Aspects of the social geography of the province of Sistan/Baluchestan, Iran
The Kordi (Kurd) tribe now living in Iranian Baluchestan would appear to be an offshoot of the far more numerous Kurdish peoples of the north-western Zagros Mountains of Iran-Iraq. The Kordi were settled in their present location possibly in the l6th Century AD, but much more likely in the l8th Century, originally to act as tax-gatherers on behalf of the Shah-in-Shah. For many years they lived as pastoralists (often nomadic), tax gatherers, guardians of the frontier, and by raiding and plunder. Their habitat, round the Kuh-e-Taftan massif (one of the more fertile areas in the extremely arid and topographically difficult region of Baluchestan) allows some agriculture; and since the 1940's especially, the Kordi people have turned increasingly to a settled way of life based on mixed farming - mostly cultivation, with some animal herding. Miniaturized Metamaterial Filters Compatible with Standard Waveguide Technology
In this paper, we study the behavior of miniaturized high-order waveguide filters, constructed by loading a hollow metallic waveguide with resonant pins, to form a locally-resonant metamaterial. Such composite pin-pipe structure supports a guided-mode with adjustable bandwidth below the resonance frequency of the pins. We show that the position and bandwidth of this sub-wavelength mode are decoupled from the arrangement of resonant inclusions. We experimentally demonstrate the customizability of the bandwidth and the robustness of the passband against geometrical scaling. Our prototypes, which are an order of magnitude smaller and lighter than traditional filters and compatible with standard waveguide ports, may find applications in future satellite systems, for 5G or internet over satellite technologies.LW
The Prevalence of Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Infection and Genotypes in Patients with Hemophilia and Other Blood Coagulopathies in Mashhad, Iran
Background and Aim: Patients with blood coagulopathies treated with multiple transfusions have a high risk to acquire some viral infections such as hepatitis C. This research was aimed to identify hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection prevalence, and the viral genotypes among patients with hemophilia and other inherited coagulopathies in Mashhad, Iran.
Methods: Medical records of 760 patients with inherited coagulopathies including hemophilia were reviewed in Sarvar Clinic of Mashhad. Plasma samples were subjected to detect antibodies against HCV (anti-HCV) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. HCV RNA and genotypes were determined by a real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method.
Results: Totally 128 individuals (16.8%) including patients with hemophilia (n=116) and individuals with other coagulopathies (n=12) were found to be seropositive for anti-HCV. They comprised 122 men and six women with a mean age of 31.6 ± 10.5 years. The PCR results were available for 118 patients, of whom 86 individuals (72.9%) were found to have detectable HCV RNA in their serum. The most frequent genotypes were 1a and 3a (49.1% and 35.8%, respectively). HCV genotypes were not significantly correlated with the patients’ age (p=0.477) as well as with the serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (p=0.655) and aspartate aminotransferase (p=0.332).
Conclusion: The patients with blood coagulation disorders had a greater prevalence of HCV infection in comparison with the general population in our region. The most common subgenotypes of HCV were 1a, and 3a, respectively. These results could assist professionals to choose more efficient approaches for the management of their patients.

Trends in Preserving Scholarly Electronic Journals
Scholarly electronic journals have become the largest and fastest growing
segment of digital collections for most libraries. Many issues and concerns for
managing electronic journals relate to preserving and providing continued
access to them. The preserving of scholarly electronic journals is a complex
issue with various aspects and is largely different from archiving of print-based
scholarly journals. In this paper the author deals with issues concerning
archiving of scholarly electronic journals. The purpose of this paper is to
identify and discuss different issues related to preserving scholarly electronic
journals. The following issues are discussed: differences between print and
digital media, shift in the responsibility of archiving, copyright and intellectual
property rights, cost of archiving, expertise, selection, redundancy,
organizational issues, etc. Technical issues and challenges related to digital
preservation include a lack of practical implementations of preservation
standards and a lack of technical knowledge, in general, of what information is
required to support the digital preservation process within organizations.
