Eternal Memory: Monuments and Memorials of the Holodomor

In Eternal Memory: Monuments and Memorials of the Holodomor, Wiktoria Kudela-Świątek provides an in-depth examination of “places of memory” associated with the Great Famine of 1932–33 in Ukraine, supplemented by photographs from across the globe that highlight both the uniqueness of individual monuments and their commonalities. The author investigates the history, aesthetics, and symbolism of a wide array of commemorative spaces, including museums, commemorative plaques, and sites directly linked with the victims of the Holodomor (previously unmarked mass graves, for example). The book not only illuminates the range of meanings that communities of memory have invested in these sites but sheds light on the processes by which commemorative practices have evolved and been shared between Ukraine and the diaspora.   Drawing upon the concept of “places of memory,” Wiktoria Kudela-Świątek has examined the memorialization of the Holodomor through study of monuments. Denied by the Soviet authorities for over fifty years, the Holodomor long could only be commemorated by the Ukrainian diaspora. Kudela-Świątek weaves the forms of commemoration and the interrelation of scores of monuments in Ukraine and abroad into a comprehensive study of Holodomor commemoration. Frank E. Sysyn, University of Alberta, Canada   This is an interesting book on an important subject. In her study, Wiktoria Kudela-Świątek surveys the many monuments and memorials of the Holodomor in Ukraine and abroad, providing essential background details about their emergence over decades and across continents. Richly illustrated, this book is a welcome addition to the scholarly literature on the Holodomor. Serge Cipko, University of Alberta, Canada &nbsp

The author uses Richard Schechner’s performance theory, Michel Foucault’s remarks from Discipline and Punish and Rene Girard’s category of "scapegoat" as a theoretical frame for four case studies. The analysis of two real (Danuta "Inka" Siedzikówna, Olga Hepnarova) and two fictional (Wiktoria "Ruda" Rudnicka from Days of Honour, Antonina Dziwisz from Interrogation) characters centers on the paper’s leitmotiv: trial as a spectacle (with particular emphasis on show trials). Historical context is provided by the characteristics of mechanisms of power specific for the Stalinist era in Poland and for Czechoslovakia between 1973 and 1975. Using selected texts of culture - television play, tv series, movie, novel and biography - the author presents similarities and differences in the characters’ attitude and analyses based on fear and violence relations between the individual and the authority, the individual and the society. She also invokes the rhetoric of guilt and punishment, discusses the strategies of propaganda and methods of repression. Finally, she emphasizes the meaning of particular performative acts as gestures of resistance and ways of preserving identity

Nutrition and supplementation in football - practical guidelines based on current literature review WIKTORIA STAŚKIEWICZ1 ¹Department of Food Technology and Quality Evaluation, Faculty of Health Sciences in Bytom, Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, POLAND ORCID - 0000-0003-2420-5935 [email protected] Abstract: It is said that football matches are the second most important thing in the world. Football is currently one of the most popular sports and brings record numbers of people together in stadiums and in front of TV sets. For many years, players were allowed to consume the products they preferred at the times they subjectively deemed appropriate. However, today's soccer has evolved due to self-improvement and players following elite athletes. This change in approach to the sport has coincided with an increase in the pace and intensity of top soccer games over the past two decades. In addition, the commercialization of the sport has resulted in increasing demands and continually increasing the level of sportsmanship. Nutrition is an important part of the sports training program. International guidelines, based on scientific research, recommend amounts, types and timing of food intake to ensure excellent training while reducing injuries and trauma. In order to achieve metabolic optimization, there must be a balance between nutrition, training, and recovery. Energy should be provided from optimal sources, and maintaining an adequate energy balance is critical for those who engage in physical activity, especially professional athletes. Supplements and foodstuffs for special nutritional purposes are widely used, so knowledge of the indications for their use, as well as the risks posed by inappropriate use, is essential. Key Words: football, supplementation, athletes, nutritio

Znikający powojenny modernizm — czy prawo powinno szerzej chronić dobra kultury?

    No full text
The disappearance of late modernism — shall the scope of the law’s protection of monuments be broader? The aim of the article is to analyze the problem of demolishing valuable objects of modernist architecture. It raises a question of the scope of protection needed. The author analyzes the requirements of the legal statutes, which leads to the conclusion that there is indeed a great need for new and effective protection measures, as well as the establishment of appropriate evaluation criteria. The author discusses certain examples of demolished buildings, pointing out the features that made them unique and exceptional. Moreover, the article compares those “never recognized nor acknowledged” monuments with the buildings which has taken their space. Due to the fact, that the demolition of the most of the post-war modernism buildings happened because of the lack of appropriate and effective conservation efforts, the author calls for greater involvement of architectural critics in the process of qualification of monuments and their protection. The disappearance of late modernism — shall the scope of the law’s protection of monuments be broader? The aim of the article is to analyze the problem of demolishing valuable objects of modernist architecture.
