Wittgenstein Reading
Wittgenstein's thought is reflected in his reading and reception of other authors. "Wittgenstein Reading" approaches the moment of literature as a vehicle of self-reflection for Wittgenstein. What sounds, on the surface, like criticism (e.g. of Shakespeare) can equally be understood as a simple registration of Wittgenstein's own reaction, hence a piece of self-diagnosis or self-analysis.
The book brings a representative sample of authors, from Shakespeare, Goethe, or Dostoyevsky to some that have received far less attention in Wittgenstein scholarship like Kleist, Lessing, Lewis Carroll, or Wilhelm Busch and Johann Nepomuk Nestroy. Furthermore, the volume offers means for the cultural contextualization of Wittgenstein's thoughts.
Unique to this book is its internal design. The editors' Introduction sets the scene with regards to both biography and theory, while each of the subsequent chapters takes a quotation from Wittgenstein on a particular author as its point of departure for developing a more specific theme relating to the writer in question. This format serves to avoid the well-trodden paths of discussions on the relationship between philosophy and literature, allowing for unconventional observations to be made. Furthermore, the volume offers means for the cultural contextualization of Wittgenstein's thoughts
A Grammar of Bru
This is a descriptive grammar of Bru, an Austroasiatic language spoken in the uplands of Nakai District, Khammouane Province, Laos. It is based on primary data obtained from original fieldwork conducted by the author in the villages of Serk and Makfùang in the remote upstream sections of the Nam Noi and Nam Theun rivers. This thesis also includes approximately 50 pages’ worth of texts gathered from transcriptions of Bru monologues and conversations, and a word list of approximately 2000 entries
Bachelier and his times: A conversation with Bernard Bru
Louis Bachelier defended his thesis "Theory of Speculation" in 1900. He used Brownian motion as a model for stock exchange performance. This conversation with Bernard Bru illustrates the scientific climate of his times and the conditions under which Bachelier made his discoveries. It indicates that Bachelier was indeed the right person at the right time. He was involved with the Paris stock exchange, was self-taught but also took courses in probability and on the theory of heat. Not being a part of the "scientific establishment," he had the opportunity to develop an area that was not of interest to the mathematicians of the period. He was the first to apply the trajectories of Brownian motion, and his theories prefigure modern mathematical finance. What follows is an edited and expanded version of the original conversation with Bernard Bru. Bernard Bru is the author, most recently, of Borel, LÊvy, Neyman, Pearson et les autres. He is a professor at the University of Paris V where he teaches mathematics and statistics. With Marc Barbut and Ernest Coumet, he founded the seminars on the history of Probability at the EHESS (êcole des Hautes êtudes en Sciences Sociales), which bring together researchers in mathematics, philosophy and the humanities.Louis Bachelier
Development of an innovative process for the up-cycling of concrete waste
This study investigates the efficiency of electrodynamic fragmentation (EDF) technology for the up-cycling of concrete waste. Tests were performed at a continuous production scale at various operating conditions and showed that high liberation and recovery rates of aggregates were obtained after just one treatment step performed at 1 kWh/t. These results confirmed then the potential of EDF for the selective recovery of the natural aggregates contained in concrete waste
Beyond containment: corporeality in Mercè Rodoreda's literature
This thesis examines constructions of corporeality in three novels by the Catalan author Mercè Rodoreda: El carrer de les Camèlies (1966), Mirall trencat (1974) and La mort i la primavera (1986), and the short stories: ‘Aquella paret, aquella mimosa’, ‘Una fulla de gerani blanc’ and ‘La meva Cristina’. The study is concerned with locating the author’s formulations of the body in relation to the Catalan socio-historical context and argues that by rendering corporeal representation problematic Rodoreda enters into dialogue with Catalonia’s own historical past, often challenging culturally specific social, sexual, political and aesthetic precepts. The thesis primarily draws on visual and spectatorship theory, urban and spatial studies and feminist analyses in order to explore the idea of the politically, culturally and gender coded body as limit or border. It covers four main areas of analysis: the idea of the body as surface, image and texture and the practices of viewing that objectify the body; the relationship between the body and domestic and urban space; the culturally and politically constructed body as limit; and the concept of the abject or open body which in Rodoreda’s literature is often the consequence of either social, visual or physical violence
International audienceTwo questions come to mind as one considers the formal and aesthetic disparity of the tales classified under the category Jokes and Anecdotes in the Aarne-Thompson tale-type index : Is there a relation between folktales and anecdotes ? ; is it legitimate to have a category that groups them together ? Based on the research by M.-Louise Tenèze who exposes the different types of narrative organisation in folktales, and based on the French versions of frequently mentioned facetious tales, the author examines the form and function of these narratives.
