    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Food Habits and Stomach Content Analysis of Skipjack Tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis, Linnaeus 1758) Caught in Mamuju Waters, South Sulawesi, Indonesia

    Skipjack tuna is a fast-swimming pelagic fish that has the ability to migrate between water areas. This study aims to determine the food habits and stomach fullness of skipjack tuna in Makassar Strait, Indonesia. The survey was implemented for 12 months from April 2019 to March 2020. Trolling lines were used for fish sampling. A total number of 252 fish was used for fish sampling. Food habits and stomach fullness of skipjack tuna were observed for data collection. The results showed that the food types found in the skipjack tuna stomach consists of fish 24.82-30.72%, (27.8 ± SE 1.31%), crustacean 22.48-30.24% (26.3 ± SE 1.47%), cephalopods 26.37-35.29% (31,7 ± SE 1.61%)  dan unidentified 11.10-19.49% (14.3 ± SE 1.45%). The stomach fullness (SF) varied, which consisted of bursting 9.52-14.92% (11.90 ± SE 1.58%), ¾ filled 14.29-23.81% (22.22 ± SE 1.76%), ½ filled 28.57-33.33% (29.76 ± SE 1.47%) and empty 33.33-47.62% (36.11 ± SE 2.07%). Food types of skipjack tuna were dominated by cephalopods, and stomach fullness was mostly in empty condition

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    The Use of Otolith Biometrics Found in the Stomach of Purple-spotted Bigeye (Priacanthus tayenus Ricardson, 1846) for Food Type Identification of the Makassar Strait, Indonesia

    Identification of the type of food of purple-spotted bigeye (Priacanthus tayenus) is very important to analyze the dynamics of the ecosystem and trophic interaction patterns in tropical waters. The main obstacle in the study of feeding patterns is the difficulty of identifying prey species due to soft tissue degradation in the digestive tract. This study aims to analyze the use of otolith biometric parameters in identifying the type of food of purple-spotted bigeye caught in the waters of the Makassar Strait, Indonesia. The samples used were 45 purple-spotted bigeye collected from the fish landing site. Stomach content analysis was conducted with a focus on otolith type as the primary indicator of prey identification. The results were then compared with a reference collection of otolith atlases to identify the otolith type, fish name, and scientific name. Biometric calculations were then performed on intact and paired otoliths. The identification results for otolith type and shape were analyzed descriptively and narratively. The otolith shape parameters studied included form factor (FF), roundness (RO), circularity (C), rectangularity (R), ellipticity (E), aspect ratio (AR). The results showed that the combination of the six parameters was able to distinguish otoliths from various prey species. The prey families that were successfully identified included Mullidae, Ariidae, Apogonidae, Cynoglossidae, Moringuidae, Plotosidae, Synodontidae, Gobiidae, Ambassidae and Leiognathidae. The roundness and circularity variables were the most sensitive indicators in distinguishing species that had similar otolith morphology. These findings prove that biometric analysis of otoliths is an effective method for identifying the type of food of purple-spotted bigeye so that it can improve the accuracy of trophic ecology studies of demersal predators in the Makassar Strait waters

    The Indo-Pacific Tarpon (Megalops cyprinoides) is a species that has important ecological and economic value in tropical estuarine and coastal ecosystems, but information on its biology in Indonesian waters is still very limited. This study aims to analyze the size distribution, growth patterns, condition factors, and feeding habits of M. cyprinoides from Tanjung Palas, North Kalimantan, Indonesia. This research was a quantitative survey and analyzed using descriptive narrative methods. It was conducted from July to September 2025, with samples obtained from fishermen\u27s catches at the Tanjung Palas fish landing site. The results showed that the total length of the fish ranged from 19.4-48.9 cm (35.12 ± 5.130 cm) with the highest frequency in the 36–38 cm size class (10.75%). The length-weight relationship showed a negative allometric growth pattern (b = 2.6827) with a strong correlation (r = 0.9780), which indicates that weight gain is slower than length gain. Condition factor values ​​ranged from 0.6516- 1.5618 (1.0860 ± 0.1621), reflecting variations in physiological status and the influence of the habitat environment. Stomach content analysis showed that shrimp, decapods, and aquatic insects dominated the main diet, while fish were only a supplementary component. The results of this study provide important information as a scientific basis for analyzing the population dynamics of this species in estuarine waters, and can support sustainable management and conservation efforts

    Intensive exploitation of vermiculated spinefoot in the Makassar Strait suggests a potential shift in population dynamics. This study aims to examine various biological aspects of the species, such as size distribution, growth patterns, condition factors, sex ratio, gonad maturity, and the size at first gonad maturity. Conducted through a survey method in the waters of the Makassar Strait, the research utilized tickle net fishing gear continuously operated in the area. Findings revealed that male fish had an average length distribution of 18.3 ± 0.325 cm, while female fish measured 19.8 ± 0.496 cm. Both genders exhibited negative allometric growth patterns. The condition factor was 0.999 ± 0.004 for males and 1.001 ± 0.005 for females. The sex ratio appeared unbalanced, with gonad maturity stages ranging from immature to spawning. The size at which males first matured gonads was 21.587 cm, while for females, it was 19.229 cm, indicating faster gonad maturation in females.
