Als de commons inderdaad de belofte inhouden een tegengif te zijn in de strijd tegen de neoliberale dedemocratisering, dan is het niet alleen noodzakelijk om een helder beeld te hebben van wat het neoliberalisme is en op welke manier het de democratie ondermijnt, maar ook om een expliciet politiek begrip van de commons zelf te hebben. In dit artikel worden de posities van David Harvey en Pierre Dardot en Laval kritisch tegen het licht gehouden. Dit artikel concludeert dat de tekortkomingen van beide posities alleen kunnen worden weggenomen door middel van een radicaaldemocratisch begrip van de commons
Prefiguring Succes – Meaningfully conceptualizing success for social movements
No full textSuccess in social movements has never been extensively addressed in the literature of prefigurative theory. In prefigurative politics the means are just as important as the ends. Therefore the prefigurative idea of success, the alignment of means, can be a great addition to the conceptualization of success. Together with successful consequences like discourse change or cultural impact. This thesis weighs the successes against negative consequences of a protest movement like imprisonment, trauma or even death. I will conceptualize success in a meaningful way and create a framework to analyze if a social movement is successful or not. I conclude that the alignment of means is a compelling way of speaking about success but when this goes along with negative consequences for activists, then the protest is not always a success. When the stakes are high some form of positive consequences (ends) need to be a part of the movement to call it successful. The case of the Lebanese uprising in 2019 will be used as a constant example to concretely show what it means to think about success in social movements, it will create clarity in a sometimes dense theoretical work

Get PDFWe are facing a time of profound political instability, environmental crisis and a clear distrust of the democratic system. In this situation, authoritarian positions appear to be gaining ground, promising hope and security in response to the uncertainty and precariousness of the present moment. The left’s traditional strategies have become obsolete, and the alternatives for new ecological transitions seem unconvincing to those who are largely excluded from the system. In this situation, the following special issue proposes local political prefiguration as a democratic repertoire that allows us to act in the present in order to imagine the societies of tomorrow. Specifically, it presents three contributions from which to reflect on past and present political prefigurations, taking into account historical and contemporary forms of organisation and institutionalisation that envisage a new emancipatory order within and beyond the state.Nos encontramos ante un momento de profunda inestabilidad política, crisis medioambiental y una clara desconfianza hacia el sistema democrático que se ha forjado en los últimos años. Ante esta situación, las posiciones autoritarias parecen que están ganando cada vez un mayor peso, prometiendo esperanza y seguridad ante la incertidumbre y precariedad del presente. Las recetas tradicionales de la izquierda han caducado y las alternativas hacia las nuevas transiciones ecológicas parecen no convencer a los grandes excluidos del sistema. Ante esta situación, el siguiente special issue propone la prefiguración política local como un tipo de repertorio democrático que permite actuar en el presente para imaginar sociedades del mañana. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
