Playing tag in the dark: diagnosing slowness in library response time
In this article the author explores how the systems department at the Auraria Library (which serves more than thirty thousand primarily commuting students at the University of Colorado-Denver, the Metropolitan State College of Denver, and the Community College of Denver) diagnosed and analyzed slow response time when querying proprietary databases. Issues examined include vendor issues, proxy issues, library network hardware, and bandwidth and network traffic
Working memory capacity: Is there a bilingual advantage?
abstract: Previous studies suggest that bilinguals have certain executive function advantages over monolinguals. However, few studies have examined specific working memory (WM) differences between monolinguals and bilinguals using complex span tasks. In the current study, 52 bilingual and 53 monolingual speakers were administered simple and complex WM span tasks, including a backward digit-span task, standard operation span tasks and a non-verbal symmetry span task. WM performance was a strong predictor of performance on other WM tasks, whereas bilingual status was not. Thus, the present study did not find evidence of a bilingual advantage in WM capacity. This is an Author's Accepted Manuscript of an article published as Ratiu, Ileana, & Azuma, Tamiko (2015). The use of virtual assistants is increasing every day, as a technological tool that is marketed as a necessity to assist in making our modern lives more efficient. These tools are designed to help us with daily tasks such as searching for information, reading emails, writing messages, making calls and scheduling meetings with others. The most popular examples “Siri” or “Alexa” have been created with specific gendered characteristics and behavior as the author points out “virtual assistants are very obviously gendered. Siri and Alexa both have female names”, (Fellows, forthcoming 2022) designed with a personality of submissive and serviceable, as the author mentions “they portray a gender binary dominant-submissive relationship, positioning the user in the dominant position, and they play out subordination as feminine.” (Fellows, forthcoming 2022)Not peer reviewe

A Case of renal artery aneurysm treated by endovascular embolization
A 60-year-old man was admitted to our department with a left renal artery aneurysm that was detected while performing an examination for dermatomyositis. A 3-dimensional image showed a saccular renal aneurysm whose diameter was 6 cm. He required operative intervention. Because of the location (near the renal hilum), selective transcatheter embolization using an interlocking detachable coil was performed for endovascular treatment. The postoperative course was uneventful. This method appears to be a good choice for the treatment of renal artery aneurysm, considering its safety and the likelihood of success
EFFECTS OF BATON EXCHANGE PAIR STRATEGIES ON THE RELAY PERFORMANCE OF COLLEGE STUDENTS IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASS
We examined the effects of baton exchange pair strategies on the college students‘ relay performance in physical education (PE) class. The subject included 72 students in relay PE class. A multiple regression analysis was conducted by setting 2 x 50 m relay time as an dependent variable and the sum of each personal 50-m run time (50RT) for a baton exchange pair (Σ50RT), delta of each 50RT (Δ50RT), and distance between from the start line of baton exchange zone and the receiver’s position to start running (dSL) as independent variables. All independent variables were significant; the coefficient of determination of the multiple regression model was 0.601 (P \u3c 0.05). The Σ50RT as physical resource accounted for 31.6%, Δ50RT for 16.9%, and dSL for 11.6% of the variance of 2 x 50 m run time. Thus, Δ50RT and dSL were considered important in strategy

When Apollo tasted sushi for the first time. Early examples of the reception of Classics in Japanese comics
This paper analyses the first appearance of classical themes in the Japanese manga production. The author offers a general overview of the cultural background in which such works were created and examines how these comics can be read within the local pop-culture. Afterwards, she presents three different mangaka’s approaches to Classics – Osamu Tezuka, Go Nagai and Hideo Azuma – in order to understand the role that the Greco-Roman heritage assumes within this production.