Nevertheless, digital preservation has received considerably more prominence
in recent years, gaining the attention of entities such as national libraries,
national archives and other organizations
Values
Stating that the concept of values is elusive is a commonplace. Definitions abound, showing little consensus and offering understandings of values as moral ends, objects of concern or interest, qualities of worth, preferences, rationalizations for action, and more. The American theorist Ralph Barton Perry, author of an early systematic work on the subject (1926), famously defined a value as “any object of any interest.” Most others use narrower definitions than this, severing the relation with interests and counting as values only relatively abstract desiderata like peace, knowledge, or safety (concrete objects like clean water provision being referred to as public goods rather than public values). Background and Aim:
Drug-induced thrombocytopenia (DIT) is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition triggered by certain medications. This report aims to emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and appropriate management of DIT in patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) treated with a polypharmacy regimen.
Case Presentation:
A case study of a 39-year-old woman with MDD who developed bleeding following treatment with “aripiprazole”, “olanzapine”, “lorazepam”, and “sodium valproate” is presented.
Conclusion:
The patient’s condition improved significantly after medication changes and close collaboration between psychiatrists and hematologists. This highlights the need for proper care and correct prescription of medicines for patients with MDD.
Laboratory Highlights & Technical Implications:
This case report demonstrates the need for:
· Enhanced CBC review protocols for patients receiving psychiatric care/treatment who are on polypharmacy;
· Reflex testing algorithms for thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) workups;
· Standardized communication channels between lab and mental health teams.

All-metallic magnetic Purcell enhancement in a thermally stable room-temperature maser
Enhancing the spontaneous and stimulated emission rates of magnetic quantum emitters through the Purcell effect is essential for designing high-performance quantum devices based on high quality factor and small mode volume. At room temperature, structures constructed using high-index dielectric materials have been favored due to their ability to effectively confine electromagnetic fields. However, these dielectric resonators are plagued by an inherent sensitivity to thermal variations, which are unavoidable during the optical excitation or readout of the quantum states. Here, we propose to solve this issue with a dielectric-free, all-metallic toroidal split-ring resonator cluster of subwavelength size (≤ λ m /17), which exhibits a fundamental magnetic mode at approximately 1.45 GHz ( λ m ~ 207 mm) and a remarkably low mode volume ( ). Through experimental investigations, we demonstrate that the proposed resonator exhibits a high Purcell factor (5 × 10 6 ), and observe maser action when paired with a pentacene-based gain medium. We evidence the remarkable stability of the output pulse against thermal variations caused by thousands of consecutive optical excitations, by far surpassing that of masers based on dielectric resonators.LW
Library Consortia in Developing Countries: An Overview
“Library consortia” refers to co-operation, co-ordination and collaboration between, and among, libraries for the purpose of sharing information resources. The purpose of this paper is to review consortia efforts in developing countries. The paper reviews the literature on library consortia in developing countries in general and India in particular. It also outlines the advantages and disadvantages of consortia. The literature review reveals that libraries in developing countries have been working on consortia at national, regional and international level. However, some barriers such as poor technological and communication infrastructure, inadequate finances, culture and context, attitudes toward consortia and multiple efforts are reported to be limitations of consortia activities in developing countries
High coupling efficiency to a low dispersion slow light-supporting photonic crystal waveguide
In this paper, we design a waveguide on photonic crystal slab for propagation of low-dispersion slow light. By shifting the air holes adjacent to the waveguide, we obtain a photonic crystal waveguide with a group index of 25 in 25 nm bandwidth which results in a group index bandwidth product of 0.366. To take the advantages of low dispersion slow light generated in this engineered waveguide, we next focus on low coupling efficiency limitation. A low group index coupler is proposed to increase the transmission of the light to the slow mode in the low dispersion bandwidth. By using the proposed coupler and adjusting the structural parameters, the coupling efficiency to low dispersion slow light is improved 11 dB compared to the transmission without the coupler
