions for growing raw materials needed for the bioeconomy. Promoting the establishment of forest plantations could be a viable solution for sustainable timber cultivation; however, the current legal framework is not sufficiently defined. The aim of this master's thesis is to analyze and synthesize the current legal framework related to plantations and offer solutions for legislative development. The study analyzes the socio-economic environment surrounding plantations and conducts a survey among large landowners. Additionally, it provides an overview of the existing legislation affecting the establishment and management of plantations, as well as a brief overview of the legislation on plantations in neighboring countries and existing research on plantations. Survey results show that landowners have a high interest in cultivating plantations with the main objectives being forestry, carbon sequestration and its trade. The most desired tree species to grow are silver birch, Norway spruce, and larch. Landowners expect a clear and flexible legal framework from the state that distinguishes the management of plantations from regular forestry practices. To create a clearer legal framework, it is recommended to harmonize the Forestry Act with regulations issued by the Minister of the Environment, specifically Regulations No. 76 and 30. In conclusion, a clearer legal framework would provide landowners with the confidence to establish plantations in Estonia and the stable timber supply from plantations would provide investment certainty for the local timber industry for both mechanical and chemical processing

Диахронное изменение параметра EPP в русском языке (на основе анализа текста Суздальской летописи по Лаврентьевскому списку)

    No full text
The classification of present-day Russian according to the Extended Projection Principle (EPP) has been a widely discussed issue in the theory of minimalism. The investigation of Old Russian texts suggests that the realization of the EPP requirement differed in Old Russian and has been subject to parametric variation. In the present study, the author tries to shed light on this change by looking at the relative position of S and V, and the ways the EPP is fulfilled in them

Low Reynolds Number Effects on Jets from Round, Square and Elliptical Orifices

    No full text
An experimental study was undertaken to investigate low Reynolds number effects on mixing characteristics and turbulent transport phenomena in the near and intermediate regions of free orifice jets. The cross-sections examined were round, square and ellipse of aspect ratio 3. For each orifice cross-section, detailed velocity measurements were obtained at the following 4 Reynolds number based on the equivalent diameter and maximum velocity: 2500, 4300, 8500 and 17000. A high resolution particle image velocimetry was used to conduct measurements in the symmetry planes that extend from the exit to 15 equivalent diameters. Preliminary results show that an axis-switching happens at 2.7 equivalent diameters in the case of ellipse nozzle which leads to a higher spread rate compared to square and round ones. Also increase in Reynolds number decreases the jet widths

Observational evidence of energetic particle precipitation NOx (EPP-NOx) interaction with chlorine curbing Antarctic ozone loss

    No full text
This work is distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 License. We investigate the impact of the so-called energetic particle precipitation (EPP) indirect effect on lower stratospheric ozone, ClO, and ClONO2 in the Antarctic springtime. We use observations from the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) and Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on Aura, the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment-Fourier Transform Spectrometer (ACE-FTS) on SCISAT, and the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) on Envisat, covering the period from 2005 to 2017. Using the geomagnetic activity index Ap as a proxy for EPP, we find consistent ozone increases with elevated EPP during years with an easterly phase of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) in both OMI and MLS observations. While these increases are the opposite of what has previously been reported at higher altitudes, the pattern in the MLS O3 follows the typical descent patterns of EPP-NOx . The ozone enhancements are also present in the OMI total O3 column observations. Analogous to the descent patterns found in O3, we also found consistent decreases in springtime MLS ClO following winters with elevated EPP. To verify if this is due to a previously proposed mechanism involving the conversion of ClO to the reservoir species ClONO2 in reaction with NO2, we used ClONO2 observations from ACE-FTS and MIPAS. As ClO and NO2 are both catalysts in ozone destruction, the conversion to ClONO2 would result in an ozone increase. We find a positive correlation between EPP and ClONO2 in the upper stratosphere in the early spring and in the lower stratosphere in late spring, providing the first observational evidence supporting the previously proposed mechanism relating to EPP-NOx modulating Clx-driven ozone loss. Our findings suggest that EPP has played an important role in modulating ozone depletion in the last 15 years. As chlorine loading in the polar stratosphere continues to decrease in the future, this buffering mechanism will become less effective, and catalytic ozone destruction by EPP-NOx will likely become a major contributor to Antarctic ozone loss. © Author(s) 2021Emily M. Reimagining the Educator Preparation Program (EPP) Pedagogy Experience with OERs

