Newton-like phasor extremum seeking control with application to cooling data centers

    No full text
We design a Newton-like phasor-based Extremum Seeking Control (ESC) aimed at multi-variable nonlinear control systems. We first augment the derivative estimator underlying the phasor approach to capture the Hessian of the plant index. Then we use these estimates to steer the system along a Newton-like direction. We assess the closed-loop stability of the proposed scheme and demonstrate its effectiveness in a data center cooling scenario.</p

Energy‐efficient operation of indirect adiabatic data center cooling systems via Newton‐like phasor extremum seeking control

This paper considers the problem of optimizing the operation of Indirect Adiabatic Cooling (IAC) systems with application to data centers. Optimal operation is achieved when the required cooling demand is satisfied at the minimum energy cost. For this purpose, we design a supervisory control system, where the higher layer determines the optimal set‐points for the local controllers by employing an Extremum Seeking Control (ESC) scheme. In particular, we consider a Newton‐like phasor ESC, which augments the derivative estimator underlying the phasor approach to capture also the Hessian of the plant index and then it uses these estimates to steer the system along a Newton‐like direction. The effectiveness of the considered approach is tested in simulation by exploiting a Matlab‐based simulation environment including an IAC system and a computer room.</p

Is microfinance the answer?: VISACA interventions in The Gambia

    No full text
The primary goal of this exploratory study was to investigate how microfinance affects the lives of the rural men and women in The Gambia. Additionally, the study also investigated whether the institutional capacity of the Village Savings and Credit Associations (VISACAs) played any role in enhancing or inhibiting the microfinance intervention scheme. Using a mixed- methods approach, the study was conducted using several data collection tools. Questionnaires were completed by five national experts, and eight microfinance Technical Service Providers (TSPs) in the area of microfinance to gain a broad understanding of microfinance in the Gambia. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a random sample of 120 microloan recipients and 50 VISACA employees. The questionnaires and interviews were augmented with existing secondary data, participant observations, and field notes. A combination of descriptive statistics, regression, and chi-square analysis was used to examine the quantitative data. Qualitative data was analyzed by pulling themes and making sense of the themes. The study found that participation in microfinance leads to an increase in individual and household income and savings. The ability to better provide for one’s family also increased. While a number of the recipients accumulated some assets, a considerable number reported that acquiring those assets resulted from their participation in the microfinance program. The results of the regression analysis suggest that there was no significant relationship between changes in income and savings (dependent variables) and the strength of the VISACA. Furthermore, chi-square results indicated no significant relations between women’s empowerment and the strength of the VISACA. The themes that emerged from the qualitative analysis, for the most part complement the statistical findings. The need to strengthen the VISACAs through capacity building emerged as a central issue that needs to be addressed to ensure long-term sustainability.Ph. Starting from a description of the personal experience that prompted her to develop her model the Author presents the cornerstones of her multiple code theory, revised and updated with the most recent findings from cognitive sciences and psychotherapeutic models field. The qualities characterizing the three main levels of the human emotional information processing – sub-symbolic, symbolic non-verbal, symbolic verbal – and the multiple modality specific codes through which is experienced the interaction with the world are described. Within this new theory of mind crucial clinical concepts and processes are defined as the emotion schemas, the typical interactive sequenc- es from which they emerge and their reactivation in the therapeutic communication, the interactive and internal processes that conduct to the persistence of the painful emotion sche- mas or to the continuous modification of those promoting the subject’s wellbeing. Finally, the Author describes the referential process that connects the various levels of emotional information processing in the everyday contexts as well as during psychotherapy, where circularly three typical phases follow one other – activation, symbolization and reorganization/reflection. The Author concludes by highlighting the eminently embodied and relational nature of this process, as well as its risks and paradoxes

Note del terapeuta e misure del processo referenziale.

The Author presents an analysis of a therapist’s notes on the clinical work with a patient by means of Multiple Code Theory computerized linguistic measures. In accordance with literature the results show a strong connection between the linguistic properties of the therapist’s notes and the effectiveness of treatment. Thus, the linguistic analysis of the therapist’s notes not only expands the possibilities of clinical research, but also could be a useful support to understand and predict the evolution of a case and the type of relationship developed by the therapeutic couple. Clinicians that adopt this methodology in their professional practice have a useful tool facilitating supervision and reflection on the case. This tool can be considered as an “analytic third” monitoring and strengthening the referential process that connects therapists to their lived emotional experience and to patients

Reporting some salient passages of four clinical cases the Author provides an iconic and micro-analytical description of the proceeding of the three phases of the referential process – activation, symbolization, reflection – during the analytic session. The final stage of the analysis of Katy, as described by Bromberg, exemplifies the joint and emotional nature of the process creating new meanings in the three phases; the two sensorimotor psychotherapies, described by Ogden, highlight the nature inherently bodily, sensory and motoric of the dissociated emotion schemas that is necessary and useful to activate during the therapy; finally the case of Ann, described by Cornell, provides an example of the indispensability of the activation in the analytic relationship of the bodily, sensory and motoric experiences afflicting the patient to be able to connect them to the symbolic level and thereby to bring about a actual change. At the end are stressed the multiple roles taking the language in each phase of the process referential

Biomass and carbon forage by Atta laevigata (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in eucaliptals in the cerrado

Eucalyptus plantations in Brazil have been growing in recent years, as they are raw materials for products of great global importance, such as cellulose, paper and energy. These plantations are also important for carbon storage, encouraging the market for carbon credits by companies and governments. However, wood production and carbon storage expectations can be compromised by insect pest herbivory, with emphasis on leaf-cutting ants. Many studies have addressed the role of these ants on wood production, but few have linked them to carbon foraging and its relationship to the climatic factors of the Cerrado biome, where most Brazilian eucalyptus is cultivated and the occurrence of Atta laevigata, one of the most economically important species for eucalyptus, predominates. Understanding this relationship is important to know the role of these herbivores in the accumulation of carbon in plants and soil and their contribution to the greenhouse effect. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate how the temperature and relative humidity of the air influence the foraging of carbon biomass by Atta laevigata in eucalyptus in the Cerrado biome. The work was divided into three chapters. The first reviewed the role of leaf-cutting ants at each stage of the carbon cycle in the plant and soil. The second evaluated how the temperature and relative humidity of the air influence the foraging activity of A. laevigata in different seasons of the year in eucalyptus plantations. The third estimated the biomass and carbon foraged by leaf-cutting ants, depending on the temperature and air humidity in eucalyptus trees in the Cerrado. The results allowed to conclude that the foraging activity is predominantly daytime in three seasons, contrary to what is reported, being more intense in temperatures between 15 to 26°C and relative humidity between 66 to 80%. The accumulation of dry biomass and carbon varies throughout the year, with greater value in the summer and less in the spring. The annual amount of carbon foraged by a single active trail from a 72.87 m² Atta laevigata nest was 17 kg of carbon, corresponding to the amount of stored carbon of 6.96 trees per year.

    Collateral and Credit Supply

The author examines the role of collateral in an environment where lenders and borrowers possess identical information and similar beliefs about its future value. Using option-pricing techniques, he shows that a secured loan contract is equivalent to a regular bond and an embedded option to the borrower to default. He finds that the lender will not advance to the borrower a loan that exceeds the market value of the collateral, and that the supply of loans increases with a rise in the market value of the collateral. Increases in the volatility of the value of the collateral, interest rate, and dividend rate of the collateral independently depress the loan supply. The author also derives the cost of a third-party guarantee of a loan and an implied risk premium.Credit and credit aggregates; Economic models
