    Advances in high efficiency photovoltaic thermal solar collectors

    Two solar energy collection systems commonly used are the flat plate collectors and photovoltaic cells. Normally, these two collection systems are used separately. These two systems can be combined together into one compact unit known as photovoltaic thermal (PVT) collectors or sometimes known as hybrid collectors. These special design solar collectors can simultaneously generate both electricity and thermal energy. There are varieties of terrestrial applications for PVT such as building facade integration, window integration, fence / barrier integration, parking lot integration, and etc. The recent applications and advances on high efficiency and cost-effective PVT collectors will be presented. These include the use of advanced heat transfer features such as jet impingement, bifacial solar cells, extended surfaces, optical enhancement and the use of nano fluids. Finally, the way forward for R&D in PVT technology

    Performance test of solar assisted solid desiccant dryer

    The solar assisted solid desiccant dryer was designed and developed to dry agricultural product. The experiment was carried out to study the performance of the component in the dryer system and drying air condition without load. The system can produce drying air at average temperature 52oC under average solar radiation of 797 W/m2 which is suitable for heat sensitive product to maintain the fresh color, taste and nutrient content. The collector efficiency, heat exchanger effectiveness 1 and 2 was 70%, 77% and 67%, respectively. The thermal, regeneration and dehumidification effectiveness was 48%, 29% and 6%, respectively. The poor performance of desiccant wheel may be improved by increasing the regeneration temperature above 65oC. Some improvements are still required to improve the overall performance of the system such as decrease the regeneration air flow rate, increase electrical heater power and using direct connection from the solar collector to the dryer system

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Pulsating circular air jet impingement heat transfer

    Link to publisher's homepage at http://www.myiem.org.my/The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of pulsating frequencies on the local and average heat transfer characteristics of a heated circular air jet. Pulsation of the air jet was produced by a rotating cylinder valve mechanism at frequencies between 10 to 80 Hz. Flow stru c t u res of the heated steady and pulse single circular axisymmetric air jet velocity are measured using a calibrated hot-wire anemometer and presented in non-dimensionalized form. Reynolds number was set at 16 000, 23 300 and 32 000. The heat flux of the heated air jet impinging on the plate was measured using a heat flux sensor at different radial positions. Results obtained show that the average pulsed jet Nusselt number was higher than the average steady jet Nusselt number for all values of frequencies due to the higher localised heat transfer of the pulsing jet. This was the result of enhanced turbulence intensity due to pulsing the jet. The stagnation point heat transfer of the pulsed jet obtained was lower for the same fre q u e n c y range due to the small turbulent intensity at this position

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