    No full text
In an era where critical thinking and innovation are needed in our educational settings, we must equip our future educators with the resources to reimagine teaching and learning in their classrooms. This session will spotlight how a redesign of the pedagogy courses that focuses on promoting and authoring OERs is transforming our Educator Preparation Program (EPP). What started with simply using OERs instead of expensive textbooks in pedagogy courses has quickly morphed to having teaching candidates create more meaningful materials and resources to use in their field placements. The learning targets will include an initial conversation around why and how this course redesign occurred, lessons learned during the process, and how initial qualitative and quantitative feedback from teacher candidates, students, and other stakeholders is supporting this shift in practice. The hope is that our experience in not just using OERs but having teacher candidates author their own OERs will spark and stimulate further conversation around how an EPP pedagogy redesign can be replicated and enhanced in the future. We recognize that future educators are overwhelmed in the first few years in the classroom; therefore, we believe the pedagogy course is an ideal time to introduce and apply new learning around OERs. This will provide educators with a library of current, original, and relevant resources to create engaging learning experiences in their first classroom

Case, the EPP and Syntactic Markedness in the Locative Inversion Construction of English

    No full text
Focusing on locative inversion, this paper explores data which have the same propositional meaning but show differences in non-propositional ways. A particular concern of this study is the correlation between the presence (or absence) of movement and interpretation. We propose that a movement operation can change the information structure of the moved element, advancing these following key points: (i) We have to allow for EPP-wise strong and weak marking of Nominative NPs and argument PPs when Agree applies. (ii) EPP-wise strong and weak marking of the Goal in the course of Agree operation yields different interpretations in the interpretive component. (i ii) In particular, strong Nominative Case-marked NPs which move to Spec of T are interpreted as either old or new information in the interpretive component while the weak ones which stay in their base-generated position are interpreted as new information. (iv) Unlike strong Nominative NPs, strong PPs which move to Spec of T are interpreted as old information in the interpretive component while the weak ones which stay in-situ are interpreted as either old or new information.Partial funding for the work reported was provided by the Grant from the Brain Korea 21 Project in 2004 (the first author) and by the Overseas Visiting Professor Grant from the Korea Research Foundation under No. 2001- 013-A00036 (the second author). Employer Pension Plan Inequality in Canada

    No full text
The purpose of this research paper is to contribute to knowledge regarding employer pension plan (EPP) inequality in Canada. Information on EPP coverage and value is analyzed using the 1999 and 2005 Surveys of Financial Security. The results indicate that women, persons who may live alone, landed immigrants, and language minorities are at a disadvantage in their EPP coverage and accrued value. In addition, age, educational attainment, occupation, industry of employment, union membership, total personal income, province, and size of urban residence figure importantly in EPP coverage. Furthermore, age, educational attainment, industry of employment, total personal income, province and size of urban residence are all important determinants of the termination value of EPPs. To identify inequalities in EPP coverage among the sub-populations, the researchers use multivariate analysis. This allows an identification of inequalities that are not a direct result of differences in age, gender, level of education, location, or position in the labour market. Findings indicate that differences in EPP coverage for women, persons who may live alone, landed immigrants and language minorities are primarily due to differences in these other characteristics. However, the lower EPP value witnessed by these sub-populations cannot be explained by individual or labour market characteristics.Employer Pension Plans, Registered Pension Plans, coverage, value, inequality, seniors, landed immigrants, gender differences, minority language