Improvement of the selective comminution of a low-grade schist ore containing cassiterite using a high voltage pulse technology
International audienceElectric pulse fragmentation (EPF) is an innovative technology that uses high-voltage pulsed power (HVPP) for the selective comminution of the treated material. Highly energetic electrical pulses are used to fracture rocks at mineral grain boundaries, resulting in extensive micro-cracks and/or complete fragmentation of the processed particles depending on the applied energy. In this study, the EPF technology was applied to a low-grade schist ore containing cassiterite, in order to investigate its influence on the selectivity of the fragmentation. The impact of EPF on subsequent comminution steps was studied by combining either the EPF technology or jaw crushing (used here as conventional crushing) with subsequent impact crushing. The results confirmed the potential of the EPF treatment for a selective fragmentation of the schist ore. This gave the potential advantages of reducing the total energy consumption in the comminution circuit and of improving the recovery of cassiterite during concentration processes
Brucine suppresses ethanol intake and preference in alcohol-preferring Fawn-Hooded rats
Aim: Brucine (BRU) extracted from the seeds of Strychnos nux-vomica L is glycine receptor antagonist. We hypothesize that BRU may modify alcohol consumption by acting at glycine receptors, and evaluated the pharmacodynamic profiles and adverse effects of BRU in rat models of alcohol abuse. Methods: Alcohol-preferring Fawn-Hooded (FH/Wjd) rats were administered BRU (10, 20 or 30 mg/kg, sc). The effects of BRU on alcohol consumption were examined in ethanol 2-bottle-choice drinking paradigm, ethanol/sucrose operant self-administration paradigm and 5-d ethanol deprivation test. In addition, open field test was used to assess the general locomotor activity of FH/Wjd rats, and conditioned place preference (CPP) was conducted to assess conditioned reinforcing effect. Results: In ethanol 2-bottle-choice drinking paradigm, treatment with BRU for 10 consecutive days dose-dependently decreased the ethanol intake associated with a compensatory increase of water intake, but unchanged the daily total fluid intake and body weight. In ethanol/sucrose operant self-administration paradigms, BRU (30 mg/kg) administered before each testing session significantly decreased the number of lever presses for ethanol and the ethanol intake, without affecting the number of sucrose (10%) responses, total sucrose intake, and the number of lever presses for water. Acute treatment with BRU (30 mg/kg) completely suppressed the deprivation-induced elevation of ethanol consumption. Treatment with BRU (10, 20, and 30 mg/kg) did not alter locomotion of FH/Wjd rats, nor did it produce place preference or aversion. Conclusion: BRU selectively decreases ethanol consumption with minimal adverse effects. Therefore, BRU may represent a new pharmacotherapy for alcoholism.http://gateway.webofknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcApp=PARTNER_APP&SrcAuth=LinksAMR&KeyUT=WOS:000338910500001&DestLinkType=FullRecord&DestApp=ALL_WOS&UsrCustomerID=8e1609b174ce4e31116a60747a720701Chemistry, MultidisciplinaryPharmacology & PharmacySCI(E)中国科技核心期刊(ISTIC)中国科学引文数据库(CSCD)[email protected]; [email protected]
Patient and public involvement to support liver disease research
Patient and public involvement (PPI) has become increasingly important to ensure the needs of patients are fully considered when they participate in clinical trials. Most funders now require a plan for PPI in grant applications. When fully embraced and correctly implemented, PPI adds an important dimension to clinical trials, and its continuing development is critical if we are to maintain the public's support for clinical research. The development of a PPI panel for the National Institute for Health Research Birmingham Liver Biomedical Research Unit (NIHR BRU) has helped to: promote research locally and nationally; improve recruitment to and participation in trials; promote public engagement and education activities; and improve the quality and relevance of consent forms and information sheets for participants. The NIHR BRU has the support of a PPI panel which constantly champions the research being undertaken to the wider community. This paper describes how the panel was established and why it is so effective.</p
