Networked Adaptive Interactive Hybrid Systems (NAIHS) for multiplatform engagement capability
Advances in network technologies enable distributed systems, operating in complex physical environments, to coordinate their activities over larger areas within shorter time intervals. Some envisioned application domains for such systems are defence, crisis management, traffic management and public safety. In these systems humans and machines will, in close interaction, be adaptive to a changing environment. Various architecture models are proposed for such Networked Adaptive Interactive Hybrid Systems (NAIHS) from different research areas like (networked) sensor fusion, command and control, artificial intelligence, robotics and human machine interaction. In this paper an architecture model is proposed that combines the merits for a multiplatform engagement capability application. The NAIHS model focuses on the ‘hybrid mind’ that is layered in several dimensions defining specific functional components and their interaction
Fusion of Radar and EO-sensors for Surveillance
Fusion of radar and EO-sensors is investigated for the purpose of surveillance in littoral waters is. All sensors are considered to be co-located with respect to the distance, typically 1 to 10 km, of the area under surveillance. The sensor suite is a coherent polarimetric radar in combination with a set of camera's sensitive to visible light, near infrared, mid infrared and far infrared. Although co-located, the sensors are dissimilar and not necessarily synchronized. A critical aspect for beneficial fusion in this application is correct association of information from these sensors. Various architectures are considered and it will be argued that a fuse while track algorithm is the most suitable algorithm in this case. Discussed is how such an algorithm is designed and applied. To improve association reliability also non-kinematic features of both sensor types are considered. Investigated in particular is, which features from contacts measured with the polarimetric radar and the EO-sensors are correlated. These features and their correlations are incorporated in the tracking process. Preliminary results are shown
Utility and cost evaluation for shared awareness
When multiple entities, such as ships, are threatened by hostile objects they can benefit from coordinating actions towards these objects. To enable coordination the ships need to share information about these objects to create an identical shared awareness. Unfortunately, optimal identical shared awareness is often not possible due to limited communication capabilities, particularly when the system includes complex sensors that generate vast quantities of data. The goal of this thesis is to optimize awareness under communication constraints and four aspects were addressed to attain this goal
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Designing Networked Adaptive Interactive Hybrid Systems
Advances in network technologies enable distributed systems, operating in complex physical environments, to coordinate their activities over larger areas within shorter time intervals. In these systems humans and intelligent machines will, in close interaction, be able to reach their goals under changing situations. To moderate the design of such systems a model for Networked Adaptive Interactive Hybrid Systems (NAIHS) was proposed. In this paper we analyse the advantages and disadvantages of this model from the perspective of different research areas like sensor networks, sensor fusion, command and control, artificial intelligence, robotics, cognitive science and distributed cognition. From this analysis several revisions to the original NAIHS model are made. Also several possible improvements are proposed. Finally a number of applications of the NAIHS model are presented. The NAIHS model covers a broad range of design issues, has proven its value in the design of distributed systems. It may therefore be concluded that the revised NAIHS model offers a good framework for the design of such system
Real-time common awareness in communication constrained sensor systems
Sensor systems need to be more adaptive to perform well in dynamically changing environments. Common awareness in sensor systems enables distributed agents to perform coordinated actions and reason about other agents. In addition, physical distribution of the agents in the network prevent a single point of failure and provides distributed sensing, but introduces the problem of communication constraints (e.g. bandwidth and latency), especially in complex sensors with large amounts of data. Therefore, the general aim is to develop evaluationmethods that enable each agent to determine the reward of information coming from its own sensors by balancing the value and the cost (determined by the communication constraints). The value of information is determined by the global need for information. These evaluationmethods are adaptive to changing, and possibly multiple and multi-dimensional requests and to changing communication constraints. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
