Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Challenges in cultivating excellent communication skills

Greatest jobs need excellent communicators, individuals who can directly express themselves confidently and clearly, either in verbally or in writing. It's one of the key elements of progress, so it pays to comprehend what's included and there's a whole other world to great correspondence than the self-evident. Almost everyone lays claim to having excellent communication skills, and every job requires them. Having good communication skills in the workplace is all about being able to convey information to people clearly and simply, in a way that means things are understood and get done. It‟s about transmitting and receiving messages clearly, and being able to read the audience. This study is conducting through qualitative research study by doing indepth interview with a prominent celebrity in TV3, Ahmad Fedtri Yahya, a Senior Producer in TV3. He shared a lot of his experience regarding his talent and skills as a communicator. He portrayed himself as a very good communicator, in order to be as a role-model for the society. His talent is not limited to the public speaking icon but also in composing song as lyricist, motivator, activist poetry, and book author. This case study provided some challenges of being celebrity in the communication perspective. In addition, this study further contributes by providing comprehensive overview regarding modes of persuasion (ethos, pathos and logos), which need to recognize in terms of using these three modes in his conversation with the audience

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

The utilisation of online alternative media and its implications towards participatory democracy: a Malaysian case / Azlina Kamaruddin

This study examines the utilisation of online alternative media and its implications towards participatory democracy. Since the enactment of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1999, online alternative media such as Malaysiakini, Malaysia Today, and the Malaysian Insider have played a pivotal role in many political events including the post-Mahathir-Anwar political crisis, the 2008 financial crisis, election campaign, Anwar's sodomy case, and Dr. Hasan Ali's disclosure of PAS weaknesses. Online alternative media assist in spearheading some other relevant issues that reflect the undercurrent of discontentment or otherwise the participation of peoples' voices towards democracy. Dissident voices become aloud without fear to voice out their opinions and dissatisfaction on political issues via online alternative media. Indirectly, it forms a force for a shift of democratic paradigm. Among others this study has explored the role of online alternative media and answered the enquiry of how Malaysians have utilised it for participatory democracy. This study employed the qualitative research method by means of doing semi-structured interviews and qualitative content analysis as data analysis techniques. Within this research approach, examples of the democratic phenomenon were analysed to gain a sense of its general essence. The findings imply that participatory democratic stance via the alternative media is less significant. There were instances where the people voices through online alternative media have gained attention from the policy and decision-makers, and in some other instances it has worked hand in hand with the traditional media

Multi-layer approach for energy efficient opportunistic routing protocol in underwater sensor networks

The Underwater Sensor Networks (USN) are known to be an emerging technology due to numerous applications in aqueous environments. The traditional routing protocols used in terrestrial sensor networks could not be applied for underwater due to the various unique characteristics of USN such as unreliable link, inadequate bandwidth, short life span of battery power, high packet drop rate, and attenuation. Therefore, routing protocols are specifically designed to conform to the characteristics of USN. A multi-layer Opportunistic Routing (OR) approach is an example that offers a promising method to overcome those limitations. Research indicated three critical problems in relation to designing USN: selecting the next reliable energy-efficient forwarding nodes, optimal forwarding path, and communication void. Three protocols were proposed to overcome these problems. First, in dealing with improper high energy consumption and candidate nodes selection problem, an Energy-Efficient Opportunistic Routing (EE-OR) protocol is developed aiming to select the next candidate nodes using depth information and energy metrics. Second, the EE-OR protocol is enhanced aiming to manage the unnecessary forwarding suppression problem using a multi-layer OR approach. The Optimal Path Energy-Efficient Routing (OPEE-OR) protocol is designed to reduce the number of transmissions and control path selection. Third, Energy-Efficient Void Avoidance Opportunistic Routing (EEVA-OR) protocol (a modified version of OPEE-OR) is designed aiming to identify void nodes and avoid these nodes during the process of forwarding data packets. Further, in order to evaluate the performance of the respective developed protocols, several simulations were conducted using AquaSim. Findings were compared to Depth Based Routing (DBR), Energy Efficient Depth Based Routing (EEDBR), Reliable and Energy Efficient Pressure-Based Routing (RE- PBR), Enhanced Void Avoidance Routing (E-VAR), and Void Aware Pressure Routing (VAPR). In addition, findings were also compared in terms of network lifetime, total energy consumption, packet delivery ratio, total number of data packets forwarded, and total number of forwarded void detection packet. Finally, findings also indicated that the EE-OR, OPEE-OR and EEVA-OR protocol performed better regarding network lifetime, total energy consumption (6-24%, 19-32%, 17-32%), packet delivery ratio (3-16.6%, 2-14%, 1.5-13%) and the total number of data packet forwarded (4-18%, 18-31%, 5-28%) respectively. In conclusion, the proposed energy efficient void avoidance opportunistic routing protocol tends to improve energy efficiency and packet delivery ratio; and this leads to the expansion of the corpus of knowledge in the area of underwater sensor networks
