Description: Virginia Taylor and Timothy Kain – recital for Flute and Guitar, including newly commissioned work by Australian composer Robert Davidson. Performed in Brisbane and Wollongong Research Background: This project realised the collaboration of flautist Virginia Taylor and guitarist Timothy Kain, who worked together with Australian composer Robert Davidson. The 3-movement work was performed in 2 Australian cities, Brisbane and Wollongong. The new work adds to the Australian repertoire for this popular duo combination. The project was funded by Virginia Taylor and Timothy Kain. The score and parts are now available as a published work from the Australia Music Centre. https://www.australianmusiccentre.com.au/work/davidson-robert-mountain-track Research Contribution: This contribution to Australian music for flute and guitar is significant. Taylor and Kain have a long history of commissioning Australian composers. This project forms a part of ongoing research to expand repertoire by Australian composers. The live performances were hosted by Wollongong Conservatorium and Guitar Brisbane. Challenges faced were the distances between two cities while working and collaborating with the composer to produce this work, combined with the need to understand how both instruments can integrate, yet be reflected as solo instruments within the ensemble. A close research working and relationship with the composer was integral to its success. Research Significance: A world premiere and published work (AMC) are the outcome of this research. Further performances have taken place in 2020. Taylor and Kain currently have 4 CDs published under labels Tall Poppies, ABC and Move. As Australia’s leading flute and guitar, their work is regularly heard on ABC Classic radio. This new repertoire will become one of the works to be recorded on a CD planned for 2021, which will increase its dissemination. No Full Tex

In this two-part master thesis, we first focus on the theoretical definition of the political musical theatre of composer Kurt Weill and poet and playwright Bertolt Brecht in the social and artistic context of the early twentieth century. We are interested in the new audience that emerged for twentieth-century political theatre and the transformative role of music theatre in a wider social context. We further analyse the duo\u27s famous musical drama The Threepenny Opera and what its protagonists have to tell us about structures of power and violence

Doing Death 'Well': Reframing Neonatal and Perinatal Palliative Care

    No full text
Description Death is a part of life in the NICU, and any clinician associated with labor and delivery and the care of newborns will inevitably experience perinatal death and bereavement. Palliative care principles are difficult to apply to neonatology. The social stigma of denying neonatal death coupled with the paradox of providing palliative care in a curative setting present a compelling practical problem. However, it is possible for palliative care to coexist with curative treatment modes. In this presentation, Dr. Kain explores the philosophy of a “good death,” in an effort to reframe neonatal and perinatal palliative care. Learning Objectives: Discuss the current status of neonatal and perinatal palliative care from a global perspective. Discuss the tenets of neonatal and perinatal palliative care in terms of best practice. Describe the philosophy of facilitating a 'good death' for neonates with life-limiting conditions and the support of families and caregivers. No Full Tex

Neonatal Nursing in Australia and New Zealand: Principles for Practice uniquely reflects the local practice, context and standards of neonatal nursing in Australia and New Zealand. Edited by Victoria Kain and Trudi Mannix, the content spans all neonatal care settings, addressing the considerations of all levels, including special care and intensive care units, while highlighting the collaborative nature of neonatal care and interdisciplinary teamwork within this environment. The text comprehensively addresses ANZ-specific perspectives, including the neonatal context for First Peoples; the neonatal nurse practitioner and advanced practice roles; workplace culture; newborn screening, resuscitation, retrievals and transport; stabilisation of the high-risk newborn; the range of disorders by body system; legal and ethical issues; and end-of-life care in the neonatal unit.No Full Tex

In 2015, there were 446 neonatal deaths in Australia, 215 occurring in the early neonatal period. These data do not include stillbirth and perinatal death, the latter for whom perinatal palliative care would be a valid option. In 2012, a Commonwealth of Australia inquiry into palliative care included neonatal palliative care, bringing this neglected aspect of neonatal care to the forefront for the first time. Up to, and around this time, neonatal palliative care has increasingly been part of the neonatal unit’s vernacular. While Australia has contributed markedly to the growing body of knowledge in this area, there is a clear research agenda ahead to ensure the country meets the same standard for neonatal palliative care as it does with the meticulous medical and nursing care already provided. No Full Tex

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
