Performance and trading characteristics of exchange traded funds: developed vs emerging markets

    No full text
Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) are one of the most successful financial innovations of the last decades. The main focus of this study is to examine the risk adjusted performance, tracking error and trading characteristics of emerging and developed markets ETF. 43 passively managed equity ETFs have been chosen to cover both markets. The results indicate that the emerging markets are less efficient in terms of index replication and possess higher tracking error compared to the developed market ETF. Conversely, emerging markets provide better risk adjusted performance. Last but not least, it is also found that assets size has positive impacts towards ETFs performance and in contrast, the expense ratio has a negative impact on ETFs performance. To determine the policy matters, investment types and strategy for the two different types of capital market products, this study is quite relevant to the individual investor, institutional investors, policy makers and the regulators

Blinking in patients with clinically probable multiple system atrophy

    No full text
Background: Clinical studies in patients with MSA document facial motor abnormalities, but no studies have objectively assessed blinking abnormalities in this condition. Methods: We enrolled patients diagnosed as having clinically probable MSA, 20 patients of the parkinsonian phenotype (MSA-P) and 10 patients of the cerebellar phenotype (MSA-C) and 20 healthy controls (HCs). Blinking was recorded with a three-dimensional optoelectronic motion system equipped with dedicated software for data analysis. Results: During voluntary blinking, the interphase pause duration between the closing and opening phases lasted longer in MSA-P and in MSA-C patients than in HCs; the opening phase had increased duration and reduced peak velocity in MSA-P. During reflex blinking, the opening blink phase also lasted longer in MSA-P patients than in HCs. During spontaneous blinking, the rate and kinematics of the closing and opening blinking phases were lower in MSA-P and in MSA-C patients than in HCs. Blink reflex recovery was higher in patients than in HCs. No difference was found between MSA-P patients receiving or not receiving dopaminergic medication. Conclusions: Our objective assessment of upper facial movement documents abnormalities of voluntary, spontaneous, and reflex blinking in patients with MSA-P and MSA-C, reflecting cortical-basal ganglia and brainstem dysfunction. © 2014 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society

Pharmacological inhibition of HIF2 protects against bone loss in an experimental model of estrogen deficiency

    No full text
Estrogen deficiency, which is linked to various pathological conditions such as primary ovarian insufficiency and postmenopausal osteoporosis, disrupts the delicate balance between bone formation and resorption. This imbalance leads to bone loss and an increased risk of fractures, primarily due to a significant reduction in trabecular bone mass. Trabecular osteoblasts, the cells responsible for bone formation within the trabecular compartment, originate from skeletal progenitors located in the bone marrow. The microenvironment of the bone marrow contains hypoxic (low oxygen) regions, and the hypoxia-inducible factor-2α (HIF2) plays a crucial role in cellular responses to these low-oxygen conditions. This study demonstrates that the loss of HIF2 in skeletal progenitors and their derivatives during development enhances trabecular bone mass by promoting bone formation. More importantly, PT2399, a small molecule that specifically inhibits HIF2, effectively prevents trabecular bone loss in ovariectomized adult mice, a model for estrogen-deficient bone loss. Both the genetic and pharmacological approaches result in an increase in osteoblast number, which is linked to the expansion of the pool of skeletal progenitor cells. This expansion either by loss or inhibition of HIF2 uncovers a pivotal mechanism for increasing osteoblast numbers and bone formation, resulting in greater trabecular bone mass

Poisoning the Mind: Arsenic Contamination of Drinking Water Wells and Children's Educational Achievement in Rural Bangladesh

    No full text
Bangladesh has experienced the largest mass poisoning of a population in history owing to contamination of groundwater with naturally occurring inorganic arsenic. Prolonged drinking of such water risks development of diseases and therefore has implications for children's cognitive and psychological development. This study examines the effect of arsenic contamination of tubewells, the primary source of drinking water at home, on the learning outcome of school-going children in rural Bangladesh using recent nationally representative data on secondary school children. We unambiguously find a negative and statistically significant correlation between mathematics scores and arsenic-contaminated drinking tubewells at home, net of the child's socio-economic status, parental background and school specific unobserved correlates of learning. Similar correlations are found for an alternative measure of student achievement and subjective well-being (i.e. self-reported measure of life satisfaction), of the student. We conclude by discussing the policy implication of our findings in the context of the current debate over the adverse effect of arsenic poisoning on children.subjective well-being, Madrasa, drinking water pollution, Bangladesh
