Mary Jane Kelly is interviewed by Edward Clark Smith on June 5, 1987 as a part of the Western North Carolina Tomorrow Black Oral History Project. Born in 1911 or 1912, Kelly details her schooling which includes attending Stephens-Lee during the depression, A & T College, and earning a master’s degree from Howard University in Washington D. C. She taught high school in Pitt County, North Carolina for eighteen years, in Statesville for four, and then in Buncombe County she taught at Allen Home and Reynolds High School. Kelly discusses church in Asheville, segregation, integration, and three criminal cases against black men in 1925
D'Marquis Allen (Class of 2016) was interviewed by John McMillan on August 30, 2018 in the Clements Department of History Conference Room at Southern Methodist University. Allen talks about his life growing up in Round Rock and the challenges he faced transitioning to life in Dallas. Allen discusses black history at SMU, his two-term presidency of the Association of Black Students, the origins and legacy of #Black@SMU, and the challenges facing minority students at the University today. He also discusses professors and fellow students who impacted his time at SMU, and his thoughts on SMU's path forward in the coming decades. Mr. Allen majored in creative computing and graduated from SMU in 2016

The chapter begins by looking at the emergence of celebrity culture in the early twentieth century, before examining what constitutes 'stardom' or 'celebrity', what role stars and celebrities play for the screen media and entertainment industries, and how audiences engage with them. The chapter then overviews three key approaches to studying celebrity—specifically, the semiotic, ideological, and political economy approaches—before concluding with a case study of Leonardo DiCaprio
