Does PBL – Project-Based Learning Expert Visit Facilitate the PBL Implementation Process in Undergraduate EFL Classes?
In this era of globalization, which is marked by the usage of the Internet, English as the world’s
first language plays an important role in almost all spheres. It undoubtedly sets up new demands for English
language acquisition (English teaching and learning), and for more professional, 21st
-century related English.
This paper attempts to investigate whether the undergraduate EFL learners, PBL expert and PBL
implemented school visits, before implementing PBL (Project–Based Learning), have a positive effect on
students, and assist the formation of positive attitudes towards this style of learning. The study was conducted
at TISHK International University, Faculty of Education with 22 first-grade students. The data were collected
using pre and post-questionnaires and were analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics. The
research reveals that interaction with a more knowledgeable person (MKP) or being enlightened by competent
and motivated experts stimulates learners’ interest in PBL and facilitates the PBL implementation process.
The study also shows that the visualization of various, authentic and original specimens of PBL’s projects
activates the process of forming positive attitudes towards PBL
Professional Development Needs of Private and Public High Schools EFL Teachers in Erbil-Kurdistan
Due to the importance of professional development in the improvement of teaching and education,
and the importance of English as a language and subject of study in Erbil, this study focused on the needs for
professional development of English teachers. The present study also investigated teachers’ opinions about
their needs for professional development. The study also attempted to explore other issues related to the
professional development of teachers of English in Erbil such as benefits of professional development
programs, state of professional development programs, stages of applying for professional development
programs and problems in professional development programs. 36 English language teachers participated in
a survey. The survey results demonstrated that a great number EFL teachers are aware of the importance of
professional development. However, lack of resources and opportunities are some of the major reasons which
prevent them to participate in professional development activities. The present study attempts to reveal what
EFL teachers think about their professional development and what kind of difficulties they face in pursuing
their goals
An Empirical Analysis of Ethical Values and Norms-Variances based on Education and Gender on Justification of Violence
Ethics reflect beliefs about what is right, what is wrong, what is just, what is unjust, what is good, and what is bad in terms of a person’s behavior. Do ethical values differ based on gender? Do the ethical values differ based on education and age? The objective of this paper is to explore variances based on the factors of gender and education on the three ethical variables namely, ‘Justifiable a man beating his wife’, ‘Justifiable Parents beating their children’, and Justifiable violence against others’. The paper uses the primary data collected from the seventh wave of the world values survey especially taking the data (N=1200) of Iraq. Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis test are run to explore the variances based on gender and education respectively. The finding includes that there is significant variation exists between males and females and based on education. Another finding is for all categories of education (lower, middle, and higher), the mean values of the female are higher than the male which means that for females regardless of their education level ‘parents beating children’ is more justifiable than for males. The paper suggests some recommendations based on the findings
Justification of Parental Violence – A Cross country Analysis Evidence from World Values Survey- Variances based on Gender, Age and Education
Every society experiences violence in some way or other. Domestic violence is one of the most common and neglected violence. Research proves that domestic violence has significant short- and long-term impacts on children’s physical, emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and social developmental processes. Some international studies have shown that 80-90% of children around the world have been physically punished within the family. In this regard, the researchers aim to explore to what extent parental violence is justified across nations around the world, taking the data from the seventh wave of values survey conducted from 2017 to 2021 in around 59 countries. The research also aims to explore the variance based on gender, age, and education as moderators. SPSS version 26 was used to analyze the data. Mean values, Mann – Whitney U Test and Kruskal Wallis test were the tools used to explore the variance based on gender, age and education. Among the 86,820 total respondents from 59 countries, 41,245 were male respondents and 45,575 were female respondents. The major finding includes there is statistically significant variance exists between male and female respondents as well as different age groups and education levels of the respondents. There was an inverse relationship between age group and education level with the justification of violence. The analysis findings demonstrates the importance of education in reducing the justification of parental violence, highlighting the potential for educational programs to change attitudes toward parenting practices. The findings of this study have significant implications for promoting positive parenting practices and reducing violence against children globally. The research has implications for some policy-making through recommendations
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
The Causes of Poor Habits of Literature Reading Among EFL Undergraduates in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region
Literature reading is perceived as one of the most prominent language skills in second and foreign language acquisition. However, it is observed that students, in general, are reluctant towards reading in Iraqi Kurdistan. Poor reading habits have become a culture, and it has been overspread not only among students but also in the society as a whole in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The main objective of this study is to identify the major causes of poor literature reading habits among undergraduates at both private and public universities in the Kurdistan Region and recommend possible solutions to eliminate these habits. The main focus of the study is on the poor reading habits of First-year students who are enrolled in English-taught courses. The study presents a descriptive investigation and data collected through questionnaires and interviews. Three different methods were implemented to solve the problem: (1) book-based PBL (Project-based learning) type poster presentations; (2) discussing books through debating; and (3) holding motivational workshops, as an academic extra-curricular activity, about the significant role of reading in academic achievement. The study found that some of the root causes of poor reading habits are: social media, being taught by teachers who lack motivation and experiencing instability in life in the region. The study revealed that methods applied by the researchers have to some extent raised students’ awareness about the crucial role of reading in broadening their horizons and achieving academic success. Thus they increased students’ willingness to read and reconciled students with books by making them read several books during an academic semester
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
