Ambivalenta idrottskroppar : En kritisk diskursanalys av hur boxaren Imane Khelif, som kvinna med förhöjda testosteronnivåer, representeras i svensk sportjournalistik

    No full text
This thesis examines the representation of women with elevated testosterone levels in Swedish sports journalism. In recent years, debates about testosterone and gender have become increasingly prominent, especially around who gets to compete in the female category. Results of previous research show that testosterone plays a central role in defining femininity and maintaining cisnormative norms in elite sports. This thesis therefore aims to explore the representation of women with elevated testosterone levels and examine how Swedish sports journalism constructs and reproduces societal norms about sex and gender. The thesis focuses on the case of Imane Khelif during the 2024 Paris Olympics, analysing 28 articles from Swedish tabloids Aftonbladet, Expressen, Svenska Dagbladet and Dagens Nyheter. The analysis uses critical discourse analysis alongside Stuart Hall's representation theory and Judith Butler's gender theory. The findings revealed that the most prevalent discourses in the articles are "Khelif as an object of analysis and debate", "Khelif as a Perpetrator", "Khelif as a woman or a man” and “Khelif as a transgender”. The results further indicated that gender is binary and described based on social and cultural expectations of men and women. Lastly, visual and linguistic representations are central to organising gender in sports. Our study provides insights into how challenging gender stereotypes in sports can promote a more inclusive sports world, adapted to the biological and social diversity that characterises contemporary society

This study is an analysis of the Swedish media framing of female boxers Imane Khelif and Angela Carini during August 2024. The aim is to investigate how Khelif and Carini are framed in the Swedish press and whether aspects such as gender and ethnicity play a significant role in their framing. The study was conducted using qualitative content analysis as a method and theoretical frameworks such as framing theory, gender theory and intersectionality. The study is based on 30 articles from three Swedish newspapers and aims to highlight potential norms and power structures that shape the media framing. The results show that two major themes could be found among all articles, themes such as “others should be allowed to decide what a woman is” and “success is overshadowed by controversy”. These two themes describe the framing of Khelif and Carini. Conclusions that can be drawn are that gender and ethnicity do play a significant role in their portrayal, but to different extents. Carini's portrayal is characterized by gender norms and an almost stereotypical framing. Khelif's portrayal is very much centered around gender and how she is not a typical woman. Khelif's Algerian ethnicity is also mentioned more than Carini's Italian ethnicity, which may be because whiteness is normalized and considered the ideal, which means that it can exist without being mentioned. The study highlights how Swedish media both reinforces and challenges norms through choice of words and different angles. Khelif's framing tends to overshadow her accomplishments, while Carini's portrayal relies on stereotypes and normative gender roles. This demonstrates a tendency that shows that Swedish media diminishes the achievements of female athletes through their framing.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

”Mäns makt över kvinnor” Kvinnor, sport och diskurser: Imane Khelif, OS 2024

This paper aims to discuss what took place during the Summer Olympics of 2024. when a born-and-raised Algerian woman, Imane Khelif, found herself in the midst of a heated debate, led by several powerful actors — a debate on whether or not it was fair that “a man” was allowed to use their force and power against “real” women in sports. Khelif, a boxer, found herself in what can only be described as a gender-controversy after a win against her appointment on the 1st of August, 2024, after inquiries and scrutiny over her “real gender” came to occupy the agenda. This paper aims to discuss how the category of woman, and the norms surrounding it, is a narrow and often excluding category. What discourses can be found within the very gender that is woman? And can we find that there are norms outside of gender norms that makes the category so excluding? What can we learn about the construction of gender from applying a discourse analysis on what said about her gender between the 1st of August to the 14th of August, through posts on the social media platform X, as well as what was said in newspapers during the heat of the debate concerning Khelif’s identity

    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

A literature review for the analysis of viboracoustic properties of periodic inclusions in porous materials

    No full text
The design based on periodic elements is a powerful strategy for the achievement of lightweight sound packages and represents a convenient solution for manufacturing aspects. An interesting research target is the inclusion of vibroacoustic design rules at early stage of products development through the use of porous media with periodic inclusions, which exhibit proper dynamic filtering effects; this offers different applications in transportation (aeronautics, space, automotive, railway), energy and civil engineering sectors, where both weight and space, as well as vibroacoustic integrity and comfort, still remain as critical issues. This work is a literature review which mainly focuses on three aspects concerning periodic inclusions in porous materials: the concept of substitution of a fluid layer for a porous layer, the Transfer Matrix Method and the descriptions of two alternatives to multi-layering

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Computation of wave dispersion characteristics in periodic porous materials modeled as equivalent fluids

    No full text
This paper starts with the presentation of the shift cell technique, which allows the description of the propagation of all existing waves starting from the unit cell through a quadratic eigenvalue problem. Its major advantage is that it allows the implementation of any frequency dependence and damping in the problem: this is a fundamental advantage when computing the dispersion curves of a porous material modeled as an equivalent fluid. The second part of this work concerns the investigation of the link between the dispersion curves and the acoustic properties of the material. Deriving the equivalent acoustic properties of the unit cell from its dispersion characteristics, indeed, could be a very efficient approach for designing the sound packages with a simple a preliminary eigenvalue analysis.
