    The wintering party of the 29th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition perfomed its activities at two wintering sites from 1988 to 1989,consisting of 27 members at Syowa Station (69°00′S, 39°35′E)(leader : Okitsugu WATANABE) and 10 members at Asuka Station (71°31.5′S, 24°8.3′E)(leader : Keizo YANAI). Scientific and logistics activities at both wintering stations are reported separately. Wintering activities at Asuka Station have already been reported by K. YANAI (Nankyoku Shiryo, 34,394,1990). The main scientific research programs at Syowa Station were as follows : 1) Development of unmanned geophysical observatory (upper atmosphere physics). 2) Clouds and precipitation observation by means of vertical radar carried out as a part of Antarctic Climate Research Program (ACR)(lower atmosphere physics). 3) Biological investigation of Antarctic terrestrial ecosystem (biological science), part of international Biological Investigations of Terrestrial Antarctic Systems (BITAS). Routine and fundamental geoscience were performed as in preceding years

    This article is a record of lectures on Japanese prime ministers who appeared in the approximately 30 years of the Heisei era. First, Akio Watanabe amongst other prime ministers, mainly discussed Kiichi Miyazawa, comparing him with Hayato Ikeda and Masayoshi Ohira. Next, Noriko Akiyama talked about her observations on the personalities of Ryutaro Hashimoto, Keizo Obuchi, Junichiro Koizumi, Yoshihiko Noda and, Shinzo Abe, based on her interviews with these leaders.     On Watanabe\u27s theta graph diffeomorphism in the 4-sphere

    Watanabe\u27s theta graph diffeomorphism, constructed using Watanabe\u27s clasper surgery construction which turns trivalent graphs in 4-manifolds into parameterized families of diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds, is a diffeomorphism of S4S^4 representing a potentially nontrivial smooth mapping class of S4S^4. The (1,2)-subgroup of the smooth mapping class group of S4S^4 is the subgroup represented by diffeomorphisms which are pseudoisotopic to the identity via a Cerf family with only index 1 and 2 critical points. This author and Hartman showed that this subgroup is either trivial or has order 2 and explicitly identified a diffeomorphism that would represent the nontrivial element if this subgroup is nontrivial. Here we show that the theta graph diffeomorphism is isotopic to this one possibly nontrivial element of the (1,2)-subgroup. To prove this relation we develop a diagrammatic calculus for working in the smooth mapping class group of S4S^4.16 pages, 11 figure
